Stoudemire will make $21,679,893 this coming season, which is slightly higher than Carmelo Anthony's $21,490,000 salary. The difference in value between the two seems so much greater mainly because Melo is coming off a season in which he was an MVP candidate and the NBA's scoring champ, while Stoudemire had surgery on both knees and the indications are his minutes will now be limited.

How do the Knicks maximize Stoudemire's value? Let's accept one reality: with two years and $45,090,881 left on his uninsured deal, they won't be trading it this summer.

Perhaps next summer, when it is a large expiring contract, there will be some interest. But for now, the Knicks have to believe Stoudemire will be on their roster for the coming season. Can he give them something in a 25-minute-per-game cap to preserve his knees and still be effective?

The Knicks do have one option if they don't want to wait until next summer: the stretch provision.

UPDATED: A clarification: In the new CBA, you can waive a player and "stretch" the remaining money over 2x remaining years, plus 1. But that is for contracts signed under the new deal.

However, for contracts under the old CBA, you can negotiate the buyout so that the payments can be made over a longer or shorter period.

So let's say the Knicks negotiate a buyout with Stoudemire and he agrees to a payment similar to the stretch provision rule (2x +1). That means they would turn his $21 million cap hit this season and next into $9 million per over five years.

Immediately, that saves them $12.6 million against the cap, which won't get them under it. However, it would get them under the luxury tax apron, which would allow them to execute a sign-and-trade for a free agent. It could also allow them to use the full mid-level exception ($5 million per), rather than the taxpayer's mid-level.

All of this, of course, depends on what they do with their own free agents, mainly J.R. Smith.

Extending Stoudemire's buyout comes with a price, of course. First and foremost, you give up a key player who, when healthy, can help. It's also a mortgage on your payroll going forward, as the team will have $9M of cap space eaten up by Stoudemire through the 2017-18 season. If they endure one more year, they can trade him as an expiring or let his contract melt away for a huge amount of cap space in 2015.

So what is the smarter move here?

keep him and limit his minutes to keep him healthy. its not like he cant score. problem is thats all he can do and nothing else.

fu*k that other option.

1. Rudy Gay is your franchise player

2. You signed Landry Fields to a 3 year deal

3. You just traded for Steve Novak and Marcus Camby

4. You got some 2nd rounders who wont amount to sh*t and a 1st rounder years from now

5. Knicks will be in the playoffs and the Raptors won't

yup, i make 0 sense

1.Rudy about to sign back for less with Masai & you don't know much on raptor's you keep showing everybody because you didn't mention young player's like ross/Jonas (harden trade got turned down because they wanted jonas)

2.Landry has 2 year's left and to be honest he provides a weird type of good Defence off the bench..just don't try to score much

3.you owe bargn 22 million over the next 2 years with nobody rebounding..think about that.

4.You are delusional about those picks

5.Raptor's had multiple games they beat knicks last year...imagine next year

Damn, Knicks just absorbed 12 mil more in cap space Bargs is pretty much replacing Copeland, but I do like the fact they got rid of Novak's one dimensional a.ss and Camby was not healthy, Raps might just buy him out and he can retire.

Knicks fans seem to think Melo won't leave. He has no incentive to stay on the knicks after next season with bargs and Amare still on the books and the lack of draft picks.

that's great, but it could also really hurt you, because who are you gonna get with that cap room? Looked it up, the all star unrestricted free agents of 2015 are:

1. Love (player option)
2. Rondo
3. Aldridge

It looks like Aldridge will be moved to a contender before his contract expires because he wants out now. Suddenly if you don't get Love or Rondo, suddenly because of the cap floor, you are stuck either acquiring contracts that nobody wants, or overpaying lesser free agents more than they are worth.
