Aug 7 - Tariffs claim another victim.

Element Electronics, a consumer electronics company in South Carolina, says it will be closing its plant in Winnsboro due to tariffs imposed by President Trump.

The State reported Tuesday that the company was one of the largest remaining employers in Fairfield County after the local Walmart, which used to be the largest grocery store in the county, closed its doors two years ago.

The news also comes after plans were canceled to build two nuclear reactors in the area, terminating 5,000 construction jobs.

I wonder what type of manufacturing plant it was...either way it's a red state so those employees probably voted for Trump anyway...you get what you paid for.

People don't understand how much it's effecting manufacturing. My company has been in constant negotiations with both our vendors and our customers. It's been a lot of back and forth on pricing and jobs. This whole unnecessary trade war Trump started is having a bad effect on manufacturing, especially ones that specialize in electronic sensors. The photo eyes and laser scanners we use went up in price by like 10%.

President Donald Trump’s tariffs have caused a TV-manufacturing company's plant to lay off 94 percent of its employees. It has scheduled the closing of its Winnsboro, South Carolina, plant for October.

Element Electronics sent a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce on Monday. The letter, which the state Department of Employment provided to Newsweek, said the reason for the layoff and closure was “the new tariffs that were recently and unexpectedly imposed on many goods imported from China, including the key television components used in our a*sembly operations in Winnsboro.” Up to 126 of 134 full-time employees will be laid off after the company closes its plant on October 5.

The notice also said there would be no “bumping,” which means senior workers and newer hires at Element Electronics would experience the same level of risk when being laid off. Those being laid off include one warehouse clerk and one vice president of finance. The company hopes to reopen in three to six months following the closing date but said it could not predict when it would reopen with certainty. An eight-member skeleton crew will remain at the facility.

Following the shutdown of a Walmart location two years ago, Element Electronics became one of Fairfield County's largest employers, according to a report by The State. The article reported tariffs have also caused BMW to alert U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that 45,000 more jobs could be at risk in South Carolina. Tariffs may also cause Volvo to go back on its promise to hire 4,000 people in the state.

The tariffs have hit global companies, including Coca-Cola. Because of the aluminum tax, Coca-Cola said it would raise the prices of its products in the U.S. rather than close, Newsweek reported last week.

The letter follows the closing of a textile mill in Midlands County, South Carolina, and the shutdown of a nuclear plant project in Fairfield County last summer. On the loss of the textile mill, DuraFiber, Winnsboro Mayor Roger Gaddy said at the time it would be “very difficult for the town and for the citizens and for the community. The town of Winnsboro sells natural gas to DuraFiber and we will be losing that business."

Neither the mayor’s office nor Element Electronics could be immediately reached for further comment.

That's impossible with our system.

Can't be "haves" without "have nots".

I think that's how most Americans like it too.

fu*k what these liberals say, the tariffs are the right thing to do but Trump's timing was off, which is going to cost dearly. Tariffs are to protect domestic industry but the problem is that we don't really have much domestic industry anymore and a lot of companies here are reliant on getting a lot of their products from overseas. Products such as machine parts, metals, raw building materials, and so on. We don't produce a lot of those things here anymore.

Had Trump waited until either our industry returned or we rebuilt our domestic industry, the tariffs would have helped a lot to stimulate domestic economic activity. By the way, if Trump is serious about rebuilding our infrastructure, these tariffs are not going to help to accomplish that since we'd probably have to get the materials overseas. Yet another reason to work on rebuilding domestic industry.

If we're also manufacturing and building domestically, the tariffs would have also went a long ways towards decreasing the cost of living of Americans.
you sound like “the liberals are right but fu*k what they’re saying because they’re liberals, but here is why trump was wrong"

you’re a fu*king idiot

Meaning liberals (and conservatives) are right to condemn the move.
