VIP Scoop: FSU visiting 'Bama commit today

Now that the Dead Period has come to an end, the Florida State coaching staff is hitting the recruiting trail in force this week.

Four-star defensive tackle Raekwon Davis has informed Noles247 that he expects Florida State defensive coordinator Charles Kelly and recruiting coordinator Tim Brewster to see him today in Meridian, Mississippi. Jones has been committed to Alabama since August, but he took an unofficial visit to FSU during the season and has an official visit to FSU scheduled for January 22nd.

The Seminoles coaching staff will have some work to do to flip Davis with Alabama coming off of a National Championship. However, Brewster and the staff have remained in close contact with Davis for much of the fall and winter.

Schiano makes early morning visit with top Ohio State DB target

Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola defensive back Carlos Becker landed a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes back in February. Since then Chris Ash has taken over as the head coach at Rutgers and Greg Schiano has replaced Ash as the Buckeyes defensive coordinator.

Schiano has also replaced Ash when it comes to recruiting Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola defensive back Carlos Becker, and Schiano has wasted no time in meeting with Becker on Thursday morning.

“Coach Schiano is sitting in my office as we speak,” Osceola head coach Doug Nichols said moments ago.

Last month Becker told Bucknuts.com he would make official visits to Florida State the weekend of Jan. 15, Ohio State Jan. 22 and Ole Miss Jan. 29.

“He’s still visiting Florida State this weekend and Ohio State Jan. 22,” Nichols said. “It will be either Ole Miss or Clemson Jan. 29.”

Becker previously visited Wisconsin and North Carolina State during the football season.

The 6-foot-2 and 185-pound Becker is being recruited by the Buckeyes as a cornerback. He played both cornerback and safety during his senior season and intercepted six passes. Playing cornerback as a junior Becker had five interceptions.

Becker is a 4-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings. He is the country’s No. 28 cornerback and the No. 38 prospect in Florida.

Inside the Top10 of the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings

Inside the Top10 of 247Sports Recruiting Rankings with three weekends to go before National Signing Day.

• LSU has the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class and four official visitors this weekend could easily end up in the fold by Signing Day.

I have 247Sports Crystal Ball forecasts in favor of the Tigers for five-star defensive tackle Rashard Lawrence, Top50 cornerback Kristian Fulton and Top100 offensive tackle Willie Allen. The Tigers also look like the team to beat for another in-state target headed up this weekend in former Tennessee commit D’Andre Christmas-Giles.

These visitors will be surrounded by most of LSU’s class as several members are also taking their official this weekend.

LSU takes their swing at Top50 safety Nigel Warrior this weekend as they aim to make up ground on Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

• Michigan’s No. 2 ranked recruiting class has a chance to get better this weekend in the form of Nixa (Mo.) High tight end Chase Allen. I believe the Wolverines are the team to beat headed into the weekend.

McKeesport (Pa.) High linebacker Khaleke Hudson also officials to Ann Arbor and Michigan is a top contender for the versatile defender as well.

This weekend is just a warm-up for the 22nd, Michigan’s final big recruiting weekend of the 2016 cycle.

The Wolverines are also spending all day Thursday visiting with the nation’s No. 1 recruit Rashan Gary. I still like Michigan here with Ole Miss remaining the biggest threat.

• Ohio State is right on Michigan’s heels for the top-ranked class in the Big Ten and I could see the Buckeyes ultimately signing three of their weekend visitors in Top100 athlete Jordan Fuller, in-state athlete Malik Harrison and Top247 defensive back Damar Hamlin. I already have 247Sports Crystal Ball picks in for OSU regarding Fuller and Harrison. Pittsburgh is the competition for Hamlin.

• Florida State is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for offensive lineman Stewart Reese, who visits this weekend, as does Top247 cornerback Carlos Becker who the Seminoles are significantly trending with. Becker was one of the top overall performers at the Under Armour All-American game and paired alongside five-star Levonta Taylor if he did choose the Seminoles, would give FSU arguably the top cornerback tandem in the country in the 2016 class.

• Georgia still has an outside shot to finish with the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class and this weekend would go a long way towards it.

I currently have a 247Sports Crystal Ball forecast in favor of the Bulldogs for the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker Lyndell Wilson, because of his close relationship with Kirby Smart. This weekend Wilson gets to see how Smart is living in his new digs. Alabama and Florida are very much in this as well and one 247Sports colleague suggested the last in-home visit may be key in this young man’s recruitment.

Five-star defensive end Brian Burns returns to Athens. I at one time had Burns forecasted to the Bulldogs but now have my pick on Florida. Florida State is another in play down the stretch as Georgia aims to remind Burns why UGA is the right place for him.

My 247Sports Crystal Ball forecast for four-star receiver Tre Nixon is on Penn State but Georgia has been in this one since a spring visit and playing in the South remains very attractive for the speedster out of Melbourne (Fla.) Viera.

Two committed elsewhere making their way to Georgia this weekend are Alabama verbal Tyler Simmons and Florida verbal Jeawon Taylor.

• Ole Miss’s big recruiting weekend down the stretch will be the 29th. Nothing happening in Oxford this weekend. As it stands now, the Rebels are in good shape to finish with the No. 1 player in the state Jeffery Simmons, Top50 safety Deontay Anderson, Top247 receiver Mykel Jones and they continue to push for Gary among others.

• Florida has the nation’s No. 7 recruiting class heading into the weekend and they’ll host three blue-chippers in linebacker Dontavious Jackson and offensive linemen Landon d!ckerson and John Simpson. The next two weekends following this one will be exciting for the Gators as they bring in recruits they lead for or are among the top two or three for.

Outside of perhaps LSU, in my opinion there won’t be a school that finishes stronger than Alabama as they aim for a sixth-straight 247Sports Recruiting National Championship. The next three weekends are stacked with touted recruits coming to Tuscaloosa. The most exciting recruit visiting Alabama this weekend is Top100 receiver A.J. Brown, who going back to the spring I’ve felt could easily end up part of the Crimson Tide’s class. Alabama is going to have a great chance to sign former Oregon commit in defensive back Jared Mayden. USC is considered the favorite for Top50 cornerback Jack Jones but if any school could change that it’s likely Alabama. The Crimson Tide are the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for receiver Keith Gavin, same thing with receiver Mykel Jones and tight end Nick Eubanks. Florida State running back commit Amir Rasul visits, one of the fastest players in the country. Florida linebacker commit Vosean Joseph is visiting as well.

• Notre Dame will host the country’s No. 1 inside linebacker in five-star Ben Davis. Alabama is considered the heavy 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for the legacy recruit, but the Irish will take their swing with the high-academic kid.

• There was a lot of buzz at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl that Auburn was trending with five-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown. He takes his official this weekend where he’ll continue to build that rapport with Rodney Garner. It’s beginning to look like legacy Stephen Davis Jr. will end up back in the class and Auburn has a chance at Top50 receiver Nate Craig-Myers and his brother in former Florida cornerback commit Jayvaughn Myers. All three join Brown on the visitor list for the weekend. Auburn is really pushing for defensive end Joshua Uche as well and we’ll see where the Tigers stand with intriguing offensive tackle recruit Lucas Niang following his trip.

VIP Scoop: FSU Coaches To Sit Down With Miami DB

Thursday is a busy day for Florida State defensive coordinator Charles Kelly and a.ssistant Tim Brewster. Noles247 has already confirmed two stops for them today, one in Texas to see Dontavious Jackson and an afternoon trip to Mississippi to see Raekwon Davis.

The third stop will be this evening in Miami when Kelly and Brewster go in-home with four-star defensive back commitment Jamel Cook.

The primary reason for this visit will be to see where Cook's head is at in terms of his future with FSU. In recent days Cook has set visits with LSU, USC and Louisville, but has not made plans to take an official visit to FSU. It'll be interesting to see the result of this in-home visit.

Terps Going In-Home With Top Recruit

IMS has learned that defensive line coach Mike London and defensive backs coach Aazaar Rahim are currently going in-home with four-star St. John's (DC) defensive end Terrell Hall. On the first day of the contact period, Hall hosted visits from coaches from Florida State and Maryland today in his school and is expecting Alabama tomorrow, per a source.

Hall broke news earlier this week that he decided to take an official visit to College Park, a direct product of the Terps' staff making the four-star a priority.

The Terps have been trending in a major way since former Alabama a.ssistant Aazaar Rahim was brought on the staff. Hall still has official visits to Alabama and Ole Miss before making a final decision on signing day. Stay tuned for more.

VIP Scoop: DT To Officially Visit Seminoles

Florida State had two defensive tackles enroll at the start of January, but they continue to pursue others to finish out their class.

One target is New Orleans (La.) McDonogh 35 four-star defensive tackle Stephon Taylor.

FSU recently made the top five for Taylor. They were joined by LSU, Oklahoma South Carolina and Texas.

Taylor has already taken an official to Oklahoma. He is set to see Texas this weekend.

According to a source close to Taylor, he will officially visit the Seminoles next weekend - on the 22nd.

He is being recruited by area recruiter Randy Sanders as well as defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins.

The 247Sports.com Crystal Ball is shared by the Tigers and Longhorns.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Taylor as the No. 288 overall prospect and No. 29 defensive tackle.

VIP Scoop: FSU Goes In Home, Secures Official

Florida State quarterbacks coach and area recruiter Randy Sanders made his way to New Orleans (La.) McDonogh 35 on Thursday to check on a safety target for the Seminoles.

Three-star safety Clifford Chattman tells Noles247.com that his in-home with Sanders on Thursday evening went well and that the Seminoles have scheduled an official visit for the weekend of January 22nd.

FSU is recruiting the 6-foot-4, 175-pound prospect as a strong safety. Chattman reports an offer from the Seminoles too.

Chattman is scheduled to see Arizona this weekend and Texas A&M on the weekend of the 29th.

The 247Sports.com Crystal Ball has no predictions.

Chattman is ranked as the No. 47 athlete in the nation by the 247Sports.com Composite.

VIP Scoop: Alabama visit back on for FSU commit

Earlier this week Florida State four-star offensive line commitment Baveon Johnson told Noles247's Chris Nee that his visit to Alabama this weekend was off.

Well, things have changed and on Friday morning Johnson tweeted that he was on his way to Alabama. We've also been able to confirm with an independent source that Johnson is indeed visiting the National Champions this weekend on an official visit.

After speaking to a source close to the Florida State program this morning, we are told there are no concerns over this trip and that the staff fully expects Johnson to sign with FSU in a few weeks.

Official Visits Preview: FSU To Host Three

Florida State is expected to host at least three official visitors this weekend. Two of the visitors are solid commitments while the third is a top target.

Notes: Josh Ball has been committed to Florida State since early June. He made that commitment after a pre-summer visit to Tallahassee. He has returned on multiple unofficial visits. In addition to FSU, Ball continues to entertain interest from N.C. State, who he officially visited in late October, and Virginia, who he is scheduled to see next weekend. At this time, Ball comes off as a solid commitment to the Seminoles. He remains in regular contact with offensive line coach Rick Trickett.

Notes: Logan Tyler committed to Florida State in early June while attending a kicking camp. He returned for an unofficial visit during the early part of the season. Tyler is a solid commitment to the Seminoles. He remains in regular contact with special teams coordinator Jay Graham. Tyler could potentially kick and/or punt for the Seminoles.

Notes: Carlos Becker is an uncommitted prospect. He was involved with Florida State back in the spring, but interest waned over the summer. After FSU reviewed some senior film on Becker, they decided to go all-in on the long, lanky and versatile defensive back. Becker has already taken officials to N.C. State and Wisconsin, but the Badgers are no longer in the mix. Ohio State and Ole Miss are expected to host him over the next two weekends, but national interest continues to increase in Becker. For example, Clemson is trying to bump his Ole Miss visit and bring him in on the final weekend. Becker is a top priority for defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Charles Kelly. It would be best for FSU to secure a pledge and end his recruitment this weekend while he is in Tallahassee. Becker has simply stated that he will decide when he is ready to.

FSU Recuiting: What We Learned This Week

It’s been a busy week for Florida State. Here’s what we've learned over the last seven days:

1) Multiple sources we’ve spoken with on all sides of the recruitment of four-star cornerback Carlos Becker indicate Florida State is the team to beat. Ohio State is likely the Seminoles biggest competition as Signing Day nears.

2) FSU and four-star cornerback Jared Mayden have decided to move his official visit from this weekend to January 29th. I think there’s a good chance this visit never happens. FSU is looking to add two more corners to their class and it seems that Trayvon Mullen and Carlos Becker are the top targets.

3) Florida State coaches hit the road in force on Thursday and Friday coming out of the dead period. It seems Tim Brewster and Charles Kelly paired up as tag-team partners to make a trio of crucial visits on Thursday. Kelly and Brewster started in Texas to see inside backer Dontavious Jackson, then on to Mississippi to meet with Alabama defensive tackle commit Raekwon Davis and finally down to Miami for a night time visit with safety commitment Jamel Cook. Three prospects, three states, all important, all in one day. The grind never stops for these guys.

4) On Thursday Chris Nee reported that three-star offensive lineman Stewart Reese has moved his visit back to January 29th. It’s questionable whether or not Reese would be a take. His late visits likely means he’s a backup plan incase FSU’s top targets - Landon d!ckerson and Jauan Williams go elsewhere.

5) A new defensive end target emerged this week. Florida State has offered Victor Valley JUCO four-star weak-side defensive end Dougladson Subtyl. Subtyl is originally from Florida, born in Haiti, and even though he’s committed to Arizona State a source informs Noles247 that the FSU staff feels good about their chances of flipping him.

6) Florida State offensive line commitment Baveon Johnson’s visit to Alabama is back on. He’ll take an official visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend and FSU next weekend. I’d say the chances that Johnson flips to ‘Bama are about the same as the odds Levonta Taylor flips to UF.

7) Florida State went into McDonogh high school (New Orleans, LA) this week and made some big news by locking down a visit with four-star defensive tackle Stephon Taylor. The ‘Noles also extended a new offer to Taylor’s teammate, three-star defensive back Clifford Chattman. The two will visit together next weekend. Chattman is a 6-foot-4 safety that could be a replacement for Jamel Cook if he flips to Miami.

Penn State Offers A Pair Of Florida Juniors

Penn State offered a pair of Class of 2017 teammates at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions extended scholarships to junior defensive back Daniel Wright and wide receiver/defensive back Leroy Henley.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Wright is the No. 6 safety nationally in the next cycle and the No. 87 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the No. 13 prospect in Florida’s Class of 2017. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and others have offered the four-star prospect. Florida State, which has not offered, owns all six predictions on his 247Sports Crystal Ball.

The 6-foot, 182-pound Henley is a three-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. he is the nation’s No. 72 wide receiver and the No. 58 prospect in Florida. Auburn, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and West Virginia are among his early offers.

Four Star DE Looking Forward To Returning To South Carolina

Madison (Ga.) Morgan County four-star defensive end MJ Webb picked up an offer from South Carolina today, and he already has a relationship with multiple members of the new coaching staff in Columbia.

“I was excited (about the offer) because coach (Will) Muschamp and coach (Lance) Thompson are now over at South Carolina,” the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Webb said. “Coach Thompson was my main recruiter when he was at Auburn. South Carolina was my very first college visit when my freshman year.”

Webb enjoyed that visit and is looking forward to a return.

“I really enjoyed it over there, but since then I know they've built some new facilities, and I really want to see them,” he said. “So, I'll be visiting there whenever they have a junior day.”

Webb is still considering several impressive programs.

“Schools like Tennessee, Ole Miss, Ohio State, UGA, Florida State, Clemson and others.”

He knows what he is looking for as he evaluates each school.

“Me enjoying the campus and what it has to offer. And imagining myself attending a school and not playing football because when it is all said and done and football is over, I need my degree to fall back on.”

Webb is in no hurry to make a decision.

“Probably before or during my senior season if not on National Signing Day next year.”

FSU offers Cali WR

Even though the Florida State staff is working hard to put the final touches on the 2016 class, they're also looking ahead to the future. Way into the future. Today FSU offered 2018 wide receiver Brian Hightower.

The Cali wide receiver isn't ranked yet, but does have a healthy list of early offers including, Alabama, UCLA, Nebraska and Tennessee to name a few.
