Pokemon GO Has Lost Over 10 Million Users the Past Month

Despite recent events, Pokemon GO’s ability to induce stampedes appears to be slowing down. That’s because while there are still a lot of people are playing Pokemon GO, the player base is not nearly as large as it was when the game peaked in popularity in mid-July.

Bloomberg reports that Pokemon GO was down to just over 30 million daily active users worldwide as of August 16. Again, that is still an enormous number of active players, but it’s a far cry from the more than 40 million who were logging in on the daily as recently as late July. This is despite the augmented reality game not releasing in Europe until mid-July and Japan until late-July.

The data originates from Sensor Tower, SurveyMonkey, Apptopia, and user numbers isn’t the only troubling trend it shows for the game. Downloads, engagement, and time spent playing also showed significant drop-offs since their July heights, with the trend lines continuing downwards. Further, Google Trends shows that while augmented reality got a big boost in search popularity that corresponded with Pokemon GO’s release, it has since fallen off precipitously and is now beginning to approach pre-Pokemon levels.

There were concerns almost immediately following its launch that despite its immense popularity, Pokemon GO could be nothing but a summer fad. Still, Pokemon GO remains the top free game on Google Play and the second most popular game on the App Store. Many industry watchers were worried about how Pokemon’s ubiquity was detracting from other games’ success.

“Given the rapid rise in usage of the Pokemon GO app since the launch in July, investors have been concerned that this new user experience has been detracting from time spent on other mobile focused apps,” explained Axiom Capital Management Senior Analyst Victor Anthony.

Continuing, he added that the recent trends should ease some of those concerns. Developer Niantic isn’t ready to give up on the game, though. Along with releasing an update yesterday, the team stated that it was “still working hard on several new and exciting features to come in the future of Pokemon GO.”
