It appears that the Phillies honeymoon phrase with Bryce Harper is officially over. After kicking off his time with the Phillies in which Harper did, said and wore everything to win over the hearts of Philadelphia, fans have begun to grow impatient with his recent struggles at the plate.

Harper had a great diving catch to keep the game tied in the Phillies win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday (PHI 7, MIL 4), but Harper still is frustrating some fans with his nonexistent production at the plate. He struck out three times, and was the only Phillies starting position player without a hit on Monday. Harper's three-strikeout night was his 19th game this season with multiple strikeouts. No other MLB player has more than 16 so far this season.

Here's a look at Harper's numbers through the first quarter of his first of 13 years in his new contract

image This is clearly not the offensive production that the Phillies paid a then-record $330 million for this offseason. Harper looked great through his first five games in a Phillies uniform, slashing .500/.652/1.188 with three home runs, five RBI and just five strikeouts versus seven walks. But the All-Star outfielder has been in an offensive decline since, compiling 39 strikeouts and just 19 hits in the team's previous month of play (April 13-May 13).

As MLB.com's Sarah Langs notes, Harper has had his worst batting average (.222) through 40 games as well as his highest strikeout total (54, tied for most in MLB) through 40 games. To Harper's credit, his 31 walks lead the National League.

Right now, however, Harper's strikeout percentage is up while his contact percentage is down compared to last season. According to Fangraphs, Harper's 2019 season strikeout percentage is at 30.5 percent, compared to 24.3 percent from 2018, and his contact percentage is at 48 percent, compared to 55.4 percent from 2018
This slump is something Harper is prone to do, and he had been a hot-and-cold player pretty much the whole time during his career with the Washington Nationals. Plus, even after Harper's hot start to the season, he's shown fans glimmers of hope when it comes to his bat, like his grand slam on May 7 and his career-high five hit game on April 19. He's bound to break out of this cold stretch soon enough, and the good thing is that the first-place Phillies are still winning thanks to an extremely deep lineup and strong pitching

Donít forget about the wear and tear on your body though...

When itís all said and done heís gonna be closing in on around $400 million total for his career.. no NFL player is making that for his career.

And NBA players may make that or slightly more.. but theyíre doing way more work and risking way more injury.

But the NBA contracts are way more common than these baseball contracts especially the way the MLB is heading though.

Does it matter though? Contracts like this especially in a market like Philly you arenít supposed to have down games.

Another discussion about stats without a single advanced metric featured in the photo in the OP...

It's time baseball fans caught themselves up to speed with the current philosophy of the game and moved beyond batting averages and counting stats. I can tell very little about a hitter's profile after looking at nothing but batting average, runs scored, home runs, RBI and stolen bases. Those are basic, casual stats and nothing more, tantamount to ranking NFL QBs by nothing other than the number of passes they completed every year.

Harper doesn't bring batting average to the table. Hitting for average is not what he was drafted to do. He has an elite eye capable of drawing walks with the best of the MLB, . And both of those stats are before considering Harper's power.

"but but but .222 batting average!"

Yeah. That doesn't fu*king mean anything. In the current era that prioritizes hitters, batting average has never been less important. The stolen base has never been less important. The type of small ball that favors contact hitters and speedsters on the basepath has never been less important. Sabermetrics has done the math on these styles of play and determined that putting a runner on base is a priority that sits well above developing hitters that can hit for high averages, which, no matter how high of a figure we are looking at, will still fail in comparison to the on base percentages of hitters capable of drawing walks at an elite rate.

Mike Trout, for example, is not a special case when we evaluate only his batting average, hitting "just" .307 for his career (still ranking him somewhere in the top 5% of hitters ever, mind you). But when we evaluate his career OBP of .416, we quickly realize he is second only to Joey Votto among active players when it comes to getting on base. Getting on base ~41% of the time, through any means, is simply more valuable in this era than being a .310+ hitter with an inability to draw walks, which is pretty much the absolute extreme ceiling for a player with a profile like a Javy Baez or Jose Altuve.

And yet walks are ignored on boxden entirely, as if unimportant. No, what's relatively unimportant are contact hitters who reach base less than 35-40% of the time, despite hitting safely as much as 30% of the time or more. The guy batting behind these hitters doesn't need them to bat .300 to drive them in at the most effective pace. He needs them to reach base closer to 40% of the time to do that.

Walks matter. Advanced metrics matter.

And Harper's contributions to the Phillies matters a whole lot more than what this lazy criticism of Bryce in this thread would indicate.

Arent MLB contracts fully guaranteed though? I mean sh*t, a team's third best starting pitchers can get 100 mil five years easy.

NFLer gets a 100 mil contract and may only get 10
NBA's nice if you are a star but by far MLB makes the most.

I'll say Hoskins isn't mad at this signing at all, he is batting over 350 with 16rbi's following Harper WALKS so far.

If you seen how Phillies season tickets and merch spiked after his signing, you can understand they aren't worried about this signing that much. Back end will suck but it happened with Ryan Howard for them, is what it is

Kind of like Howard, Harper will probably have down months, and then have ones that he can carry the squad in stretches.

Also the marketing aspect as well. The phillies will make back the money they are spending on this contract from ticket sales and merchandise within the few years of this deal anyways. Same thing with the Pujols signing for the angels.
