The mp3 has officially been terminated by the format's developers

image

The rights owner of the digital audio coding format MP3 has officially terminated its licensing program, marking the end of the popular format that helped revolutionize the digital audio industry and has been used for over two decades.

The Fraunhofer Institute, which owns the rights to license the MP3 patent to developers, released an official statement touching on why it will move toward other formats in the future.

The institute recognized that the MP3 is still very popular within the consumer market, but it lacks the quality of today’s industry standard: “Most state-of-the-art media services such as streaming or TV and radio broadcasting use modern ISO-MPEG codecs such as the AAC family or in the future MPEG-H. Those can deliver more features and a higher audio quality at much lower bitrates compared to MP3.”

Today’s industry standard is AAC, or Advanced Audio Coding, which was also mainly developed by the Fraunhofer Institute. With the MP3 licensing program terminated it will likely not see a resurgence due to the low quality of the format.

How this will affect the music industry remains to be seen, as much of the general public still uses MP3. That said, top-tier DJs tend to use other formats, like AIFF or WAV.

They didn't develop the mp3 format. It's from the 70s... the inventor couldn't afford the patent. The inventor also made the first mp3 player in the 70s too. Some dude in the U.K.

The title is decieving you guys. MP3 will work perfectly fine. You can still buy and use filed in the mp3 format. It just that the homie who had the license to it will no longer have it as he won't be eating off of it

The go-to format will be aac now. Better quality than mp3 with a smaller file size.

So basically m4a or mp4 files?

I have a lot of iTunes m4a files. I'm on IOS and may switch to Android next go around, will those work on Android phones?

Doesn't it mean that mp3 will not be able to be used in upcoming products because a license can't be had anymore?

Having difficulty finding flac files, their size, and non-universal support is what made me not really bother with flac.

Plus, a lot of flac files out there are basically bogus and are converted from sh*t like mp3 and m4a files, so there's no difference in sound quality.

The real flac sh*t out there is cool, and I do have some flac files for a few classic soul & hip hop albums. I listen to them once in awhile when I'm at home and listening on the speakers or with the better headphones.

it doesn't really matter because the programs that are out will still work and control the file no matter what? u feel me? if u burn a cd or say u stream it. U are likely to convert it at one point of time or just keep as is...MP3 will still be around just like soulseek whic his like napster in a way.... NO different. People just use newer methods to get sh*t but i think they should get rid of burning overall and streams. People steal m usic from streaming in MP3 & M4a now a days. M4a s9ounds the same as MP3 so i don't see why Itunes would even come out with there own MP3? makes no sense....
