Apr 17 - Gun control amendment fails in Senate

WASHINGTON — The Senate has rejected a bipartisan effort to expand federal background checks to more firearms buyers in a crucial showdown over gun control.

Wednesday’s vote was a jarring blow to the drive to curb firearms sparked by December’s massacre of children and staff at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. President Barack Obama made broadened background checks the centerpiece of his gun control proposals.

The roll call was also a victory for the National Rifle a.ssociation, which opposed the plan as an ineffective infringement on gun rights.

The proposal would have required background checks for all transactions at gun shows and online. Currently they must occur for sales handled by licensed gun dealers.

The system is designed to keep criminals and people with mental problems from getting guns.

fu*king retards in our govt. how could this hurt? yeah, maybe your're right and it wouldnt be that effective, but at least it might keep a few people that shouldnt have weapons from getting them. better than nothing.

people in here saying its a "win" doesn't make sense to me either. are you admitting that you shouldn't have guns but still want them?

I never understood this logic, by using that logic, we should have no laws. murders happen everyday, therefor we shouldn't have laws against them?

That's not the logic I'm using. If there were creating laws that made gun crimes punishment stronger, then that would actually be doing something. But what they are doing is making it harder to get guns legally when the overwhelming majority of criminals don't get guns legally. Do you see my point? This law would only affect the people who are already following the laws.
they do get guns legally, because you can buy guns without background checks lots of places. if criminals know a background check is required to make a purchase, they will then avoid making that purchase and have to find another way to get a gun. If background checks are universally required for all gun purchases they are going to have a hard time getting their hands on guns.

incorrect. the majority of recent massacres/mass shootings were caused by guns that were acquired legally..

It's not a conspiracy, anyone who looks at the situation can see they were trying to use Sandy Hook for this purpose. Chicago had 500 murders last year, why wasn't kids getting k!lled any issue then? Why wasn't it an issue when it was happening to poor black people in D.C., New Orleans, Philly, Detriot and L.A.?
They were using Sandy Hook as a reason for stricter gun laws. They didnt stage it to pass gun laws. Just like under Reagan, guns laws were passes when someone shot up an elementary school. I guess the Republican golden boy staged that one too huh? And this is America. When has anybody cared about poor or black people. Don't fool yourself kid

Link to their research and sources?

also notice how many k!llers had mental illnesses that were detected before the shootings. something that wouldve kept them from obtaining a gun legally under expanded gun control laws

honestly its 2013, i dont understand why this is still a debate in the US. are we THAT much behind the rest of the world?
