The Bootleg Nikes that Got Banned by Big Tobacco

In 2006, New York City designer Ari Saal Forman dropped a limited run of Menthol 10s, a one-of-a-kind sneaker that drew inspiration from and took a shot at Nike and Newport. Written right there on the tongue, Ari explained that the shoe was “dedicated to the two brands that have taken the most and given the least.” Once the companies got word that the shoe was out, they did everything they could to get it off the market.

Ari wound up getting a cease-and-desist letter from Nike and facing an aggressive lawsuit from Newport. To this day, he’s not even legally allowed to own a pair. VICE met up with Ari in Manhattan to hear the inside story of why he made the Menthol 10s, and why he took on a legal battle in the name of conscious consumerism.

He stole the whole design of 2 licensed products, I don't know what he thought was gonna happen. Lost a lot of money to trying to prove a point that no one paid attention to. Nikes and cigs both still sell out even with inflation.

"Stole"? Do you just not understand how art or parodies work?

As far as I'm concerned a whole Vice video with 700k views and growing is plenty of attention. Was it worth whatever Nikeport's lawyers ran his pockets for? Probably not, but if you watch the video he admits he was ill prepared to p!ss off Daddy Supercorp

Honestly, the way I see it, this Ari guy is pretty genius. These companies give a rats a.ss about you. He got these fools to mobilize like they had something to lose. In a world where we're more and more like cattle to these anonymous monoliths, any statement loud enough to make them act is a powerful one

Yes, stole. I don't know why you arguing against basic licensing issues but go ahead. You go out there and try to make 'art' with other brands logos, and whole designs, on them and see how far you get selling it in NYC. Even Bapes are able to use the AF1 design like they do cause they got a deal with Nike.

You over here defending a guy who worked with both companies without any moral issues and it wasn't a problem until they wouldn't let him do what he wanted. Dude didn't do this out the kindness of his heart or to bring awareness to an issue with cigarettes. He had these sh*ts made in China and had hypebeasts lined up to buy overpriced 'limited edition' sneakers the same as Nike. Only difference between him and other bootleggers is he tried to make a profit off Tobacco and they wasn't having it, he's not a martyr of any sort. Just another culture vulture trying to make a profit off Hip Hop fashion.

That's a little disingenuous

I'm not comfortable with the notion that it's ok when Nike and Newport is making money off of 'culture'. (Them sneakers made in China too homie)

...but not a bootleg sneaker artist who ill bet money is probably closer to the streets than anonymous a.ss Mark Parker and whoever the fu*k owns RJ Reynolds .

How are you defending two brands that have, to even the most casual observer, caused disproportionate suffering directly and indirectly ? I'm not here to stand on a soapbox and evangelize anybody, ESP a hypebeast... but Newports and Nike's have actually gotten people k!lled. You think they litigated to protect their brand?

They pulled the lawyers out because he embarrassed them
