Eddie Murphy CONFIRMS Coming to America 2

Craig Brewer To Direct Eddie Murphy In ‘Coming To America 2’ For Paramount

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is setting Craig Brewer to direct Coming To America 2, finally bringing to the starting gate the sequel to the 1988 blockbuster comedy. Eddie Murphy is poised to reprise his role as Akeem, the pampered African prince who became bored of potential marriage partners in the kingdom too in awe of him, and who traveled to Queens to go undercover and find a woman with a strong will that he could respect.

Brewer just directed Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name, and the star was eager to work with him again. The female empowerment theme of the original seems timely in today’s climate.

Kenya Barris is rewriting a script by original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Barris is exec producer.

In the sequel, Akeem learns about a long lost son, and must return to America to meet his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. The intention is to bring back the original cast which includes Arsenio Hall, who played the prince’s aide Semmi; Shari Headley, who was courted by the prince when he went undercover as a fast food worker; John Amos, who played her father; and James Earl Jones, who played the king.

There is no start date, but the hope is that production begins in 2019.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement. “We’ve a*sembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

Said Kenya Barris: “Craig’s ability to create a distinct cinematic world with each of his films is not only impressive, but also what made him exactly the voice and vision we needed to bring this story to life. From Hustle and Flow to his work with Eddie onDolemite Is My Name, he never fails to blow me away. He is a true auteur and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”

My Name Is Dolemite is wrapped, with script by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, and Murphy playing the self-made blaxploitation film star alongside Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Chris Rock, Craig Robinson and T.I. The picture will be released by Netflix.

Brewer is repped by WME and attorney Carlos Goodman, and Murphy is WME, ML

Coming To America is my favorite move of all time, with that being said I'm not totally sold on them doing a sequel. To me nothing will ever live up to the first one.

I feel like the 80's is what made this movie what it was, just as far as the whole vibes that people had back then ....but I'm not writing this off either

Thinking about it, the long lost son angle is the only way to really make this story work. If Akeem and Lisa had a son, it would basically just be the same story as the first one with the prince coming to America looking for love. If it was about Semmi son, then it wouldn't work too because he would not be the heir to the throne. And just because we didn't see Akeem have relations with other women on screen doesn't mean they can't add that in. Let's just say one of those thotties in the club caught him at a weak moment and he gave in before meeting Lisa (certainly possible). He ends up conceiving a son with some broke thot and ends up leaving back to Zamunda after getting with Lisa without ever coming into contact with the woman again.

Akeem (who is now serving as King) and Lisa are happily married with two daughters, but he's always dreamed of having a son that he could make an heir to his throne. He gets a tip from someone in the states that he has a bastard son living in "Queens", New York. This son in Queens is a charismatic, broke street hustler (similar to Eddie's character from Trading Places). Let's say his mother has passed away and he has no family basically. Akeem comes to America to confirm he is indeed the father to this man, only to find out that the son he always wanted is a complete buffoon. Akeem takes his son with him back to Zamunda. We watch fu*kery ensue while he vows to make his idiot son a worthy heir, while everybody in the kingdom looks on in embarrassment ....The son will eventually learn, just like how Billy Ray Valentine did in Trading Places; and he'll also find love with some beautiful chick in Zamunda

I don't know why I wrote all that but that's how I'd write a sequel

IDK mannnn I feel you...There's a lot of sh*t they just ain't gonna be able to get away with in this era of Offended...

The stereotypes is what made a lot of the sh*t from the 80's funny...
They aren't gonna be able to get away with that sh*t from a continuity standpoint or in today's climate...He's acclimated to America now what African stereotypes can they pull off that aren't just gonna look forced without crossing the line...

I wish em the best and will most def see it but I'm skeptical as fu*k on them pulling it off...

On another note; I know everyone wants to see "black love" and all that on the big screen but why not just go with him and Lisa Divorced, fu*k it...them sh*ts don't be happily ever after anyway...

Only way the "Akeem's son" reference works is if the mother was one of his bathers from before Lisa.... those are the only women we know he smashed. She would've had to move to America and not told him he had a son. After all, it isn't uncommon for Zamundan citizens to migrate (e.g. the workers at the basketball game).
