Saddam Hussein Was Apparently Quite the Mary J. Blige Fan

No hateration or holleration here.

According to the new book The Prisoner in His Palace: Saddam Hussein, His American Guards, and What History Leaves Unsaid — written by former Army infantry officer Will Bardenwerper, who interviewed numerous members of the squad tasked with guarding and protecting Hussein — one of Hussein’s greatest pleasures in the weeks leading up his execution was listening to the catchy, soulful tunes of R&B goddess Mary J. Blige.image

“He’d always stop tuning if he stumbled across a Mary J. Blige song” on the radio, the book claims, and he also loved to frequently ride an exercise bike that he coined “Pony.”

image

Additionally, Hussein’s fondness for treats was well-documented among the guards.

“He supposed it made Saddam less intimidating,” Bardenwerper wrote, “that he could yield to the siren call of a sugary muffin the way anyone else might.”

Saddam was a power-balance in the region and maintained stability. This might sound like a terrible statement but him gassing his own people kept them in check. Terrorists weren't creating cells in Iraq during his reign. When Saddam was overthrown, there was a power vacuum left in Iraq creating an imbalance. With that imbalance existing, terrorism started to grow in Iraq.

Saddam was a terrible person, but if he was around today, he would be a check on Iran and all of the other problems in the Middle East

Its fu*ked up, but sometimes i think those dictators had to be dictators for a reason. They knew what their people were capable of and put their foot on their necks.

I don't know, between this and Osama Bin Laden allegedly wanting Bobby Brown dead b/c he loves Whitney Houston's music, people love sensationalizing stories.

You really think Osama Bin Laden really cared for anything produced by the western world, which he considered evil. I'm not naive and I know many of the leaders in Arab nations really don't follow Islam though.

I'm not saying it's not possible, but people love exaggerating stories for publicity. Just like that story that Al Qaeda wanted Eminem dead for mocking Bin Laden in one of his videos

What's interesting to me, too: is how the "dictator" label... only seems to get attached to leaders Korean or darker, these days.

I'm not sure I can name an Black, African ruler from the past 50 years -- besides Mandela -- who wasn't labeled as a dictator. (Despite the fact that Gaddafi, for instance, was immensely popular within his nation...; sent students to college for free, awarded no-interest business loans to first-time entrepreneurs, led the only country in the world that had no debt, etc, etc.)

Same story with Central America.

Dictators on dictators... out, over there.

Meanwhile, over here in democratic America... the presidential race victor, apparently has little to nothing to do, with the (overwhelming) majority of votes cast, by the populace.

(To be fair... Stalin and Hitler did get the "dictator" treatment, along with some other European rulers... post-death [& after the Time Mag "Man of the Year" awards].)
