Breaking: Tom Hardy Cast As Venom In Spider-Man Spinoff Movie

Tom Hardy is making the jump from DC Comics to Marvel Comics in live-action form. The man best known as Bane from The Dark Knight Rises has been cast as Venom in the upcoming Sony Pictures film.

Hardy, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award following his work in The Revenant, is in final negotiations to star as Venom (Eddie Brock) in the self-titled film set for release on October 5, 2018.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's original report, the film is a top priority for Sony Pictures. The studio is eagerly aiming to make the film's 2018 release date.

"Venom is to usher in a host of movies from Sony's Marvel and Spider-Man-based universe of characters," THR's report said. "Sony is rebooting its Marvel-based slate with this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom is a key title in its slate."

Unlike Spider-Man: Homecoming, Venom will not be a joint production with Marvel Studios and Tom Holland's Spider-Man is not set to appear in it. The studio is also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat project within the Venom universe, along with other Spider-Man characters.

The Venom movie will be directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer. It is written by The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Jeff Pinkner, along with Scott Rosenberg. Plot details have been kept quiet at this point. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Amy Pascal are in place to produce the film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has a 4.10 out of 5 ComicBook User Anticipation Rating, making it the eighth most anticipated upcoming comic book movie among ComicBook.com readers. Let us know how excited you are about Spider-Man: Homecoming by giving it your own ComicBook User Anticipation Rating below.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts, from a screenplay by Jonathan M. Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Watts & Christopher Ford and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters July 7, 2017.

Didn't see this coming at all.

I like that's it's rated R, I like the Eddie Brock casting, i like the horror theme.... But i really dislike that Marvel Studios isn't involved and that we'll never get a true Spiderman/Venom story until we're all like 50+ year old in a reboot.

This all sounds like a scheme so Sony can get bread off the Spiderman IP without sharing. It doesnt sound like they genuinely want to make a Venom movie, but it's the best they got.

im HOPING that they introduce him later on ..... if their stories dont have any effect on the mcu .... then there is no reason he cant be a part of things ......

dont have to worry about him changing his background or story if none of the key players have ever been involved with him ....... ie .. spidey ... avengers .... mcu villains .... hey maybe even gotg ......

but its almost like they want no connection to the mcu in case it does bad .. if it fares well ... i see no reason why sony wouldnt want to enhance the brand by letting him team up with mcu for an appearance or two ......

plus ...... maybe disney just wants nothing to do with an R rated comic book flick ....

What is with 90s babies and their affinity for Venom? He's a pretty sh*t character. Literally the "grimdark" version of Spider-Man. What's worse is that he's a "spin-off" character, suggesting that he has enough depth to carry an entire film on his own.

I'm a 90s baby and I still don't get why people like Venom. At least it isn't Carnage, I guess.

this caught me by surprise to be honest.. I mean.. at the end of the day Tom Hardy's performance is always good (all depending on the role he takes).

Now the question is.. How good the script is going to be ? and is sony going to actually keep this universe going ? or after 2nd-3rd film its going to reboot ??

It sucks that it wont connect to the MCU to be honest considering that Spiderman is in there and for gods sake please i don't want another Spider-Man Reboot. Then again my question is.. Can Venom progress without Spider-Man ? Is he going to be a Villain or an Anti-Hero ?
