cord cutting speeds up as the pay tv mafia scrambles to boost profits

The number of households without a traditional pay-television subscription could soon equal those that have one, a new forecast finds.

The number of Americans who are cutting the cord on their cable, telco and satellite TV services continues to accelerate, according to a new forecast from eMarketer released Tuesday.

The findings come as the tipping point for cord-cutting has arrived as traditional TV providers look to boost profits by offering fewer promotions and Disney, WarnerMedia and Apple get set to join Netflix and Amazon Prime in the streaming arena.

eMarketer reports that by the end of this year the number of pay TV households will fall by 4 percent to 86.5 million and the number of households with a traditional pay TV subscription will fall below 80 million by 2021, with more than one-fifth of households by then having become cord-cutters.

The research firm in its latest survey of the U.S. pay TV market said the number of households without a traditional pay TV subscription is quickly approaching the number of those that have one. The report predicts that, by 2023, the number of pay TV households will stand at 72.7 million, while the number of those without a pay TV package will number 56.1 million.

eMarketer found in its report that the accelerating pace of cord-cutting is caused by TV providers themselves as they put improving profit margins before revenues. "That is coming at the expense of subscribers, who often drop services when prices rise and promotional deals don't get renewed," eMarketer argues in its report.

AT&T during its latest financial quarter saw its entertainment division, which includes satellite TV provider DirecTV, lose 83,000 subscribers as they left the service when introductory price promotion plans lapsed. Rival Charter Communications is also losing subscribers as, rather than cut package prices as cord-cutting grows, promotional plans are ending as higher-margin customers are pursued.

eMarketer forecasting analyst Eric Haggstrom in the report also argues rising programming costs for cable, satellite and telco operators makes it increasingly difficult to to turn a profit while providing pay TV subscriptions.

"Their answer has been to raise prices across the board, and it seems that they are willing to lose customers rather than retain them with unprofitable deals," he wrote in the report

I still pay $220 a month for cable (FIOS)
But currently subscribe to 3 different iptv services.
Only reason why I hang on to cable is because of the delay when watching iptv which is up to an average of 45 secs. All streaming services have delays Yes the legit ones too. The day they eliminate that = im all in on iptv.

Cable is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Their monopoly grip is still too strong and thats because they are also our Internet Providers and as a result still give the best Bundles based on preference. Cable is also still the most convenient option

Once live sports break away from cable giants, that’s when it will all start to crumble. It’s rapidly shifting now.

i pay $100/month for internet

i aint paying for anything else.

i can get ALL the other stuff i want on the internet for free

its not like back in the day when the free stuff would be blurry and in low quality. You can watch everything for free online in HD

so to me there really is no need to have cable.

Since we bought our home I cut the cord.

With two kids who loved the convenience of cable I was a little reluctant but that mortgage and HOA fee alone said fu*k it.

Cancelled Verizon and went with Xfinity.

Best decision ever.

I pay $70 just for the wifi which lucky covers the whole crib from basement and up with no TV package.

The kids got they switch, PS4 and we have fire sticks and one Roku box souped up.

Not a blip in their entertainment pleasures at all.

Love it...

With my 3 iptv services i have every channel in the world including ppv and all sports packages all for a combined price of $27 a month.
But I am a believer that if you have a tv over 70 inches or have a OLED/QLED = you feed it with the best sources. No different than paying for a sports car. I have the best of both worlds. I have a nvidia shield, 4k firestick and regular firestick.
In due time I will slowly get rid of my Premiums on FIOS but again my issue is the delay.

The only reason I have cable is that I only pay $10/month for the best package of Direct TV due to my employee discount. If that ever goes away, I'm cutting the cord.

I can also understand a generation who never saw a tv with nobs on it being perfectly fine with cutting the cord.

the cable cartel monopoly knows its victims will always need internet service one way or another. so it charges what the victim is willing to fork over each month

They won't be able to do it that easily. Streaming still uses a lot of data.

n*ggas have been saying the same thing like you have for years. They don't have as much power as you think. There will always be work arounds and loopholes to exploit.

53.00 for the old "base" directtv now. 65 channels without HBO. 15 for Starz app. 125? A year for Amazon Prime. What's this delay you speak of? Do you miss any of the show or are you saying it starts seconds later?

Seconds later delay (Latency)
Example: Watching a football game via IPTV vs your next-door neighbor watching the same game on traditional TV, loudly celebrating goals and whatever that you have to wait another 45 seconds to see.
