Mercedes Benz AMG Project ONE Hypercar - $2.72 Million Dollar Beast

image

Mercedes-Benz finally showed off the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Showcar at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt today. It’s a wild new hypercar that the company’s been teasing for a few weeks time.

It seems to have been well worth the wait. The Project ONE is everything you’d want from a ludicrous vehicle that sounds like a concept, but will actually be produced and sold. Of course, it has an equally ludicrous €2.275 million ($2.72 million) price tag to match.

It’s not just inspired by Mercedes’ Formula One team, it’s actually built around the 1.6-liter V6 hybrid that Lewis Hamilton is using to lead the 2017 F1 championship. It has more than 1,000 horsepower and a top speed of “beyond” 217 mph, which excites me even if it makes me wonder exactly what Mercedes means by that. The car also has an aerodynamic “shark fin” running down its spine that’s similar to the one being used on the current F1 car, though that’s a more curious choice since the series has banned that piece of tech for next season.

The interior takes cues from the F1 car, too, with the obvious focus being the racing-inspired wheel and seats. But you at least get a few creature comforts that aren’t otherwise found inside Mercedes’ Grand Prix competitor, like two big digital displays, air conditioning, and a dock for your smartphone in the center console.

Other motorsports cues are present here, too. The swoopy Project ONE Showcar has the exotic side profile of a Le Mans prototype racer, and from certain angles, even looks like some of McLaren’s recent track-ready supercars. I think that’s a good thing for Mercedes, which hasn’t experimented with the look of its performance cars in a while. And I’m sure I’m not the only one that is a bit jealous Hamilton got to hop into one already, even if it was probably against a green screen.

But, as if the price weren’t restrictive enough, Mercedes says it’s only going to build 275 of these surreal hypercars. That means the Project ONE Showcars will probably move quickly, and almost exclusively to the kinds of uber-rich enthusiasts who already own the few other hypercars it resembles.

Finally a REAL answer for the 918. That Petronas color-scheme too...

I was wondering when MB would just say fu*k it and start throwing F1 power-units into road cars like motorcycle companies started doing with their GP/road bikes with their track record as of late.

Gorgeous car.

Most dominating F1 car's DNA built around arguably two of the greatest drivers ever. Instant classic, imo.

Hope Lewis & Nico get one-off versions like Schumi did a FXX.

Personally? I think the hybrids are mad underrated sound wise.

@ :10 secs

Going to be nothing like it on the road.

Can't hang in the twisties. And in F1 nowadays? They're barely mid-pack last few years.

Built around the hybrid V6 turbo Merc is using in F1 right now. Cool stuff.

Edit: tech from 2015 f1 championship car jumped the gun but engine specs comparable

Those engines won't last long. They'll need to be rebuilt at around 31k miles.

"After 31,000 miles, the engines would either be rebuilt by AMG or, depending on the work needed, replaced, and AMG didn't rule out customers choosing to buy the car with a spare engine ready to go. As an aside, it has yet to put a price tag on either a new engine or a rebuild."

They have the best hybrid-racing technology in the world and that's where that segment is going direction wise (918, P1, etc). It's actually perfect they would throw their hat in.

You'd be surprised. For one...I doubt 20 years from now a single AMG One will have even 15k miles on the odometer. It's hard to come across a $250K Ferrari with 20k miles let alone a car like this. I've never even seen a Ferrari F40 with more than 20k miles and they're 30 years old now.

Secondly...You gotta realize it's a production F1 engine. The full-on race power-units have a life of about 750-1000 miles give or take...Mercedes of course being on the high-end of that spectrum in the turbo-hybrid era. They're bulletproof on the racetrack for the most part thus far in the harshest conditions you can put a car under. Street-driving won't be sh*t compared to what that engine normally takes. If Lewis Hamilton can't break it...Joe Blow driving point A-B with all those computer a.ssists and rev-limiters won't either.

I understand all that 100%. I'm a fan of the car, I drive an AMG myself. The point I'm making is that it's unprecedented to have to fully replace the engine at any set interval. None of the other cars you mentioned require the engine to be replaced. They may require an engine out service maybe every 15k-30k miles but not a full on replacement.

I dig it but imo they should've went a little more aggressive on the exterior design. Perhaps not as aggressive as the Veneno but along those lines
