Samsung Pay Might Finally Let You Ditch Your Wallet

[pic - click to view]

Mobile payments are here, the adoption of Apple Pay is evidence enough. But Samsung thinks it can do smartphone payments even better (of course), and that's why they've created Samsung Pay, a tech team up that will make mobile payments more accessible than ever.

Samsung will be equipping the Galaxy S6 with two mobile payment options: NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST). NFC you're familiar with—it's what Android phones and the iPhone 6 have used for mobile payments— but MST is a completely different animal previously found in LoopPay, which Samsung recently acquired.

Basically, how it works is when you open the Samsung Pay app, you select a card, and authenticate with Samsung's built-in fingerprint sensor. Then, in what I'm going to just describe as tech magic, the app generates a signal that even old card swipe terminals can recognize. This is awesome because now you can pay with your phone anywhere that isn't some cash-only establishment.

How this will work with chip-and-PIN cards is uncertain, but the service won't be ready until the summer so we have some time to learn even more. One thing is certain though, the S6 will be outfitted to take advantage.

Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition

[pic - click to view]

The original Gear VR headset actually made a little headway, even getting picked up by Best Buy. Its main barrier to entry, aside from its $199 price point, is limited device compatibility: if you don't have a Galaxy Note 4, you can't use the Gear VR. With Samsung today launching not one but two flagship smartphones, the number of VR-compatible smartphones from Samsung has just tripled. Presenting the aptly named Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

Samsung says the new headset is 15 percent smaller than the original (most likely due to the reduction in the phones' screen size -- the S6 has a 5.1-inch display, while the Note 4 has a 5.7-inch unit. It's also claiming improved graphical performance because of the phones' newer, more powerful chips, and improved fidelity thanks to the S6's insanely dense display.
Incidental upgrades aside, the new Gear VR does have a couple of additions over its predecessor: Samsung's redesigned the straps, apparently giving it "better weight balance," and has also introduced mechanical ventilation to make it more comfortable to use the Gear VR for longer periods.

The final upgrade is the introduction of a USB port, which lets you charge your S6 while it's inside the headset.
While that's a welcome change for anyone sitting around at home watching movies on their Gear VR, it does highlight that you won't get as much playtime from the headset as the original. That's because the S6 has a far smaller (2600mAh versus 3220mAh) battery, making charging a necessity for longer sessions, and somewhat negating one the Gear VR's main benefits over the competition -- the fact that it's untethered.

There are no major content announcements to go along with the updated Gear VR. You'll still have access to choice content from Samsung, Oculus and their partners, including 360-degree movies, VR games, and other apps. That means there's still a distinct lack of content -- the current selection basically consists of free demos and experiences -- but hopefully we'll hear something from Oculus on its plans for the Oculus Store soon. As denoted by the "Innovator Edition" tagline, this is very much a work in progress from Samsung and Oculus, with few upgrades over the Note 4 version. There's no word on price or availability, but logic dictates that it'll come in somewhere around the $200 mark and will hopefully be available close to the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge's April launch date.

Looks clean! I love my Note Edge. The only complaint I have is TW. I don't see the need for a dual edge phone. Samsung seems to be stepping up the build quality the last year or so. Now if they can only tone down TW. I'll probably skip this and go with the M9+ though and just swap out phones from day to day. I'll probably get this for my girl for her born day. My M8 and S5 both seem small. Note Series done ruined me.

If you’ve been following the tech scene lately, you’ll have realized that although its complete frenzy at the ongoing CES, Samsung is pretty much keeping it low profile. This is perhaps because Samsung has plans to reveal this round dial ‘Orbis’ smartwatch at the MWC, which is due a little over a month and a half from now.

The Galaxy S6, as well as its S6 Edge sidekick with the curved display, will be the first phones to implement the company's own take on mobile payments. Previously it was rumored that the system will be based on the Burlington, Mass. LoopPay technology, and the latest report in the Korean media confirms that, and ties the launch with the unveiling of the Galaxy S6.

The new mobile payment system doesn't require NFC to be built into phones, but mimics a credit card swipe instead, so it could be accepted at much more merchants than Apple Pay worldwide, currently to the tune of 10 million. Insiders mention it will be available through different providers in different regions, which makes sense, if it will be indeed similar to LoopPay's tech, which you can see detailed in the video below.
