It seems to me alot of people are not realizing what Kawhi’s FA path is.

It seems to me alot of people are not realizing what Kawhi’s FA path is.

Since losing the supermax during the trade to Toronto and him also not being a 10 year veteran yet, the max that teams can offer right now is:

Toronto: 190 million / 5 yrs = 38 million/yr

All the other teams: 141 million / 4 yrs = 35.25 million/yr

He would need another 2 more years of service for him to be eligible for the 10 year veteran contracts called the Designated Veteran Exception which let him sign for 35% of the team salary cap (essentially the Supermax). If he waits one more year after that the team he signs with will acquire his bird rights and be able to offer him the 5th year in those “supermax” deals. So there is no way that he takes more than a 3 year deal with any team. (I wouldnt be surprised if he did a 1 + 1 until he is eligible again.)

His next contract will decide where he will essentially retire because it is nothing more than a stop gap until he gets the really albatross contract that would make up for any lost wages and take him to year 16.

The question it all comes down to is:

Who does he trust will put him in a position to stay healthy, succeed and maximize his abilities in the next 8 years?

Edit: forgot to mention if Kawhi decides to stay in Toronto they have his bird rights and the designated veteran player exception will kick in two seasons, as opposed to waiting three years with another team.

Toronto already showed they can keep him healthy and put a winning team behind him, don't see why he wouldn't stay in Toronto.

going by this sentence alone, Lakers would be it honestly. With lebron and AD there, he wouldnt have to carry that much of a load.... yea they would be playing into june most likely, but the season will be a breeze

i think he should stay in Toronto, but i think his heart is in LA

Toronto because of Alex Mcinney. Dude is known league wide as the best sports trainer there is, and he invented load management. Look how that has paid off.

Toronto will have to keep Masai at all costs then to have the best shot at keeping him.

I forgot to mention in the OP that if Kawhi decides to stay in Toronto that they have his bird rights and the designated veteran player exception will kick in two seasons, as opposed to waiting three years with another team. Will he stay?.. I dont really know. The city, the fans and his teammates have shown major love so if he feels like he can make the most of the rest his career there then yeah he will stay.

But Kawhi will have to stay pat with one team for the next couple of years and then sign that mega contract and trading him after that will be crazy hard with the salaries to match his.

No one has a clue what he's going to do... therefore, what everyone "thinks" is based on nothing.

I've literally heard every talking head suggest that they "think" they know what he's going to do and i've literally heard every single scenario proposed.

I've heard people say Knicks, Nets, Clippers, Lakers, and Toronto. That clearly means that no one knows anything.

Yeah, my personal opinion is that its Toronto or the Lakers.. Def. not going to the Clippers imo but like you said we're talking about Kawhi, nobody truly has a clue where he is going. It's all opinions, nothing more.

Lakers, best weather and surrounded by family and friends back at home and playing with lbj and ad means favorites to win it all and the trainers and medical staff will do the load management to keep all three men with healthy and fresh for the playoffs.

I do not understand why everyone is talking about him leaving. That would be literally the dumbest career move anyone has ever made. They can pay him what he wants and they can obviously win. Where else are you going to get both of those guaranteed?

If kornrows goes I think it's to the clippers. They did alright with the little bit they had last year. He could've got them deep into the playoffs. He dragged Lowry bum a*s to a championship. The real MVP rns

Can’t go to LA, not sure of the logistics to it all, but since they trade AD at this time instead of after the draft..the Lakers will only have like 23 mill for cap size..won’t be able to sign any superstar..might well spread that around and get a bench

So as the deal stands its 23 million in cap space. It could turn to 27 million if AD declines the trade kicker. If he declines and they wait to process the trade until August 1 a month after the Number 4 rookie gets drafted his contract will get included in the trade and bump up the salary cap to 32 million.
