"American Horror Story: Asylum" is about to come to a nail-biting end. While some showrunners would rest on their laurels, Ryan Murphy is diving into his plan for Season 3 before the final episode even airs. At a recent press event, the creator of "Nip/Tuck," "Glee," and "T he New Normal " talked about what fans can expect from the next installment of "AHS."

1. Jessica Lange will return
Murphy confirmed that his Emmy Award-winning star, Jessica Lange, will return for Season 3. After playing the creepy neighbor Constance Langdon and the troubled nun Sister Jude, he's promises to create another unique character for the upcoming installment.
Murphy explained how he got the legendary star to sign-up yet again: "I did everything she asked, which was the location, and I also told her that she will have complete hair, make-up, and the best designer gowns ever. She said, 'Please don't put me in a wimple again.' So she's going to play a really glamor cat lady in Season 3."

2. Sarah Paulson will be back
Although Sarah Paulson is committed to come back for another season, Murphy wouldn't reveal anything about her role just yet. And he admitted that even Paulson doesn't know who she'll be playing.

3. Evan Peters has signed on, too
In "death House," Evan Peters took on the role of the emotionally troubled teen murderer Tate Langdon. He agreed to play Kit Walker in "Asylum" after Murphy promised that he'd play a less weepy and more grounded soul. As for what's to come for Peters, Murphy laughed, "Next year he'll probably go back to a sobbing psychopath."

4. Season 3 will have a lighter tone
Murphy conceded that "Asylum" was a much darker relentless a.ssault on the audience that "murder House" had been. He plans to ease up a bit when the show comes back. The new husband and father attributes the change in tone to his own personality shift: "As a person right now I do feel lighter and maybe wanting to embrace something a little bit more fun."
5. There'll be an icon with a feminine touch
Murphy shocked TV viewers of "murder House" with Rubber Man, who seemed tame in comparison to "Asylum's" Bloody Face. The show runner confirmed that there will be a new figurehead in Season 3, teasing, "We do have a great icon, and it's a woman."

6. Look for star-crossed lovers
The 47-year-old showrunner plans to explore the concept of star-crossed lovers. But he said that doesn't mean the storyline will instantly go to young actors like Peters. He noted, "Norma Shearer did 'Romeo and Juliet' when she was 42. So it could go either way. It could be Jessica Lange."

7. But not for aliens
There will not, however, be any more visitors from outer space. Although he liked the plot point in Season 2, Murphy conceded that it was polarizing to the audience, and he won't be reintroducing aliens in the next installment.

8. There could be a dance number
"Asylum's" most unexpected moment came when Sister Jude and the inmates broke into their own version of "The Name Game." And there could be more singing and dancing in Season 3 now that Lange is "an iTunes hit," as Murphy called her.

9. There'll be old faces behind the camera
Murphy confirmed that director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon will return in an increased capacity as a producer who will oversee the visual style of the show and helm roughly every third episode. The show's production designer, costumer, and director of photography will also return.

10. The format will remain the same
As unusual as the mini-series format is, Murphy said he'll stick with it. The story will unfold in three cities, in different time periods and, as he remarked, "It has a beginning, middle, and an end. It's very novelistic."

James Cromwell was arrested Thursday morning at the University of Wisconsin where the American Horror Story: Asylum star protested over claims that the school tortures cats, TMZ.com reports.

Cromwell, as well as PETA spokesman Jeremy Beckham, disrupted a UW System Board of Regents meeting, causing a disturbance as they shouted and held up signs that showed a cat that allegedly came from the UW-Madison lab with metal implanted in its head. The school denies PETA's accusations that 30 cats a year have been starved, deafened and decapitated for brain research.

Shortly after, police dragged out Beckham, while Cromwell was escorted out in handcuffs. A UW spokesperson said both were arrested and expected to be charged with disorderly conduct.

"Today's events are just another attempt by outside activists to draw attention to the cause," the director of the UW-Madison Research Animal Resources Center said in a statement. "They have attacked and distorted this research — which has very real benefits for people who are deaf — from every angle imaginable. Exhaustive independent investigation by the USDA, which regulates the use of animals in research, concluded that PETA's allegations are baseless."

American Horror Story is ratcheting up the Misery in Season 3.

Oscar winner Kathy Bates is nearing a deal to join FX’s hit spookfest as a nemesis to Jessica Lange, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Bates will play the best friend of Lange’s new character, who turns into her enemy.

Details on Horror Story‘s third season remain scarce, but series cocreator Ryan Murphy previously confirmed that Lange will play a “glamour cat leading lady,” in stark contrast to her gloomy Asylum wardrobe. Ryan also teased that the new season will be “more historical in nature” and take place in modern day. But just like past seasons, we will see different “time periods” and “there [will] also be different cities.”

Horror Story vets reuniting with Lange in Season 3 include Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga and Bates’ former Six Feet Under co-star Frances Conroy.

Bates is coming off a two-season run on NBC’s Harry’s Law.

Thoughts? Does the idea of a Lange-Bates showdown make your spine tingle? Got any new theories about the setting and premise of Season 3? Hit the comments!

Big chills are coming to the Big Easy.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy revealed Friday evening on the final night of PaleyFest 2013 that the third installment of the FX frightfest would be subtitled Coven.

RELATED | American Horror Story Season 3: Ryan Murphy Teases Kathy Bates’ Turn as a ‘Bad, Bad Woman!’

He also confirmed that which was leaked last week, that the new season will film, in part, in New Orleans.

And while it’s obvious that witches figure into AHS: Coven, Murphy indicated that the show will once again conjure up a melange of scary themes. “It’s about a lot of things,” he said.

Turning to its genesis, he explained, “It’s a really cool story that we’ve been talking about for a couple of years actually, and this seemed the year to do it.”

As for the setting, Murphy reiterated that the narrative will take place in multiple cities, and that this marks the first year the show will go on the road and shoot on location. (The Harmon House and asylum interiors, he noted, were sets on a studio.)

When approaching Season 3, Murphy said, “The fun thing is researching what are the really haunted places in America, and we have a couple doozy locales.”

Asked about her role in Coven — which had previously been summed up as a “glamour cat” — threepeat cast member Jessica Lange said, “I don’t know what a ‘glamour cat’ is, but I am excited.”

Other returning players include Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy and Taissa Farmiga, while Kathy Bates is the “new kid” on the block, playing what Murphy has called “a bad, bad woman,” someone “five times worse than [her] Misery character — which is why she liked it.”

Bates joined the PaleyFest panel toward the end, saying that she won’t have a bead on her character “until I’ve gotten in and walked around in her shoes yet, but I’m awfully excited.”

“I wanted to see a lot of scenes of Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates going at it,” Murphy said of Horror Story‘s latest great casting get, “so that’s what you’re going to see.”

These days, our knowledge of celebrities too often originates with paparazzi images and snarky quotes by anonymous "insiders." After a while, it's easy to forget that stars are real people. That's why HuffPost Celebrity decided to launch its all-new #nofilter quick-fire question and answer series. Because how well do you know someone until they've shared their guiltiest pleasures?

Zachary Quinto is everywhere at the moment. Not only did he campaign for President Obama in last year's election, but he played a serial k!ller in FX's spooky TV series "American Horror Story: Asylum" and is set to return to the big screen as Spock in "Star Trek Into Darkness" on May 17. HuffPost Celebrity caught up with Quinto at Manhattan Magazine's Men's Issue party at the Dream Downtown in NYC on April 9, where he filled us in on what's in his ear buds these days and if he's coming back for the highly anticipated third season of "American Horror Story." (Gosh, we hope so).

What's always on your DVR?
Well I don't have a home right now so I don't have a DVR. [laughs] Unfortunately, I'm living out of my suitcase. But "Veep," "Girls" ... very HBO-centric as you can tell ... "Newsroom" and "House of Cards."

What's on your nightstand?
My jam box and usually a bottle of sparkling water.

What's your guilty pleasure?
I don't know, it could be anything. Um, the High Line ... I don't know! [laughs]

When do you lose your temper?
When people aren't smart.

Flight or invisibility?
Invisibility.

Whom or what have you been jealous of lately?
I try not to really cultivate jealousy.

What's the last song you downloaded?
I just downloaded the new Shins album, which I've been listening to and enjoying very much.

If you could be anything aside from an actor, what would you be?
A spirit.

And please tells us -- are you in the third season of "American Horror Story"?
I don't know anything! I have had no conversations with anybody about it, so we'll see.

All signs point to American Horror Story season 3 being its best yet. This may be difficult after the aliens, Santa Claus spree k!llers, and other general madness of season 2′s storyline, but a glance at American Horror Story: Coven‘s growing cast list indicates that showrunner Ryan Murphy has ambitious plans indeed.

Say what you will about Murphy, but he does have a knack for recruiting top-flight talent. Having already pulled Kathy Bates (Midnight in Paris) in for the new season, American Horror Story: Coven has now signed Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe, star of 2009′s Precious.

Sidibe was announced via Murphy’s Twitter account and she will join a confirmed cast that includes Bates and a returning Jessica Lange (The Vow).

Overwhelmingly known for her Oscar-nominated role in Precious, Sidibe has spent the past few years in smaller parts. She made appearances in Tower Heist and Seven Psychopaths, and has a recurring role in Showtime’s The Big C.

Little is known about American Horror Story: Coven‘s storyline other than it will (obviously) involve witches. Murphy has dropped plenty of nebulous hints during interviews and convention appearances, indicating that the central conflict will be between Bates and Lange’s characters. The new season will, appropriately enough, be decidedly woman-centric – going so far as to (perhaps) feature a female k!ller/creature in the same tradition of The Rubber Man and Bloody Face.

Precious Gabourey Sidibe

The exact role Sidibe will play is unclear at this point. If the season does indeed revolve around a coven (or covens) of witches, it’s only logical that she will play one of their members. Given that Sidibe has yet to play any role that’s remotely sinister, one has to wonder whether American Horror Story‘s circle of witches will be (at least initially) more benign than the dark enchanters of folk legend.

Then again, this could be casting against type. Given how inextricably Sidibe is linked to the meek, beaten-down image of Precious, it would be quite the surprise if Murphy is recruiting her as a full-on villain. After all, American Horror Story has a habit of twisting almost every character into a grotesque mirror. Will Coven show us a whole new side of Sidibe’s talents?

They join the recently announced Gabourey Sidibe in the witch-themed installment of the FX anthology.

Ryan Murphy continues to lure a top-name cast to FX anthology American Horror Story.

The showrunner took to his Twitter feed early Sunday to announce that Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone would be joining the cast of the witch-themed third cycle, dubbed American Horror Story: Coven.

PHOTOS: 'American Horror Story': The Spookiest Set on TV

"Two legends are joining the cast of American Horror Story: Coven -- Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and Tony winner Patti LuPone!" he wrote.

Details are again being kept under wraps on who just everyone would be playing.

Singer-actress LuPone won Tony Awards for her role as Eva Peron in 1979's Evita and as Mama Rose in 2008's Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Her TV credits include episodes of Army Wives, 30 Rock and Frasier, the latter of which earned her a guest actress in a comedy Emmy nomination.

Bassett, meanwhile, fielded multiple broadcast pilot offers this past season. Her small-screen credits include ER, Alias and her Emmy nominated title role in The Rosa Parks Story; her feature film résumé is lined with Green Lantern, Olympus Has Fallen and 1993's What's Love Got to Do With It. She earned an Oscar nomination for actress in a leading role and a Golden Globe win for her work as Tina Turner in the latter.

PHOTOS: Unmasking Rubber Man: Behind the Scenes of 'American Horror Story'

The duo joins recently announced Gabourey Sidibe, Kathy Bates and returning players Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy and Lily Rabein Coven, which will bow in October.

While little is known about season three of the witch-themed American Horror Story: Coven, producers said at PaleyFest in March the series would again search for haunted places in America. Murphy previously told The Hollywood Reporter that next year would feature three characters playing real people, including Bates.

"It's a really cool story that we've been talking for a couple years, and this seemed to be the year to do it," he said, noting the series will shoot in multiple locations, one of which is New Orleans -- the first time the series has exited its soundstage filming location.

LuPone is repped by Innovative; Bassett is with Gersh, Lighthouse Entertainment and Fox Rothschild.

American Horror Story: Coven hereby overfloweth, with the addition of Alexandra Breckenridge to its bewitching ensemble.

Series boss Ryan Murphy announced the casting Friday morning on Twitter.

Breckenridge of course was part of FX’s original Horror Story, playing the younger, um, more libidinal alter ego of Frances Conroy’s housekeeper Moira. She joins a Coven cast that includes fellow Horror Story alumni Jessica Lange, Denis O’Hare, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga, as well as new blood Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone and Gabourey Sidibe.

Details on Breckenridge’s role were not immediately available, though that and other storyline information is bound to be conjured up when Horror Story: Coven holds court this afternoon at the Television Critics a.ssoc. press tour in Beverly Hills.
