Two men working on a Queens building were arrested Tuesday after a cop was struck in the head with a falling brick, police said.
The cop was on Maspeth Ave. near 59th St. in Maspeth about 12:30 p.m., talking to the building owner when the brick fell from the roof, striking him.
“(The cop) was talking to the owner. Next thing I know police came from everywhere," said a 70-year-old neighbor. “There’s still blood on the sidewalk.”
A construction worker had thrown the brick at a fellow hardhat at the roof of the building during an argument, but missed, police sources said.
As the cop radioed a 10-13 for an officer in need of assistance, officers threw him in the back of a squad car and rushed him to Wyckoff Hospital, where he suffered a minor injury.
The two construction workers were apprehended near the scene, police said. Charges are pending.
Cops were called when neighbors complained that they were working on the home without valid permits and were digging deeper than allowed, undermining the foundation.
At about the same time, a construction worker swiped a phone from a woman outside the building, neighbor Richie Zapolski said.
“The culprit asks for her phone. He walks away and then she says, ‘Where the hell are you going with my phone?’" Zapolski, 71, said. "She gets her phone back. In the meantime the inspectors call the police."
A few moments later, two construction workers on the roof get in a spat — and the cop was struck by the brick.
"The guy was bleeding a lot," he said. "They say he's going to be alright."
Cops swarmed the building once a report was put out that an officer needed assistance.
“A lot police showed up,” said Nick Calandrillo, 23. “Some ran straight to the back. Some of them used the driveway next door. I saw them come out with one guy in handcuffs."
While residents said the permits plastered on the building were expired, city records show that the building owner had permission to gut and renovate the two-story building until November.
