(AP) -- LeBron James and the Miami Heat are about to play another game in Cleveland.

Yawn.

That's what a 23-game winning streak will do for a team.

It mutes even the LeBron-Goes-Home-Again hype.

Someday the Heat will lose another basketball game. Maybe even Wednesday night, when the reigning NBA champions drop by James' old neighborhood to take on James' old team, which happens to be decimated by injuries right now.

Still, could happen. Almost did in Boston on Monday night, save for James' game-winning jumper in the final seconds after Miami rallied from 17- and 13-point deficits to squeak past the Celtics 105-103.

But given how they wrapped up their latest "W" and what lies ahead, it may no longer be farfetched to think that the record of 33 straight victories set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers is within the Heat's grasp.

"It means a lot," James said after the Boston game. "I know the history of the game. To be sitting in second place right now ... for us to be there and doing it in the way we want to do it, it means a lot."

It also means a lot that Miami (52-14) won't be visiting many playoff-bound teams any time soon. Five of their next six games are against teams with the worst records this season, starting with Cleveland (22-45).

While it will surely be emotional -- after all, James is coming home, again -- Miami would have to simply lay an egg to lose on Wednesday. The Cavs are incredibly banged up and out of the playoff race. Kyrie Irving is out, Anderson Varejao's season is over and on Tuesday, Cleveland revealed that guard Dion Waiters may need surgery to repair a problem in his left knee.

Yes, the Cavaliers nearly knocked off the Heat in Miami on Feb. 24, but Waiters and Irving combined for 43 points in that upset bid. They'll combine for zero on Wednesday for Cleveland, which has lost three straight and seven of nine.

Miami won last month's matchup 109-105 and also came away with a 110-108 victory in the first meeting of the season Nov. 24. The Heat are 8-1 against the Cavaliers since James bolted for South Beach following the 2009-10 season, with the reigning league MVP averaging 26.4 points, 6.9 a.ssists, 6.2 rebounds and shooting 51.2 percent -- similar numbers to what he's put up this season.

"I think you can give the (MVP) trophy to him right now," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "He's the best player in the league right now, and he's playing like it."

Despite his team's injury situation, Scott says Cleveland is confident heading into this matchup, especially since its two losses in the series this season have come by a total of six points.

"Anything can happen," Scott said. "Just like boxers. James Buster Douglas against Mike Tyson. Nobody in the world thought it would happen. ... We have to play probably our best game of the season because they're playing at a different level than everybody else.

"I'm sure from their standpoint, they're on a high. When you're playing that well, you have to have some luck in there during that streak. But you almost get to the point you feel you're invincible, that you can't lose."

This is the end of a five-game trip for the Heat, who return home to face Detroit (23-46) on Friday and NBA-worst Charlotte (15-52) on Sunday before starting another four-game stretch away from home.

"It's a special opportunity that we have with this group and you don't want to take it for granted," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You want to treat every day as a special opportunity to be with this group, to share these moments together, but more importantly to take a step closer to going after our goal and every day that we improve puts us in a better position in a quest where nothing is guaranteed for anybody."

Ask Ira

Q: How many more productive years does Ray Allen have, as to me he looks as good as he's looked in years? -- Brian, Fort Lauderdale.

A: While Ray bristled in Boston at playing as a reserve, it clearly is a move that could allow him to extend his career, particularly if he accepts his role as a shooting specialist. Ray has an opt-out after this season, but it would be difficult to envision him maximizing his skill set -- and extending his career -- to the degree that he could with the Heat. In this type of role, I could see him being effective for at least another couple of seasons. And while he didn't have the best shooting night Monday in Boston, he did show he could still be active, with his five rebounds

Q: Why have the Heat not amnestied Mike Miller yet? He may be healthy, but he's not playing and he's a defensive liability? -- Chet.

A: Because the amnesty window is a one-week period in July. It will happen this summer (image), barring another Game 5 Finals-type moment (and perhaps even then). Until then, Mike is more than glad to sell you energy drinks, and perhaps even provide a rubber band to keep your hair in place.

Q: Do you think Norris Cole's spot in the rotation is safe? With Wade and Lebron capable of playing more minutes in the playoffs, a backup point guard may not really be necessary. A guard who over-dribbles and who isn't a real 3-point threat probably is not the best fit with the Big 3. -- Adrian

A: My sense is the Heat want to make it work with Cole, that they like the bench dynamic the current second unit has provided. But that second unit also is playing to help rest the starters, which won't be as much of a priority in the playoffs, when there will be gaps between games. To a degree, Cole and Chris Andersen might be in the final stages of a playoff audition at the moment, since we know Shane Battier, Ray Allen and the current starters (perhaps with the exception of Udonis Haslem) will be in the playoff rotation.
Cheer or jeer? LeBron re-visits Cleveland

Over the past week, we've seen Dwight Howard booed in Orlando, Carmelo Anthony jeered in Denver, Raymond Felton derided in Portland. All as expected. In the NBA, you can't go home again. LeBron James, of course, knows that as well as anyone, based on the vitriol he endured in his first game back in Cleveland on Dec. 2, 2010 after his July 2010 Big Three departure to the Miami Heat from the Cavaliers.Yet last season, when James made his third return, in the Heat's only visit to Quicken Loans Arena during the lockout-shortened schedule, the Akron native curiously said of possibly one day playing again for his close-to-hometown team, "I think it would be great. It would be fun to play in front of these fans again. . . . I don't rule that out in any sense. If I decide to come back, hopefully the fans will accept me."

Wednesday night, we'll see, when the Heat make the first of two appearances this season in Cleveland. Much has changed since that Dec. 2010 antipathy. Foremost, with each passing day, James' 2014 opt-out draws closer. Plus, in the offseason, he moved from the powerful CAA agency that helped broker the Heat's Big Three revival to an agency opened by longtime friend Rich Paul, Cleveland-based Rich Paul. So what might Wednesday be like: Continued rage over a franchise devastated by "The Decision"? Or an embrace of what might one day be again?

For that we went to the sources, namely Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Terry Pluto and Cleveland ESPN Radio host Kenny Roda. "Look," Pluto said this past week in a phone interview, "he's not going to get a standing ovation from anyone. But I think some people will be quiet or sort of warmly applauding. Of course, you always hear the nutcases, the loudest. But it won't be anything like the hostile thing the first time around." Roda, also interviewed by phone this past week, largely agreed.

"It will not be like it was when the first time he came back, which was just pure hatred," he said. "With the potential of LeBron opting out of his contract in 2014 and him possibly coming back, I expect there to be a mixture of boos from the people who no matter what say, 'I don't want him back,' but there are others who I think have moved on and realized how good he is and that if he were added to this team as a free agent, he could maybe finish what he originally started."

That, of course, leads to the question of where those expectations stand, how reasonable they are about a return ticket from South Florida to Northeast Ohio.

"I'm actually trying to temper it," Pluto said, "just because, I want to know: Who had a clue, a year and a half before free agency, the last time? While some thought he would leave, who knew he'd go to Miami? "And the last thing the franchise or the fans can do is sit there with your breath held and your fingers cross and your eyes closed chanting LeBron's name." For Roda, it means having to temper the volatility that is talk radio. "There are a lot people who think it's a very good possibility and we have to remind them that the Cavs will not be the only team, if he does opt out, that will be going after him," he said. "But there's also a good chance that he doesn't return here to Cleveland, so the Cavaliers had better have a Plan B. Because the last time they didn't have a Plan B and they're still trying to dig out of it." This past week, the message to Dwight, Carmelo and even Raymond Felton was clear, "Good riddance!" But Wednesday in Cleveland? "I expect it to be a mixture of some boos," Roda said, "but more applause." Yet another case of LeBron being able to change the game
