I saw the episode that this snippet is from and it's exactly why I went back and watched every episode of this show. It was one of the best shows of 2012 in my opinion.

Nah... he said some BS. America was the greatest country in the world because when where the deciding factor in WW II and we were still great years after because of that.

The writers tried to pull from nostalgia... sh*t aint work.

Dude said something about "not puffing out our chest" but during our time as the "greatest" we felt it right to "talk light and carry a big stick" so yeah... this is BS

I was with him until the part about "we used to be." No we didn't. Ask Black people, ask Chinese people, ask the fu*king Native Americans about how great America used to be. Ask the women that couldn't vote, as the Japanese Americans that were rounded up and put in internment camps.

Maybe someone from those groups can attest to when America was so great. smh

I wrote about this on my blog about that very clip.

The above link goes to the whole thing with images/videos embedded. Below is a snippet.

On the premiere episode of the HBO series "The Newsroom" Jeff Daniels character goes off on a college student asking a question of the people on the panel about why America is #1 in the world. This is one of those questions that beg for a jingoistic nationalistic response and if you don't give the response that is looked for (that it's awesome because we're all free and whatnot) then you're an America Hater and probably a Socialist.

The thing is though, the only way you can say that we are number one among the world is if you have a severe misunderstanding of the realities of this country and our place in the world. And that's not a "hater" comment, that's just plain common sense.

There's all this talk about how free this country is. We have freedom to do what we want. At least that's what we're told. However I'm not sure of what these freedoms that we allegedly have. And I'm not a conspiracy nut, I don't listen to Alex Jones or Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh or any of those nutjobs. And I'm definitely not a Ron Paul fan either.

However if you really look at the situation that we face you'll realize that our "freedoms" that supposedly incite terrorists to want to attack us, are pretty thin. We don't really have any sense of privacy anymore. Not since 9/11 that's for damn sure, and probably to a smaller degree before then.

We have warrentless wiretaps by the NSA, we have police beating protestors and spraying them in the face with pepper spray for daring to speak up in shows of protest. You have groups in Florida that are jailed for trying to feed the homeless population.

You have police shooting and k!lling unarmed citizens (mostly minorities), A man was detained by police because he told then Vice-President d!ck Cheney that he disagreed with his policies and "touched" the VP, and our current President has indefinitely detained Private Bradley Manning for allegedly blowing the whistle on atrocities committed by our troops. The very same President, mind you, that campaigned by saying that he would defend whistleblowers.

The question that the girl asked him is why IS America the greatest country....present tense not past. So he would be correct, we are no longer the greatest country and haven't been for a while.

It's one of those speeches that Aaron Sorkin is great at writing, yet doesn't necessarily hold up. I mean, it's written from the perspective of a priviliged white guy. So to HIM, yeah...this country used to be awesome. It wasn't him being denied civil rights, or arrested for no reason, or had your civil liberties trampled, or being beaten and stomped out for daring to speak up, or just be denied your place as an equal citizen.

It reeks of white male privilige, but it's written very well, and it's delivered very well so it captivates people and makes them forget how full of sh*t it is.
