Samsung will put notches on its future phones

image
Samsung has stood as the major holdout in a year when seemingly every other smartphone maker moved to releasing displays with a notch cutout. But at the company’s developer conference today, Samsung confirmed that it’s soon going to join in on the trend. A slide during the keynote showed several notch designs that are almost certainly coming to Samsung-branded devices in 2019 and beyond.

Hassan Anjum, a director of product marketing at Samsung, took the stage to highlight Samsung’s previous breakthroughs in reducing bezels and maximizing display size year after year. “We’re going to keep going. The bezels are going to shrink even further,” Anjum said. “We’re going to push the limits with our new lineup: the Infinity U, V, and O displays. These are new concepts that are just around the corner, and I can’t wait to tell you more about them.”

Infinity U: This basically looks identical to the Essential Phone’s notch design. It’s a small half oval that cuts down into the top middle of the display.

Infinity V: Similar to Infinity U, but with four edges instead of a curved half-oval.

Infinity O: This is a full circular cutout of the display and not so much a “notch” the top edge of the screen. Still, it seems like an eyesore and it’s hard to imagine reaction to this being very positive. What’s gained by that little area of display above it? Asus seems to be exploring a similar idea for its ZenFone 6, and feedback has been overwhelmingly bad.

New Infinity: This looks to be a completely notchless display. Anjum didn’t discuss this one onstage, and the technology isn’t quite there to allow for this design just yet. That said, Samsung could be exploring the idea of a slider phone that would house the selfie camera and other components somewhere outside their usual location.

So enjoy the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 while they’re here, as they represent the last generation of Samsung smartphones to have a traditional screen design.

Samsung has routinely poked fun at Apple for the notch introduced on the iPhone X last year. Presumably, Samsung will highlight the minimal display area affected by its new designs when they eventually ship as part of upcoming consumer phones.

Why the fu*k is everybody racing to these dumb bezel-less displays?? Bezels actually serve a purpose as it's where you can actually hold the fu*kin phone without touching the screen

I hate all these mega corporations equally

Nah it's pretty accurate unfortunately. They had a developer conference today. Now that part about the S9 and Note could be bullsh*t, but they fact that they're making anything with a notch is a major L

They showed off that foldable phone too. Not sure why this really even exists for any reason other than bragging rights and novelty tho. These types of devices always suck at both the the things they're trying to do. It wont be good folded or unfolded and people will just want a regular phone instead of a gimmick

guess it was just a matter of time if true...let everyone ride the stupid wave, take your time to act like you're not going to take part but eventually you join stupidity...the worst thing is the excuses they use to justify those changes...just say you want to be a follower of dumb sh*t

Right. Highly doubt there will be a Galaxy flagship with a notch.

What's more likely is Samsung will sell these notched displays to other OEMs or use these displays on mid to low range phones.

They're too close to mass-producing an all-screen display to release a flagship with a notch now.

They've been "removing" the headphone jack since the S8.

This is different. I can't see any practical use for a foldable phone.

Folded, it's too small to do anything other than make calls and maybe reply to texts.

Unfolded, it's too big for normal use. Imagine trying to type a message on this when it's unfolded in like the mall or or a restaurant or something

You're an iPhone dude right? How's that Samsung screen on your iPhone holding up?

The cover screen can be used for any daily task. It's 4.6" so it's not too small to be useful.

Once the phone is unfolded, the obvious use case is media consumption. This should effectively k*ll tablets (which are already on their way out).

What you said is exactly why we have 5-6 inch screens now. That size screen can accomplish both of the tasks you just named with no compromises.

Consumers want bigger screens. We've reached a limit of one-handed usability at 6 inches. This device allows the size increase trend to continue while still maintaining a form that is usable with one hand.

This isn't really the first foldable phone, it's just the first foldable screen. I've used foldable phones before and they don't really have any purpose other than novelty. Remember the Kyocera Echo? (Came out in 2011)

[pic - click to view]

Most people will just get a regular a*s phone that works better and is cheaper. These foldable phones are awful for both jobs they're created to do. Who wants a tiny a*s 4 inch screen and who wants a tablet with a big a*s crease in the middle of the screen?

Didn't say this was the first foldable phone. Also, the Kyocera Echo is trash. It's nothing more than 2 screens slapped together. No one was buying anything that bulky pretending to be a phone.

I'm willing to bet most people will get on board and buy these foldable phones in the coming years. Literally all the big manufacturers have them in the works, even Apple. It's inevitable that they become mainstream once both Samsung and Apple are marketing them to the public.

That being said, you sound exactly like the naysayers of the first Galaxy Note. We see how that turned out.

Unbreakable, foldable phones are the future. Resistance against King Sam is futile.
