Venus Williams, the world’s former top-ranked tennis player, was the driver at fault in a two-car crash in Florida on June 9 that k*lled a passenger in the other vehicle, according to the initial police report on the incident released on Thursday.

News of the fatal wreck near Williams’ home in Palm Beach Gardens surfaced in media accounts on Thursday, days before the 37-year-old athlete was planning to compete at Wimbledon, which begins in England next week.

An accident report filed by the investigating police officer, given to Reuters by the city clerk’s office, said Williams was to blame for failing to yield the right of way to another motorist at a four-way intersection.

The report said the other driver, Linda Barson, 68, had just entered the intersection on a green light when she reported seeing Williams’ sport utility vehicle “cut across in front” of her and “was unable to avoid crashing into” Williams.

Another motorist who saw the accident also told police Barson had a green light when Williams crossed in front of her.

According to the report, Williams told police she drove into the intersection after exiting from another street on a green light, but stopped at the median break to wait for cross-traffic to clear, then proceeded without seeing Barson.

“The driver of (Williams’ car) is at fault for violating the right of way of”, the investigating officer concluded.

Barson’s passenger, identified in the report as Jerome Barson, 78, was taken to a Florida trauma center. He died 13 days later, according to the Palm Beach county medical examiner.

The police report estimated Williams was traveling at about 5 miles per hour (8 kph) at the time of impact and was not distracted or suspected of any drug or alcohol use.

Williams’s attorney, Malcolm Cunningham, did not directly address the accident report’s finding that his client was at fault, but said the tennis star was not issued “any citations or traffic violations.”

He expressed condolences to the man’s family and said he had no reason to believe the accident would affect Williams’ plans to play at Wimbledon. There was no indication in the report that she was injured.

“This is an unfortunate accident, and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one,” Cunningham said.

An attorney for the Barson family did not return a call seeking comment.

Williams is currently ranked 11th in the world and seeded 10th at the Wimbledon tournament, which she has won five times.

Who had the green light? You are aware that the victim, according to the witness as well, had the green light, and not Venus, right?

There's a lawsuit pending, I believe, and Venus has that $$$ to cover it, so she'll be OK. but 1000 Bluntz is surely right, she's gonna feel like sh*t for a long time for this. Just an accidental tragedy...

Venus Williams is being sued for her role in a tragic car accident that left a woman injured and her 78-year-old husband dead.

The wrongful death suit, filed by the victims’ attorney Michael Steinger, accuses Williams of failing to yield the right of way on June 9 when she sped through a Florida intersection despite having a red light. It also claims she was driving recklessly and too fast, ultimately creating an environment in which a crash was inevitable, TMZ reported.

A Hyundai traveling in the Palm Beach Garden area T-boned the back end of Williams' SUV after the athlete entered the intersection.

The Hyundai “was crushed, the front windshield shattered, the airbags deployed, there was crush damage to the rear on the driver’s side, and the back window was shattered” as a result of the impact, according to the suit obtained by TMZ.

Jerome Barson, who was a passenger in the car, experienced internal bleeding, a fractured spine and suffered severe internal organ damage. the 78-year-old man died two weeks later on June 22, his wife, Linda's, 68th birthday.

Linda, who was driving the Hyundai, suffered several broken bones and a cracked sternum.

Steinger is seeking an unspecified amount of damages for pain and suffering, medical and funeral expenses, loss of earnings, and loss of companionship on behalf Linda Barson and the families.

Linda and Jerome had been married for 33 years.

A rep for the 37-year tennis star previously told website Williams was only going 5 mph when she passed through the intersection and that the light was still green. Williams blamed the traffic that day, claiming it did not allow her vehicle to completely clear the intersection in time.

The wrongful death suit accuses Williams of failing to yield the right of way on June 9 when she sped through a Florida intersection despite having a red light.

Palm Beach Gardens Cops said there was no evidence seven-time Grand Slam champion was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The California-native is currently seeded tenth for Wimbledon, which kicks off on Monday.

Her lawyer Michael Cunningham, following the release of the police report, called the incident "an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one."

The Barson’s attorney did not immediately respond to the Daily News’ request for comment.

No she's at fault because she failed to yield 0 speed does not matter... old lady could have been 125mph and the fault would stay the same.. its the light that is the deciding factor.

Come on man.. imagine you were driving down the street, going thru an inter section on a green light and someone making a right hand turn smashes into the side of your car... you wanna be at fault for that???

Evidence of you being drunk on BX again haha
this makes absolutely no sense your projecting you the one thats drunk.
she was driving through a green light. Traffic jam in front of her so the light turned red while she was stuck in the intersection. Then a car hit her. wtf you talm bout.

what in the fk is going on in this thread??

Old lady had the green light - Venus failed to yield - shes at fault end of story

I am a claims adjuster... we actually determine the fault, not the police. We base fault off a chart of rules - Venus failed to yield so she's at fault.

Doesn't matter if she was not charged. ( side story, you can be charged with speeding, DUI, Wreckless driving etc and still be held NOT at fault of you were say.. rear ended, or side swiped.)

We use police reports to help determine fault but mostly its used to gather information on all parties involved.

With that being said her Insurance companies lawyers may try to argue the color of the light and hope for a 50/50 settlement.
Not reading followed by claiming racism, the norm.

The onus on the driver (Venus) to foresee this happening and to act accordingly

anyway heres a better report.

Venus Williams is being sued for breaking traffic laws in the build-up to a crash earlier this month that led to the death of a 78-year-old man, according to documents obtained by CNN's Jillian Martin.

It's been reported Williams has been named in the lawsuit after Jerome Barson died from injuries suffered in the June 9 crash in Palm Beach County, Florida, when the car he was a passenger in collided with Williams' vehicle.

The documents, which were emailed to B/R, allege Venus "negligently operated or maintained the Toyota Sequoia so that she collided with a 2016 Hyundai Accent that was being operated by Linda Barson and occupied by her husband, Jerome Barson," per Martin.

The suit also says Williams failed to yield the right of way, failed to stop at a red light, failed to obey a traffic control device, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to stop for oncoming traffic, was driving too fast for the conditions, drove carelessly and recklessly and was distracted while driving.

Barson died almost a fortnight after the crash having sustained a fractured spine as well as massive internal organ damage and internal bleeding.

The impact caused damaged to both vehicles, per the suit. The Hyundai was "crushed, the front windshield shattered, the airbags deployed, there was crush damage to the rear on the driver’s side, and the back window was shattered." Williams' SUV "was also severely damaged."

TMZ wrote that a police report said Williams was to blame for the crash, although her attorney, Malcolm Cunningham, said she was travelling through a green light at only five miles per hour entering the intersection.

Williams is said to have not been under the influence of any alcohol or drugs when the crash took place, but Malika Andrews of the New York Times reported witnesses told investigators the light was red as she entered the intersection.

Williams is seeded 10th in the 2017 Wimbledon Championship and is scheduled to make her 20th appearance in the competition on Monday, July 3.

Tragic story, I hope his family gets millions of dollars out of Venus. Rich famous people need to use Uber, call a cab or hire a professional full time driver. She doesn't care about my opinion anyway because her and Serena are Olympic gold medal doubles tennis champs for the country called :mspaintmjchoke: :mspaintchoke:

Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection where her SUV was T-boned by a Hyundai in which the passenger was k*lled ... this according to just-released surveillance video and new police information.

The video shows Venus' black SUV entering the intersection but slows down for a car that turned in front of her. It appears Venus' light had turned red while she was waiting for the car to pass. The Hyundai then had a green light and was traveling at around 25 MPH in the intersection when it slammed into the SUV.
Looks like Venus wasn't in the wrong, and neither was Barson. Barson if anything could have been more attentive, but that's why they're called accidents.
