but 7+4 and 7 + l4l is the same and you get different answers because the standard calculator doesnt do order of operations on its own Last edited by bbrossy313; 04042013 at 09:32 PM..

Its funny how even after pages of people going through this equation people still think its 1

Someone here has a brain. how they hell they expect a regular calculator to use pemdas. That's some sh*t I realized couldn't be done when I was 12 probably younger.

Pretty sure some of these people are the same people that claim to have gone to college and have great jobs in other threads

n*ggas who are getting 1, u gotta do the 3 x 0 first n*gga
n*ggas who are getting 2, ur doing PEMDAS wrong. eventhough ur goin in order subtraction and addition still follow the order of the problem, same with multiplication and division

Surprised I got it right (4) on the first run. I usually pluck math problems ALL THE WAY up.

Funniest thread ever! I actually teach math and this is a 5th/6th grade problem. You learn the order of operations way before algebra. However I have algebra students that will still screw this up.
There isn't anything wrong with how the question is written either, if they put parenthesis in the problem more people would get it right, but that is a true testament of how many people don't know how to apply the order of operations. The problem is people use things like Please Excuse My dear Aunt Sally to teach the order of operations, that why we have people who think you have to add before you subtract and multiply before you divide. I teach the order of operations differently 1) grouping 2) exponents 3) division/multiplication left to right 4)subtraction/addition left to right And you can use a calculator to solve this problem. Most scientific calculators know the order of operations and will solve the problem in the correct order. Especially calculators that allow you to enter the entire problem in one step (ie: graphng calculators or Texas Instruments TI 30x and above) Now if you have one of those cheap calculator without any memory that only allows you to enter one step at a time, you will probably get the wrong answer.

7 4 + (3 x 0) + 1 =
7 (4 + 0) + 1 = 7(4+1) = 75 = 2 dont forget u do all adding before any subtraction i only put the parenthesis (not sure if i spelled that right) around what step im on not that they are actually there in the problem but u do in this u go p.e.m.d.a.s and aint no p.e. skip to m do the lil multi then go to addition from left to right in this problem it doesnt matter but others it might but then u do subtraction last .... the only correct answer is 2 I think lol Last edited by jy'liyahpops; 04042013 at 11:19 PM..
