Marvel Universe vs DC Films: Their 1st 4 Years

image

The Justice League marks the 4th year in live-action film for the DCEU...lets see how it compares to Marvel's first 4 years. High scores in red, Low scores in yellow

Marvel Cinematic Universe Live Action Feature Films
Name - Year/Gross/Rotten Tomatoes Score

1. Iron Man - 2008/$585.2 million/94%
2. The Incredible Hulk - 2008/$263.4 million/67%
3. Iron Man 2 - 2010/$623.9 million/73%
4. Thor - 2011/$449.3 million/77%
5. Captain America: The First Avenger - 2011/$370.6 million/80%
6. Marvel's The Avengers - 2012/$1.519 billion/92%

MCU Gross Avg: $635.2 million
MCU RT Avg: 80.5%

DC Extended Universe Live Action Feature Films
Name - Year/Gross/Rotten Tomatoes Score

1. Man of Steel - 2013/$668 million/55%
2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - 2016/$873.3 million/27%
3. suicide Squad - 2016/$745.6 million/26%
4. Wonder Woman - 2017/$821.8 million/92%
5. Justice League - 2017/$281.5 million*/40%

DCEU Gross Avg: $777.2 million (*Justice League excluded)
DCEU RT Avg: 48%
---------------

Take Away:
Marvel's first 4 years of films were better received by critics (80.5% vs 48%) and more spread out across the years. The more even time spacing between Marvel movies seems to have gave them time to analyze and improve their films relative to DCEU's bunched releases. Marvel had 4 characters featured in movies prior to their ensemble Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America), DC had 3 characters featured in movies prior to their ensemble Justice League (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman).

DC seems more interested in making high grossing blockbusters with their A-list comic characters ($777.2 million average Gross for DC) , Marvel seemed more interested (or forced) in building up to an event (Marvel's The Avengers - $1.519 billion Gross) with their B-listers...since Fox/Sony had the rights to Marvel's most popular heroes/villains.

Their films imo are far more entertaining and more likeable. The comedy doesn't come off as too corny either

I'mma post a thread later that breaks down DCEU fandom, and how it developed alongside the unraveling of WB's ambition for DC films.

Umm DC chose a different route with Christopher Nolan with a universe that could never tie into any of their other movies. The greatest trilogy in comic book movies. They played their hand. I don't think anyone would want it any other way except the connection of superhero movies. Imagine MOS jumping right in with Bale. Marvel had a lot of bad early movies which people seem to forget while DC has two. BVS and SS

In all fairness, Hulk & Thor were not good movies. No way those percentages are free of bias.

No, itís just in the scale of superheroes no gives a fu*k about no Wonder Woman except feminists. Thatís why it was rated so high and deemed a classic when it was nothing more than average, with one of the worst third acts in all of comic book movies.

Let's see.....

Superman vs Iron Man
Batman V Superman vs Hulk
suicide Squad (Batman) vs Iron Man 2
Wonder Woman vs Thor 1
Justice League vs Avengers

My take is Marvel put in work years ago and put life back into CMB's with their building block movies for the MCU and the public enjoyed them as the rating show.

DC finally caught on years after and decided to take the "short cut" into building the DCEU.

BvS - made money in title alone (how could it not)

SS - (DC's GOTG which they stuffed Batman into to boost sales)

WW - (see Captain America 1 same movie years later)

Those first 4 DC films listed are supposed to gross more than single character early Marvel movies.

JLA vs Avengers - No contest Avengers is a "Billy Goat" due to all the hard work Marvel put in early and the high approval ratings.

If you compare the first of each of the companies movies from the same year it looks like this....

MOS (2013) $668 million - Iron Man 3 (2013) $1.2 Billion

BvS (2016) $874 Million - CA3 Civil War (2016) 1.3 Billion

SS feat BM (2016) $746 Million - Dr. Strange (2016) $677 Million

WW (2017) $821 Million - GOTG 2 (2017) $863 Million

JLA (2017) $281 Million currently - Thor 3 (2017) $738 Million currently

Spiderman Home Coming (2017) - $880 Million

(doubt JLA will catch either Thor or Spider-Man)
