Complex: The 25 Best "NBA 2K" Teams Of All Time

image

25. 2004-05 Seattle Supersonics (ESPN NBA Basketball)

Starting Five: Luke Ridnour, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Vladimir Radmanovic, Nick Collison

True story: I once scored 100 points with Rashard Lewis. That's how unstoppably good he was earlier in his career as a 6'10" wing player who could shoot from almost anywhere and get to the rim. In the first five years of the 2K franchise, he was what Durant is in the real world now. This Sonics lineup was the best he had around him, featuring the deadly long-range shooting of Allen, solid work at the point from a young Ridnour (and Antonio Daniels off the bench), plus the Radmanovic as a stretch 4 and the hard-nosed glass-eating of Collison. Brent Barry was no slouch off the bench either.
24. 2006-07 Golden State Warriors (NBA 2K7)
Starting Five: Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Andris Biedrins

There was a reason why this No. 8 seeded team ran the No. 1 seeded Dallas Mavericks out of the first round and it was with speed and long-range shooting. With a wing rotation that included Jason Richardson—one of the best finishers in NBA 2K history—and shooters at both SF and PF from Jackson to Harrington to Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy, this was a deep and energetic team that could run circles around lesser (and sometimes even greater) squads in NBA 2K7.
23. 2006-07 Houston Rockets (NBA 2K7)
Starting Five: Rafer Alston, Tracy McGrady, Shane Battier, Juwan Howard, Yao Ming

This should have been a great team. Instead, Yao broke his right knee in December and missed 32 games. Although he came back in March, the Rockets were eliminated by the Jazz in the playoffs, continuing McGrady's curse of first round exits. But none of that matters to a video game, and this is a well-balanced team anchored by McGrady's scoring and playmaking prowess and Yao's gargantuan rebounding and post scoring skills. Alston (and Luther Head off the bench) are capable shooters and Battier was in his heyday as an unsung lockdown defender.
22. 1999-2000 Philadelphia 76ers (NBA 2K)
Starting Five: Eric Snow, Allen Iverson, George Lynch, Tyrone Hill, Matt Geiger

Don't laugh: the '99-'00 Sixers might have been Iverson and a bunch of random dudes (including a George Lynch who's not the metal guitarist), but as the cover athlete for the NBA 2K series' first edition, Iverson and his game received the most attention from 2K Sports. 2K may have staked its cred on being more sim than NBA Live out of the gate, but playing with Iverson early on was the closest you could get to button-mashing, ankle-breaking heaven with a player. It still mostly holds true for the version of Iverson from the '00-'01 Sixers who appears in NBA 2K13. Nobody puts players on the ground and slithers to the basket like The Answer.
21. 1999-00 Toronto Raptors (NBA 2K)
Starting Five: Muggsy Bogues, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Charles Oakley, Antonio Davis

It's easy to forget about Antonio Davis, maybe because he went to play in Europe after he was drafted in the second round of the 1990 NBA Draft. Because of this, he didn't come to the NBA until he was 25. When he was traded to Toronto he became a starter and held down the frontcourt with one of the most badass men ever to walk the hardwood, Charles Oakley. Add to them Vince Carter in the year he won the Slam Dunk Contest and Tracy McGrady, plus the diminutive, entertaining, and surprisingly reliable Muggsy Bogues and you have a team that was strong defensively and tremendously athletic.
20. 2007-08 Denver Nuggets (NBA 2K8)
Starting Five: Allen Iverson, J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony, Kenyon Martin, Marcus Camby

Let's be real: Iverson was never going to be a point guard. The '07-'08 Nuggets fall squarely into the category of teams with a lot of talent that just couldn't quite fit together on the court. The often volatile personalities of this lineup (which would be in the running for most tattooed lineup in NBA history) meant a rocky balance of roles; when Iverson was traded to the Nuggets in 2006 he was the league's second leading scorer behind his new teammate Anthony. But none of this matters when it comes to polygons. Iverson slashes, Smith spots up, Anthony isos and Martin and Camby patrol the paint. It's practically perfection.
19. 2008-09 Portland Trail Blazers (NBA 2K9)
Starting Five: Steve Blake, Brandon Roy, Travis Outlaw, LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden

This is one of the great could-have-been teams. In what counted as Greg Oden's rookie year following microfracture surgery in September of 2007, he was rated an 83 overall and should have been one half of a formidable frontline alongside sweet-shooting big man LaMarcus Aldridge (84 overall). Brandon Roy (88 overall) had the best season of his short career that year, and the roster is rounded out with solid role players (at least in video game terms) like Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw and Jerryd Bayless. You even have big men who can stretch the floor like Channing Frye and Raef LaFrentz. The real-life Blazers got bounced in the first round that season, but they were always fun to run with in 2K9.
18. 2004-05 Phoenix Suns (ESPN NBA Basketball)
Starting Five: Steve Nash, Leandro Barbosa, Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Amar'e Stoudemire

A quintessential video game team, combining the visionary playmaking of Steve Nash with the raw athleticism of Amar'e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, the shooting of Joe Johnson, and the blazing speed of Leandro Barbosa. The Seven Seconds or Less Suns might not have won a title, but they revolutionized basketball with their uptempo approach. Their practice of running a high pick-and-roll and spreading shooters out in the corner can be seen in many current teams' offensive sets. It's the stuff of video game dreams.
17. 2002-03 Sacramento Kings (NBA 2K3)
Starting Five: Mike Bibby, Doug Christie, Peja Stojakovic, Chris Webber, Vlade Divac

Before the Seven Seconds or Less Suns, there were the Sacramento Kings. They were an uptempo team, but the key to their fluid offense was not their guards, but Webber and Divac, who worked the high elbow like few other before or since. In the first several NBA 2K games, Webber was almost godlike, able to score, rebound and dish nearly at will. Bibby, Christie and Stojakovic could all shoot the lights out. It wasn't as easy to harness their game as it might have been with the later Suns, but it was more rewarding.
16. 2011-12 New York Knicks (NBA 2K12)
Starting Five: Jeremy Lin, J.R. Smith, Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler

This is one of those teams that works so much better in a video game than real life it's almost silly. Instead of struggling to make everyone happy and keep the floor spaced as the real world Knicks were forced to do, you can run pick-and-rolls with Lin and either Chandler or Stoudemire all day, then change it up by calling isolations for Carmelo or running J.R. Smith off screens. Shumpert can be a stopper on the perimeter and Steve Novak will knock down any open 3-pointer you give him. You could take online players who always picked the Thunder or Heat by surprise with this team.
15. 2003-04 Lakers (NBA 2K4)
Starting Five: Gary Payton, Kobe Bryant, Devean George, Karl Malone, Shaquille O'Neal

This might not have been the first superteam—the 1985-86 Boston Celtics featured three future Hall-of-Famers—but it was one of the most consciously designed ones. In the real world, they fell just short of glory, losing to the Detroit Pistons 4-1 in the NBA Finals. But in the digital realm, they were world destroyers, with Malone and Payton's skills hardly diminished by age. Speaking of age, this virtual powerhouse that turned out to be a playoff disappointment had the same average age of 32.75 as another Lakers superteam
14. 2012-13 Los Angeles Lakers (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard

About the only thing that wasn't disappointing about this year's Lakers was how they played in NBA 2K13. Freed from nagging injuries and confusion about exactly what kind of offense they were going to run, the Lakers blossomed on the digital hardwood. Throw a Nash-Howard pick-and-roll out one possession, then hit them with a Kobe isolation. The options were limitless when you didn't have to worry about egos or Achilles tendons.
13. 2004-05 Spurs (ESPN NBA 2K5)
Starting Five: Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Bruce Bowen, Tim Duncan, Rasho Nesterovic

Although several Spurs teams have won the title during the life of the NBA 2K series, this team gets the nod because 2005 was the year when Ginobili, Parker and Duncan really hit their stride. Duncan was 28, Ginobili was 27 and Parker was 22. Although Parker would continue to improve, Duncan and Ginobili were never better than they were this year. Throw in Robert Horry coming in off the bench to provide 3-pointers in the clutch and you have a team that might look low-key, but was a ton of fun to play with.
12. 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers (NBA 2K1)
Starting Five: Ron Harper, Kobe Bryant, Rick Fox, Horace Grant, Shaquille O'Neal

The 2000 Lakers might have given Kobe his first ring, but it was this 2001 version that truly began to show that the early years of the millenium belonged to the Lakers. The balance here was the key to making them so good in NBA 2K1. At 31, Fox was still a solid small forward and even at 35, Grant provided grit to go alongside O'Neal's dominance. Kobe was in his fourth year in the league and truly coming into his own while Shaq was in his prime at 28. 2K1's rudimentary online multiplayer meant you weren't schooling random people across the country, but when you got together in the living room back then, somebody was always picking the Lakers.
11. 1994-95 Orlando Magic (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Anfernee Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Donald Royal, Horace Grant, Shaquille O'Neal

All you really need to know about this team is the combo of Penny Hardaway at 23 and Shaq at 22. Hardaway might not be the fastest guard or the best shooter or the one with the best handles, but there's virtually no element of his game that is weak and Shaq is simply an unstoppable force down low. This was the team that made it to the Finals by taking advantage of a Bulls team that only had Jordan back for 17 games before the playoffs started. Once they got there, though, they ran into the buzzsaw of the Olajuwon-led Rockets.
10. 2011-12 Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA 2K12)
Starting Five: Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka, Kendrick Perkins

There are a lot of good reasons that Harden came off the bench for the Thunder last year and it's true that having his scoring available for the second unit is useful. But this is a video game, and running out this high octane starting lineup can put an opponent down before they even knew what hit them. Oklahoma City might have fallen to Miami in the Finals last season, but their unvarying pick-and-rolls and isolation sets are made for the player who loves taking it to the cup or shooting from long range.
9. 1970-71 Los Angeles Lakers (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, Keith Erickson, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain

Much like the '86 Celtics, the '71 Lakers are even better in the modern game where West and Goodrich's lights-out shooting can come to the fore. Their stellar 3-point ratings (87 for West and 88 for Goodrich) in NBA 2K13 are a bit of an anachronism, since the league didn't add the 3-point arc until 1979, but there's little doubt about their sniping abilities. When paired with the offensive and defensive dominance of Chamberlain down low, this Lakers team is an absolute juggernaut.
8. 2008-09 Boston Celtics (NBA 2K9)
Starting Five: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins

Funny to think we looked at the first edition of the Celtics' Big Three and thought they were old or over the hill back then. Even though they won the championship in 2008, they were were only truly dominant in NBA 2K9, where Garnett was a 99, Pierce a 92, Allen an 89, Rondo (still probably underrated) an 83 and Perkins a 75. Couple those starters with Tony Allen's defensive prowess off the bench and you have a team that could go toe-to-toe with the very best dynasties.
7. 2012-13 Miami Heat (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: : Mario Chalmers, Dwyane Wade, Shane Battier, LeBron James, Chris Bosh

The Heat have been a force to be reckoned with in NBA 2K ever since LeBron arrived on South Beach, but it's only with the move of James to PF and Bosh to C that they've realized their true potential. The real life Heat have made use of it with some fairly complex offensive and defensive schemes, but for gamers, all they need to worry about is getting James the ball in the high post and letting him work. Adding Ray Allen off the bench has given them another deadeye shooter to kick it to and Chris Andersen makes blocking shots fun. A complete team.
6. 1985-86 Celtics (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish

What's amazing about playing as this loaded Celtics squad in NBA 2K13 is how much better they are with a more modern approach emphasizing 3-pointers. In 1986, when the Celtics won the championship, they attempted 393 3-pointers, fourth in the league. For comparison, Chandler Parsons attempted 395 by himself this season. With Bird (90) and Ainge's (84) 3-point ratings, this team can k!ll you softly from outside or decimate you inside with McHale's wily post game.

5. 1995-96 Seattle Sonics (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Gary Payton, Hersey Hawkins, Detlef Schrempf, Shawn Kemp, Ervin Johnson

Do you like long-range shooting? Then this is the team for you. With Payton at 80, Schrempf at 82 and Hawkins at a dizzying 93 for 3-point shooting, this team is very nearly the equal of the '90-'91 Warriors from distance, but they also have Shawn Kemp's earthshaking dunks. Sadly, this version of the team is a year too late for the Sonics' classic emerald and white jerseys and have to settle for the pseudo-fast food logo they adopted from 1995–2002. Can't win them all.
4. 1990-91 Golden State Warriors (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Chris Mullin, Tom Tolbert, Alton Lister

You only have to look down the 3-Point Shooting ratings of this team to see why they're so good. Tim Hardaway is a 92; Mitch Richmond is an 87; Chris Mullin is an 85. Add to that the fact that Hardaway is one of the best ballhandlers in the game (99 Off-Hand Dribbling, 94 Handle) and a terrific thief (99 Steal) and you have a backcourt and wing player who can dominate the virtual court. Sure, center Alton Lister is best known for getting punked by Shawn Kemp, but he'll go up and get you the ball. Run TMC is video game nirvana.
3. 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Steve Kerr, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Luc Longley

It's tough to pick just one of Michael Jordan's Bulls teams from the '90s, but it's hard to argue with the one that won an NBA record 72 games. Playing with this classic team in NBA 2K13 is almost unfair for Jordan alone, but add Kerr's shooting, Pippen as a secondary scorer, Rodman's rebounding prowess, and Kukoc coming off the bench to provide points for the second unit and you've got a slice of video game basketball heaven.
2. Team USA 2012 (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Tyson Chandler

This stunning collection of basketball talent is second only to, well, you-know-who, but for current gamers raised on James, Bryant, et al, this might be the more deadly video game team, just because of familiarity. Still: their relative lack of size down low does hurt them in matchups against teams with two strong big men. But understand: Trying to face down this monster with anything less than the team next on this list is a fool's errand.
1. The Dream Team (NBA 2K13)
Starting Five: Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, David Robinson

What is there to say about this legendary team that hasn't already been said? Everywhere you turn there are scoring options and it doesn't stop with the starters. In the '92 Olympics, players like Stockton and Bird were hampered by injuries, but they aren't in NBA 2K13, making this team a virtual all-you-can-eat buffet of basketball deliciousness. Run the two-man game with Magic and Robinson. Or Pippen and Malone. Run pick-and-rolls with Jordan and Ewing all day. Send Bird off screens for spot-ups. It just doesn't stop. The best team in history is easily the best NBA 2K team of all-time as well.
Still bullsh*t.

if you talking about the 80's Lakers from 2k12 then hell yeah they are better than the Jordan Bulls teams. 2k 13 though with a noticably missing Kareem?? then hell no.

Complex should have also put the 76-77 76ers as one of the most chessiest teams in 2k12. Doctor J could do everything but knock down the three consistantly on that team. Doug Collins could penetrate, dish, and knock down the mid range as well as the three. Henry Bibby's automatic from three. George Mgginnis is unstoppable in the post. Steve Mix is an offenisive post scoring punch off the bench, while World B Free was a scoring god off the bench. Kobe's dad could drive to the basket. Harvey Catchings, and Darryl Dawkins were ball stoppers on defense with rebounds and blocks. Dawkins had a post game also, and could also put other post defenders on a poster. 76-77 76er's team was underrated as fu*k on 2k12. Almost every player on that team was good for something.

Whats the purpose of putting in legendary teams.. They need to just do regular teams from certain 2k' games..

Like what year when Walter McCarty played for the suns and they gave him a burner from 3 point land, and this n*gga stood 6'10, literally Durant before Durant came into the league.. Use to drop 50 with him on the norm. Walter fu*kin McCarty
