New 'ESPN+' Streaming Service Launching April 12 for $4.99/Month

ESPN today announced that it will launch its new streaming service, which it's calling "ESPN+", on Thursday, April 12. The service will be integrated into a "re-imagined" version of the ESPN app, and include thousands of live sporting events, original shows and films, exclusive studio programs, and a back catalog of on-demand content.

ESPN+ will cost subscribers $4.99 per month ($49.99 per year), and out-of-market packages for both MLB.TV and NHL.TV will be available during respective seasons for an additional $24.99 per month. ESPN said that more details about its new service will come out in the next few days, including more information on the redesigned ESPN app.

ESPN did tease some information about the new app, saying it will include sports scores, news, and highlights, authenticated live streaming with "TV everywhere" video, ESPN Radio and podcasts, the ESPN+ service, and more.

For ESPN+, the company is promising subscribers more than 180 MLB and NHL games, a year-round boxing schedule, more than 250 MLS games, college sports, PGA events, and more.

No mention of NBA or NFL games, no thanks. If ESPN had a legit streaming service it would really deal a huge blow to Cable companies. A lot of people only have cable because of sports.

Idk. You could just get a basic cable package and get this for 4.99. I think most cable companies charge more than that for just espn 1,2 and U

the 4.99 thing is fine, but why would anyone purchase nhl/mlb packages from them when you can get them direct for the same price? at least offer a deal?

ESPN can only do what's allowed within their agreements with those leagues.

NFL is very particular about streaming rights.

The NFL's deals with companies is a massive sh*t show, so don't expect that to change any time soon.

I mean... they see people getting rid of cable, and think they can go with the netflix model.

I'm not going to hate on them making their service more readily available.

But it really depends on how well the app is integrated.

If it comes with insider (web) access, I think I might have to give it a try.

While this is true, I think ESPN will be alright.

Yahoo was recently airing CBS games this past year, and many local regional networks have been live streaming their NBA/NHL/MLB teams games on their respectively websites too.

ESPN has enough reach that they could work out deals with all these leagues.

MLB Media actually owns most ESPN's Infrastructure. MLB's revenue really really close to the NFL. Very Close. The best thing that happened to MLB. Was CTE the Black American Player gonna come back to MLB.

MLBAM also runs and/or owns the official web sites of Minor League Baseball, YES Network (the television broadcaster of the New York Yankees), SportsNet New York (the television broadcaster of the New York Mets).[citation needed] It has also provided the backend infrastructure for WWE Network, WatchESPN, ESPN3, HBO Now, and PGA Tour Live.[4][5]

it's great if you like MLS, boxing, Rugby, or Cricket. Also, it's just the initial phase. I doubt it will look like this later on down the line, it's the first step to ending these major cable companies who have held us hostage forever.
