EA Sports may move to a subscription based gaming.

image

In an interview with Bloomberg, EA chief Andrew Wilson floated the possibility that his company might drop annual sports game releases in favor of updates or subscriptions. The publisher could treat the games as a "365-day, live service," he said. Instead of buying FIFA or Madden every year, you might pay a regular fee or download content to keep it relevant.

Wilson argued that the shift toward internet content made this possible. When sales are moving from plastic discs to online stores, why not treat games more like services? There would be challenges if EA embraced the internet fully by offering streaming games instead of downloads (what does the game look like when it's not on a home machine?), but it's notable that this is even a realistic option.

The executive didn't suggest pricing, let alone offer a timetable.

I'll stick to the $30 (or less) a year and just wait 6 months for them to hit the vault.

Gotta make Madden and Live better first and release new content, i.e. f!ght Night, NCAA Football, etc... No one will subscribe for trash.

if this does happen i would expect the monthly and annual payments to get increased. probably would be best to buy a bunch of the redeemable serial codes when they go on sale for $30 and hold onto them.

This will NEVER happen:

1. They make a ton of money just off promotion every year (cover athlete announcements, player rating announcements, tournaments, etc)

2. EA is an awful company and they don't give a fu*k about the fans. Making a slightly different game annually is more profitable so that's what they will continue to do.

Basically nothing will ever change until Madden gets some competition or if people start voting with their wallet and stop buying it, but there are multiple threads in the Bx gaming section with a bunch of flunkies screaming "day one cop" on bullsh*t so sales won't drop any time soon either.

this isnt an official announcement from EA so nothing is being changed for EA access subscriptions, its just speculation on what they MIGHT plan on doing in the future.

ya i highly doubt EA goes fully subscription based as long as they have the NFL rights to them selves.

if some one like rockstar does it then it would be some sh*t cause i definitely see them doing subscription based games with GTA's online mode in the future.

For this to work they have to add a sh*t ton more games imo....especially f!ght night...i really dont understand how this hasn't been made yet they've even changed the engine ufc runs on. Boxing is alive and well people wanna play a boxing game no doubt.

Pretty sure it would be like EA Access and once you cancel the next month you wouldn't have access to the games.

This makes sense. People are wising up. Not many people are buying all the games every year anymore and maybe picking one at the most so they could double up their money. I know their sales are down and they are re-releasing games with roster updates anyways. I've been blindly buying EA NHL for almost 20 years. That sh*t ended this year. Ended with Madden 7 years ago. They got me for Fifa so $60 but next year it might be $0. Pretty sure it would just be EA Sports games or maybe they will have tiers. $10 for Sports and $20 for all EA games

So $120 a year to play Madden, Fifa, NHL, UFC, Live, and Tiger Woods. I'd probably pull the trigger on that but if they keep their same business model probably getting $0 from me next year.

From what I gather it's cheaper to make UFC because all the f!ghters are under the brand and therefore their likeness is licensed. Boxing doesnt have a governing body and they have to negotiate with each boxer for his image. Apparently the cost outtweighed the profit as FNC only sold about 1.8 million. Makes sense from a business standpoint but the fans lost. We all know EA don't give a fuk about the consumer.

Yea but at the same time that makes sense....you wanna put out a quality product but if you're not gonna make money in the long run as a business i wouldn't do it either...just wish something could be done....

2k made a boxing game and it was terrible. Maybe if EA licensed one big name f!ghter for the cover like Canelo (Mayweather would be perfect but folks would avoid it just cause he's on the cover) and had maybe 5 boxers in each division but had an extensive create-a-f!ghter and legacy/online modes, it may do ok. I want a boxing game so bad but I think it's gone along with college sports games

It's inevitable and better business for them. They're already eating a lot off of MUT and testing how much they can get away with.

I saw them charging $5 for a damn jersey a few weeks ago.

I'd love 2K football back but I honestly don't even want them to get exclusivity. I don't want anybody to get the NFL exclusive license going forward because it k!lls competition.

I want the NFL to let whoever use the license. Take it back to the way it used to be. Bring back 2K. Bring back Joe Montana football. Bring back Blitz. Bring back Quarterback Club. sh*t they could even bring back NFL Gameday from PS1. (They need to fix that spin move tho if the bring back Gameday. That sh*t was LITERALLY unstoppable)

We just need competition because EA is lazy as fu*k. I LOVE football and I haven't bought an NFL game in about a decade because EA refuses to fix Madden and it's the only game on the market. SUPER frustrating...

Might be time for them to start pushing physical discs again cause ISPs not gonna give a fu*k so in theory...if you multilayer a blu ray disk you can get that 100+ GBs off a disk

+ i'm hearing EA wants to start their own online service like netflix and amazon where you would pay monthly to start playing games instead of buying the full game it self.

I was down with it at first.

For instance gran Turismo 5 on the ps3...I played that sh*t for like 3-4 years and they would update the game every year. I figured why canít 2k do this and just give us a roster/gameplay update every fall.

This ea sh*t tho is worse u wonít even own a game.
