Killer Mike Says "New White Rappers" Brought "Self-Pity" To Hip Hop

Killer Mike also explains why he has equal love and respect for Talib Kweli, Gunplay, Trinidad Jame$ and Ol' Dirty Bastard.

While speaking about White rappers and emotion in Hip Hop, k!ller Mike explained his take on the subject. Mike explained that he feels "White people brought self-pity" to the genre.

During an interview with The Combat Jack Show, Mike sat with El-P as the duo, Run The Jewels, and he explained his stance when asked about "White rappers tending to be more honest about their angst and their shortcomings." Mike disagreed and later explained why.

"I think what White people brought was self-pity," he shared. "Not you in that [talking to El-P] but a lot of the new White rappers just brought that. I'm sorry. It's no disrespect. Complaining about a parent and sh-t is cool but I'm from a community where mothafu-kas lost both of their parents to crack. Mothafu-kas didn't even know their... Like, my grandmother raised me. I never knew my mom and dad. So I feel that. And I think that, as a Black audience, we appreciated it because it was something different but that don't make you more in touch with your feelings than me."

He went on to add that suffering does not make one special.

"I'm not saying that experience isn't worthy. I'm not saying it isn't valuable. I'm just saying that it's not special because every human being experiences love, pain and letdown. Your thing is no more special. A lot of times, as Americans and in this country, we feel like our suffering makes us special. You're special because you're a human being. How you deal with your suffering can make you extraordinary. Are you going to use it for self-pity or are you going to use it to help others?"

He went on to add that he respects every emcee who stands behind any microphone.

"I love and respect Gunplay as much as I love and respect Talib Kweli. I love and respect Trinidad James the same way I loved and respected [Ol' Dirty Bastard]. [That's] because, for me, any artist, when you get on stage, no matter how many clothes you get on, when you get on stage and you got that mic, are butt-fu-king-nekkid."

I respect k!ller Mike a lot
I love his music
And he made a lot of sense
but putting every white rapper in the same bag is kind of ruining his point
That shows how narrow minded he is,
I agree on the most part, but label "white" rappers and put every single one of them in the same luggage is a no no for me

Like there weren't black rappers that are fake and lie to their teeth,
whats worse :
portraying a lie just to live off a personna while being black,
or telling something less impactful and less representative of the Hip hop community but nonetheless true?

I'll chose emotion (im not talking sensitive type necessarly here) passion and realness
beyond any fake rappers
White or black.

That being said and k!ller mike is still one of my underground fav no doubt.

EDIT : and tell me why Diggy simons is rapping about?
Like his parents aren't rich too?
And Childish Gambino?
Oh such a hood youth...

C'mon this isn't ALL about race

oh yes it was the whites that brought self pity.....not DMX, Drake, J. Cole, Ja Rule, Budden, Nas etc. Cause those rappers didnt rap about their personal pain and struggles right?

self pity? parents? the fu*k is he talking about?

go around talking like white rappers just rap about their parents, thats about as ignorant as saying all black rappers rap about their lack of parents;

im trying to figure out what rapper talks all time time about their parents????

Brother Ali?

Kno????

Macklemore????

Yelawolf??

Eminem??? sh*t he did, but now???

Mac MIller? hes whack as fu*k but all he rap about is partying?

Lil Wyte?

Sounds like k!ller Mike is using blatant prejudice. Hes making it sound like all rappers are rich spoiled brats who hate their mom and dads.

Guess he forgot there are 20x more poor white kids in this country then black folk

Read it yestarday & he has a very valid observation on this topic.

Eminem DID open a door for that "self-pity" rap. . . Most people that got into Em got into him because they didn't listen to HipHop in the first place. Yet the pity connected plenty which translated into huge sales.

Until black artists are able to mobilize their black audience to go out and support the culture they supposedly love so much, from a financial standpoint, it won't happen.

Simple as that
