Microsoft is reportedly planning to counter Sony’s Playstation ‘NEO’ with its next generation 4K-ready Xbox, codenamed Scorpio. According to a report from Kotaku, the new Xbox will feature a more powerful GPU that could handle an Oculus Rift, and will release sometime in 2017.
People familiar with Microsoft’s plans told the publication that the new version will have at least 2TB hard drive,
and deliver 10 TFLOPS of compute performance, though I/O tr@nsfer speed will remain the same which could lead to longer load times for gamers.
Moreover, this Xbox 4K, aka Scorpio,
could leverage AMD’s external GPU enclosure, especially since Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox branch, teased an upgradable hardware for the new console.
When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we’ve ever seen.
You’ll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible because we have a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform that allows us to focus more and more on hardware innovation without invalidating the games that run on that platform.
Sources further believe that Microsoft could follow a PC-like evolution of iterative console releases. Meaning, instead of huge hardware updates every five to seven years, consoles will release every 2-3 years, with full forward and backward compatibility across new versions.
If these rumors are true, we may hear more news on the Xbox “Scorpio” from Microsoft at E3 2016. For now, Redmond is rumored to be planning a smaller and cheaper version of the Xbox One and two new streaming devices at E3.

Like I said in the other thread, don't be surprised to see dual GPU consoles. Thank you AMD for paving the way. #TeamRedYaBish
