MGM Sets Film On ‘Yasuke’, History’s Sole African Samurai

image

MGM will mount Yasuke, an action film that is based on the true story of history’s only recorded African samurai in feudal Japan. Stuart C. Paul has written the script and Whalerock Industries’ Lloyd Braun and Andrew Mittman are producing. The latter has joined the exec ranks at MGM and will steer the project.

A native of Portuguese Mozambique, Yasuke was taken captive and brought to 16th-century Japan as a slave to Jesuit missionaries. The first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, Yasuke’s arrival arouses the interest of Oda Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. The script focuses on the complex relationship between the two men as Yasuke earns Nobunaga’s friendship, respect — and ultimately, the honor, swords and title of samurai.

People try to say that Tom Cruise’s role was whitewashing but I never understood how because his character was SUPPOSED to be white. It’s not like he was playing Yasuke Nagasaki, he was playing an Englishmen.

Its white savior. Not whitewashing this time. The n*gga Matt Damon was just apart of it & got openly clowned for it.White men are just now feeling accountable for alot of blatant bullsh*t

I always hear it used as an example of whitewashing alongside the old movies of white dudes playing Egyptians, Ghandi, etc. There was a post on bx not too long ago of someone lumping Tom Cruise’s role into those white washed roles.

From what I remember of the movie it's told from Tom Cruise's perspective, so maybe people see it as taking away from the Japanese Samurai that they felt should have been more of the focus, but at the same time maybe the writer/director made the movie like this so people would identify more with the foreigner entering this foreign land and coming to discover the hidden beauty of the Japanese culture.

nah whitewashing is taking a character that is another race i.e Ghandi being played by Ben Kinglsey or Emma Stone playing a Hawaiian. Tom Cruise was a white saviour he comes along learns japanese culture and defeats samurai who trained their whole lives in f*ghting with a sword after living with them for 3 months. Green Book was a more recent example. White guy learns about black culture and is suddenly not racist and is defender of black rights etc.

Oh I’m well aware of what white washing is. I was just stating that people often lump Tom Cruise’s role in The Last Samurai in with other white wash films.

That’s the way I interpreted it.

He was arrogant/ ignorant of Japanese culture in the beginning and slowly gained a respect for the culture that he was ultimately ready to die for in the end.

At that time it was extremely hard to get into Japan, they were keen on being isolated from the world as much as possible

Japan was extremely isolated until like the 1800s when commodore matt perry came and basically forced them to open up.
