Players that caused NBA rule changes.

George Mikan:
3 second rule
lane widened from 6 feet to 12 feet
goaltending (NCAA and NBA)
honorable mention- 3-point line in the ABA (as an official), which was later transferred to the NBA

Wilt Chamberlain:
Shooters cannot cross the free throw line while during free throws (Wilt would throw it against the backboard for dunks)
lane widened from 12 feet to 16 feet
offensive interference/goaltending
ball cannot be inbounded over the backboard (Inbounders standing underneath the basket would routinely lob the ball over the backboard for Wilt)

Darryl Dawkins:
changed backboard material due to constant glass shattering dunks (well, just 2 but the commish had enough)

Shaq:
changed backboard support and stanchion design (brought down the backboard twice)
honorable mention- teams can no longer Hack-a-Shaq in the last 2 minutes of the game without consequences

Charles Barkley:
5 second rule (Also the Mark Jackson rule)- players have 5 seconds to make an offensive move (Chuck would back that enormous b00ty all day)

Reggie Miller:
The Leg Kick, players cannot kick legs out on shot attempts to draw fouls

Kevin Durant:
The Rip Through, famously used by Kobe in the 2010 NBA Finals, and also by Dwyane.

Allen Iverson:
Palming, dat crossover

Honorable mention to Lew Alcindor for instituting a no-dunk rule, but it was in the NCAA.

Questionable ones:

Karl Malone, I always thought it was because of this man that there is a time limit to shoot free throws, but I can't find any evidence.

Rasheed Wallace- The technical foul rule. 16 in the regular season = 1 game suspension, every additional 2 techs = 1 game. 7 techs for playoffs = 1 game, and every additional 2 techs = another game.
I think it's incredible how dominant Mikan was that they revised to rules in a failed attempt to bring down his domination, but I think its even more amazing that they changed those very rules again for Wilt, in another failed attempt to reduce dominance. Neither big men were hampered by the new rules. Chuck used his god-given a.ssets (heh) to back down taller players relentlessly; and Reggie and Durant used some cunning to draw fouls so often, they had to put a stop to it.

Any input or corrections are welcome, you are welcome to fill in my blanks or add to the list.
Edit:

Shaq: Zone Defense

Michael Jordan: Illegal Offense (clear out isolation on one side of the court)

Allen Iverson: Dress Code

LaMarcus Aldridge: rule that now allows late-game goaltending reviews

Trent Tucker: disallows any regular shot to be taken on the court if the ball is put into play with less than three-tenths of a second left on the game or shot clock

Derek Harper: hand checking

Dwyane Wade: jumping into defenders after pump fakes to draw shooting fouls.
Contract stuff:

Gilbert Arenas: Not rule changes to the game of basketball but changes to the CBA include the Gilbert Arenas rule and Bird Rights.

Derrick Rose: young players to collect maximum deals worth 30% of the salary cap on their second contract if they meet certain requirements. Upgraded from the previous 25%, idea came up by Chris Paul.

Larry Bird: The Bird Exception/Bird Rights- teams are permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players.

Allan Houston: The Amnesty Clause (although not the current Amnesty Clause).
Honorable Mentions:

Kevin Garnett: Garnett Rule - goaltending shots on dead plays; while not illegal, people may argue it affects the game by both being annoying, and not allowing players to practice their stroke or gain confidence during dead plays.

Len Bias: new no tolerance drug policy. The rule that got Birdman Andersen suspended for a year.

Rajon Rondo: Headbands must now be worn with the logo facing the right way.

Vince Carter: I remember something about earbuds being banned during warmups because of him.

Dwyane Wade: Band aids with names or identifications are banned.

Caron Butler: No straw chewing during games.

Barkley and Rodman used to be famous for calling timeouts in mid air, while they were falling out of bounds.... not sure if anybody specifically forced the rule change, that you had to have your feet set before calling a timeout, but remember them doing it a lot.....

I swear I saw a play in the first round of OKC vs Rockets where Sefolosha called a timeout in the air during the last seconds of the game.

Dwyane Wade has had 3 clothing/equipment items banned by the NBA

•In 2006 the NBA banned the compression tights he wore early in his career & in the 2006 Finals. Kobe
& LeBron were wearing them at the time too

•In 2009 the NBA banned his personalized Band-Aid's known as "Band-Wade's" he wore after getting cut underneath his eye

•In 2011 the NBA banned Wade's orange tinted Oakley goggles he was wearing for practices due to migraines. Wade had to wear clear lenses for a game vs. New York in MSG

I know i'm saying a lot of people do it today and learned it from watching jordan

wade was also doing the leg kick when they changed the rules but reggie was the main one who did it. Can't have it both ways...either list the guy who revolutionized it or list the guy who was doing when the league changed the rules...can't do one for one and one for the other
