Brittney Griner comes out as a lesbian
|Still basking in the glow of being the No. 1 overall pick in Monday’s WNBA Draft, former Baylor star Brittney Griner sat down for an interview with Sports Illustrated alongside fellow top picks Elena Delle Donne and Skylar Diggins. When the subject turned to s3xuality – and specifically, why more female athletes have come out as gay than male athletes – Griner spoke openly.
“I really couldn't give an answer on why. It’s just so different,” Griner said. “Being one that's out, it's just being who you are. Again, like I said, just be who you are. Don't worry about what other people are going to say because they're always going to say something. But if you're just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don't hide who you really are.”
Griner continued when asked if her celebrity status made it harder on her to come out.
“It really wasn't too difficult. I wouldn't say I was hiding or anything like that,” Griner said. “I've always been open about who I am and my s3xuality, so it wasn't hard at all. If I can show that I'm out and I'm fine and everything's OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way.”
Griner, who will kick off her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury in May, has been linked to the Dallas Mavericks after owner Mark Cuban said he'd be willing to give her a tryout with the team.
Earlier this month, Cuban told TMZ that he'd be honored to have a gay player on the Mavs.
"I've been saying the same thing for years. There will be somebody who comes out. It'll be a great moment for sports. I would be honored if he was on my team," Cuban said. "I think things have changed, significantly, in that the players would accept him. All professional sports have had their homophobic missteps along the way, it's a new era, a new generation and the player would be accepted. I think we are starting, at least on the edges, break down those barriers. This shouldn't be a big deal."
I think that its a shocker.......
never expected it
