NBA Players Who Suffered a Torn ACL and Recovered Better Than Ever

Al Harrington tore his ACL as a member of the Indiana Pacers in 2002 missing the final 38 games of the season. The following season he was the only Pacer to play in all 82 games that year.

David West suffered a torn ACL in Utah and was taken off the court in a wheelchair. (March 25, 2011)
He returned on 12/26/2011 playing 66 games the following season.
"I wanted to beat this thing," said West. "I wasn't going to let anything get the best of me. Tearing my ACL was not going to slow me down. I feel great now."

It's been 11 years since Jamal Crawford tore his ACL, and not one of those seasons was wasted due to the injury.
"After surgery, you start rehab and start to see some progressions. You get a little more confident as it goes along. And then the last stage is the mental part: 'Can I still do that move? Can I still do that cut?' The actual leg you injure ends up being stronger than the leg that's not injured. But you don't believe that at first. You're scared. You doubt."

While playing in Boston, Perkins tore his ACL prior to Game 7 in the 2010 playoffs.
To everyone's surprise, the big man made his return only six months after surgery.

Rose is gonna be fine. I think it's a combination of him just having a child along with the season being almost over that's preventing him from coming back. He ain't no Jamal Crawford or Perkins...he's gotta be the face of the Bulls for the several years and knowing Rose, he ain't finna leave. He knows this and is taking his time.

The only person on that list you can compare to rose is j Crawford. They both cut and use their first step/explosive power a lot. West, Perkins, Harrington...they are for the most part guys that don't use athletic ability like that. Name a player who came back from a torn acl that was as an explosive guard like rose. Best I can think of is shump and he's getting better but clearly not the same

I tore my acl when I jumped off a bridge ramp that was about 15-16 feet high back in 08 and I could barely run 10 months later.

But I'm not a world class athlete, i could only imagine what rose going through cause even 2 years later i was still shook to jump or run.

I tore mine about 8 months ago and I've been playing on it. Definitely not the same player I was before injury but it gets better everytime I go out there. Most of it really is mental as the graft has been as strong as its going to be since about 4 months after the surgery.

Rose sitting out for the year isn't necessarily a bad thing but he is still going to go through the pains that Rubio/Shumpert went through when they first came back this year.

I personally think that he should have been playing in the D-League as soon as he was medically cleared regardless of whether he planned on playing this season or not.

I tore my MCL years back and it's still bad on some (usualy cold) days. Can't even stretch out that leg most the times. My mind has never gotten over it cos it was so painful (but I never got medical help cos I need surgery/have no insurance so it never healed properly I think).

Rose is a top athlete and the face of a franchise and brands, it's best not to rush. He has the best medical help though.. But why bother coming back if your team is doing "enough" its not your team this year.

I think rose depends more on his knees than thos guys. His game is all about explosion and sudden change of direction but that's just my opinion

I really think with 21st century medical technology ACL injuries no longer have as much of a longterm effect as they once did. Microfractures are much worse

There's still the mental part, especially if it pops on your own movement. Then anytime you try and walk right after and your knee buckles...you start to doubt your knee even after it heals. Some people get over it, others don't. I still can't play football without a brace, and even then I don't carry a pile or f!ght for extra yards anymore.
