MTV2 brings back episodes of Martin, sparking interest again in Tommy’s secret profession.

Many who grew up in the 90s era will probably name Martin Lawrence’s sitcom, Martin, as one of their favorite shows. Comedy, original writing, and not to mention memorable characters was what made up Martin. And it was the most popular show on the Fox network where it aired for five seasons from 1992-1997.

The chemistry between Martin and Gina was one written in urban fairy tales if there were many, which was why the show did so well.

There were many recurring themes in the show such as Martin and Pam going head to head with daggered disses and Martin constantly throwing people out of his apartment, but one of the themes that stood out the most involved character Tommy Strawn played by Thomas Ford.

For five seasons and even till now, we still do not know what he did for a living. So we’ve compiled a list of possible jobs Tommy may have had, jobs that had reason to be kept a secret.

A Street Pharmacist

This would be the first guess for many as there is a reason to keep this type of “profession” quiet; however, the signs were all there. Tommy always managed to dress debonair and he carried around a pager, which in the 90’s was believed to only be sported by doctors and…well, street pharmacists. Also, in one of the episodes, Tommy pulled out a wad of cash to pay for pizza. Martin initially thought that Tommy was an exotic dancer but that was later proven to be false. But the wad of cash was never explained.

A Phone s3x Operator

Ok, so this is just what we wish it was. Tommy was considered the catch out of the group and had some attractive qualities including a distinctive voice. There were no signs throughout the series that would have given us a clue that he was a phone s3x operator, but the thought of Tommy keeping lonely women company at night via phone is much better than pulling our hair out trying to figure out what it is that he did.

A Secret Agent

Surely, as a Secret Agent one cannot reveal their true identities, or so we’d like to believe. And using our colorful imaginations, we believe that Tommy felt the need to protect his friends by keeping his profession of investigating the bad guys of Detroit and beyond to himself. He didn’t seem to ever have any set hours when it came to work; it was as if he was always on-call, but was always available when the crew was available. And Martin did say that when he picked Tommy up from work once, he was standing in front of a big white building, no signs or windows.

A Male Escort

Again, perhaps this is just what we wish it was. We have to call attention to Tommy’s eye for style, his supply of cash, and of course again his beeper. In the same episode where it was revealed that he was modeling for a charity and was not an exotic dancer, during the final scene when Pam tried to get him to tell her what he did for a living, he stormed out of her place saying that he was beeped for work. This was late at night.

A Trust Fund Baby

This isn’t a job at all but everybody might have been right about Tommy all along. When Tommy is asked about his job, he often said that he worked a "regular 9-5 job" just like the rest of them. But what exactly is a regular 9-5 job? Yes, the time schedule for most jobs is the normal 9-5, but the positions of these jobs vary and there is no such thing as a regular job without a job title. Perhaps Tommy considers it to just be regular because he’s never held one. And maybe he never held one because he never needed to. Who knows, Tommy could have come from a very wealthy family that set up an empire that would allow him to never have to sit behind a desk. His access to cash and great clothing might be the workings of having a well fed bank account courtesy of mommy and daddy.

Whatever Tommy did, the man sure proved that he could keep a secret as he’s been keeping it for almost 19 years now. But we love it and that is one of the reasons why Martin was such a loved show.

You can relive the laughs every weekday when episodes from the series air from 9am-noon on MTV2. And follow the show on twitter @MartinOnMTV2.

-Of course he would say it's nothing illegal. He didn't want to blow his cover.

-That building with no windows was the trap house.

-We all know what the pager was for.

-Aquanette used to bag up for him.

-He probably figured that Cole wasn't built for that life and changed his mind about getting him hired.

-He wears suits to appear as a legit businessman.
