4. PEMDAS is the method, but the people getting 2 are forgetting that mutiplication/division and addition/subtraction are treated equally, so you work from left to right after doing 3x0. I had the easiest time in school doing Algebra, but when it came to Geometry...

1) You added brackets, which were not in the original equation. It changes the 2(1+2) to a single term, when it is not written as such. You're taking away a 6 % 2, when that should be done before 2(1+2). As I said, It is written in an ambiguous way, and someone may interpret the 6 as the numerator and the 2(1+2) as a single term in the denominator. However, we can't a.ssume that. The ONLY thing we can a.ssume is that a number next to parentheses is multiplication. So it's 6 % 2 x (1+2). The answer is 9. 2) Secondly, there's no reason to use the distributive property when you have no unknown variable to solve for. Distributive property is used to SIMPLIFY an equation, such as taking 2(x+2) and changing it to 2x + 4. We aren't solving for X, so there's no reason to bother with that when the ORDER OF OPERATIONS with the MATHEMATICS already provides us with the SIMPLEST method. And as you know, in math you are to use the simplest method. Proof? When x = 1; 2x + 4 and 2(3) both equal 6. LOL So to summarize again, the answer is 9, however a set of brackets or an additional x before the parenthesis would make things clearer. Simply go on YouTube or any of the million pages on this exact question, and you will see every authority says what I just said. Last edited by Magnificent Phoenix; 04052013 at 04:19 AM..

You're making things far more difficult than they need to be. It's the order of operations again. Parentheses first, 1+2=3. Since you're going from left to right you do the division first. There's no need to distribute. That's how you get 9.

You don't have to multiply before you divide. They are equal in the order of operations, so you go left to right. That's the great thing about math. It's not open for interpretation. You're either right or not.

People are really arguing the answer isn't 4?
Smarten up ninjas!!! And why are people making parenthesis when there are none. Parenthesis then exponents then multiplication/division and lastly addition/subtraction. That's like middle school math fam. Y'all need to log off and hit them books!!!
