Fans Getting Creative on Twitter With Devin White Recruiting

Springhill (La.) North Webster 247Composite 4-star Devin White visited Arkansas officially last weekend and is heading to LSU tomorrow.

White also played host to Bret Bielema, Michael Smith and Jemal Singleton on Wednesday and then was followed up with the LSU coaches. White is a great running back, but is also outstanding at linebacker thus the reason he's an athlete on 247Sports. However, it's running back that Arkansas, LSU, Florida State, Alabama and Ole Miss want him to play.

With Arkansas is very much need to two running backs in this class the fans sense the desire for White to be a Razorback.

RT @DevinWhite_40 The Best Big RB + Biggest line in football = SCARY! #Heisman #WPS #Uncommon @BretBielema pic.twitter.com/lJpOCXRcqo

Arkansas will lose senior Jonathan Williams to the NFL. There's almost no chance junior Alex Collins returns to the Hogs. That leaves true freshman Rawleigh Williams III and junior Kody Walker as the lone experienced running backs returning.

White has a grade of 95 with the 247Composite, No. 93 in the Top247, No. 5 athlete and No. 7 prospect in Louisiana.

VIP Scoop: Brewster sees South Florida commit

Florida State tight ends coach Tim Brewster made his way to South Florida on Thursday to check in on multiple prospects. One prospect that he dropped in on was Miami (Fla.) Norland three-star linebacker Emmett Rice.

Rice, who has been committed to the Seminoles since February, officially visited FSU back in October. He has also taken an official visit to West Virginia. He intends to take a few other visits before signing in February.

"I'm taking other visits," Rice said when asked if he was done with the process on Thursday evening.

Rice stated that some potential destinations include Louisville, Miami and UCF.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Rice as the No. 25 outside linebacker in the nation.

VIP Scoop: Change In Plans For Tight End Target

The official visitor list for Florida State got a bit thinner on Thursday evening.

Following an in-home visit with USC tight ends coach Marques Tuiasosopo, Exton (Pa.) Downingtown East four-star tight end Cary Angeline, who is committed to the Trojans, is no longer expected to make his way to Florida State this weekend for an official visit, per a source familiar with his recruitment.

Angeline has been pursued by the Seminoles for the past several months. Tight ends coach Tim Brewster has led the charge.

Angeline has no other visits scheduled at this time.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Angeline as the No. 8 tight end in the nation.

FSU Official Visit Preview

Florida State is hosting a pair of Washington D.C. visitors on the last weekend before the dead period begins. Both recruits are considered at, or near, the top of the board for their positions.

Here’s a look at who is coming to Tallahassee this weekend:

================================

DE Terrell Hall
(6-5, 250)
Washington (D.C.) St John’s

Ranking: 4-Star, No.5 ranked weak-side defensive end, 77th overall.

The Skinny: This will be Hall’s first visit to Florida State’s campus. Even though FSU had been recruiting Hall since the spring, things didn’t really start to pick up with the ‘Noles until Randy Edsell was fired at Maryland. FSU has pulled out all the stops since the season ended, visiting him twice at his home in D.C. and this week FSU brought in head coach Jimbo Fisher. Maryland is firmly back in the mix with the hiring of DJ Durkin. Along with FSU and Maryland, UGA, Arizona State and Texas A&M are also among those hoping to land Hall. His final decision won’t come until Signing Day.

Crystal Ball Says: 81% for Alabama, 12% for Penn State, 6% for Ohio State.

================================

OT Jauan Williams
(6-7, 305)
Washington (D.C.) Archbishop Carroll

Ranking: 4-Star, No.16 ranked offensive tackle, 156th overall.

The Skinny: FSU got Williams on campus over the summer for camp. He was a guy that FSU liked, but needed to see more of before making a decision on whether to offer or not. By the time camp was over and Williams left campus, he was a top target for Rick Trickett. FSU fell in love with his size and athleticism. He’s remained in contact with FSU throughout the season and has built a solid relationship with Trickett. FSU’s main competition comes from Alabama, Maryland, Arizona State and Virginia Tech.

Crystal Ball Says: 50% for Alabama, 42% for Maryland, 8% for Ohio State.

================================

Florida State will also be hosting two commitments on official visits this weekend. Three-star offensive guard/center Andrew Boselli and three-star kicker/punter Ricky Aguayo. Both are early enrollees and have been rock solid in their commitments to FSU.

VIP Scoop: FSU Checks In On Top 2017 Target

Florida State co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders dropped in on LaVergne (Tenn.) four-star junior athlete Maleik Gray on Tuesday.

Gray is a top target for Florida State. Other top contenders include Tennessee and USC.

Gray tells Noles247.com that he is not close to a decision nor in a rush to decide. He had previously mentioned the possibility of making an early decision.

The 6-foot-1.5, 195-pound athlete has been a regular at FSU in recent years, most recently attending the Miami game during this past season.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Gray as the No. 32 overall prospect and No. 2 athlete in the 2017 class.

VIP Scoop: FSU Drops In On d!ckerson Again

Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett made his way by Hudson (N.C.) South Caldwell on Wednesday to check on four-star offensive tackle Landon d!ckerson.

It was Trickett's second visit in as many weeks to see the 6-foot-5, 293-pound offensive lineman.

d!ckerson has officially visited the Seminoles as well as Auburn. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee are also clearly in the running. The Volunteers got a pair of unofficial visits in November. The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs are tentatively scheduled to receive visits in January.

d!ckerson recently mentioned to 247Sports.com that he may unofficially visit FSU in January. More on that here.

Virginia Tech, where d!ckerson has family ties, has faded some in recent weeks with a coaching change.

The 247Sports.com Crystal Ball reads 75-percent for the Hokies at this time.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks d!ckerson as the No. 51 prospect in the nation and No. 7 offensive tackle in the nation.

VIP Nugget: Bama Offers FSU RB Commit

Alabama has put an offer on the table for Florida State running back commit Amir Rasul, a four-star prospect out of Miami (Fla.) Coral Gables, according to 247Sports National Recruiting Insider Ryan Bartow.

Tide offensive line coach Mario Cristobal visited Rasul on Wednesday at his high school, which you can get a recap of here.

A source tells Bartow, Rasul was "excited to get the offer" and it was "one he wanted."

Rasul plans to officially visit Tuscaloosa on Jan. 15, a trip that could be a pivotal moment in his recruitment.

“(Alabama) hasn't been recruiting me as a hard as Florida State," Rasul told BamaOnline on Thursday. "But you know if things start to pick up then, you know, we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Rasul, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound prospect, is rated the No. 7 running back and the No. 200 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite.

Pivotal official visits to keep an eye on this weekend

The nation’s top quarterback recruit in Lake Stevens (Wash.) Senior five-star Jacob Eason is back at Georgia this weekend with his family as he closes in on a final decision. A commit to the Bulldogs since July of 2014, the U.S. Army All-American has always remained in contact with other schools in case there were coaching changes in Athens, which there obviously has been. Eason first saw the offensive coordinator he committed to in Mike Bobo leave for the head job at Colorado State, and then a year later it was Mark Richt who was out in Athens. Through it all, Eason has never decommitted from Georgia but he has taken officials to Florida and Washington since the end of the season. Eason passed on a trip to New York with the five other finalists for U.S. Army All-American Bowl Player of the Year to focus in on his final decision. Planning to enroll early, this thing will be wrapped up very soon. Coincidentally, Eason and fellow five-star offensive lineman Ben Cleveland committed to Georgia on the same day and he is also taking his official this weekend. The Bulldogs have the nation’s No. 6 recruiting class with a chance to finish in the top three if not higher but that will be tough to pull off without Eason remaining in the fold.

Auburn gets the last crack at Top100 defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson as they continue to battle Ohio State going into his Dec. 17 college decision. There isn’t a school Jackson has visited more than the Tigers, the long-time 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite. Ohio State has made this very tight down the stretch getting the U.S. Army All-American to campus several times including for an official in November. Both Urban Meyer and Gus Malzahn were in-home this week. Both defensive line coaches Rodney Garner and Larry Johnson attended Jackson’s game last week. This one is tight down the stretch but Auburn appears to be in good position.

Following his decommitment from UCLA it appeared five-star defensive end Oluwole Betiku, the No. 1 recruit in California would be headed to Texas A&M. However USC looks to be closing strong and the Trojans have the 247Sports Crystal Ball advantage heading into this weekend's official. Betiku took an unofficial last month to USC where he got a chance to sit down with Clay Helton.

Four-star quarterback Tristen Wallace may not stick with the Buckeyes, and as Ohio State prepares for that possibility, they have guys like Louisville commit Tylin Oden on the radar, however this weekend they’re bringing in one of its top targets of the entire cycle in Maryland Top100 commit Dwayne Haskins. Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the country, it isn’t clear how serious Haskins is about flipping to a school like Ohio State or Florida, where he visited in November. One of the things Haskins is truly looking for is an opportunity to play as a true freshman, where he’ll have that as a Terp. The Buckeyes can certainly sell an opportunity to play at one of Haskins’s dream schools while given a chance to develop behind a guy like J.T. Barrett while not getting rushed onto the field perhaps too early. Most of the Buckeyes top-ranked recruiting class according to 247Sports will also be in Columbus taking their official visits.

Speaking of Wallace, he is slated to take officials to UCLA and Oregon this weekend. The No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the country has been a verbal to the Buckeyes since April but will ge the two Pac 12 powers an opportunity.

Right next to Rashan Gary at the top of Michigan’s recruiting board you would find Top100 offensive tackle Jean Delance, who takes his official to Ann Arbor this weekend. Michigan is a top contender for the Mesquite (Texas) North Mesquite blue-chipper along with Texas and Alabama. One source told 247Sports Friday morning that he thinks it may be a Wolverines-LSU battle. With that being said Texas is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite.

The nation’s No. 2 inside linebacker Rahshaun Smith returns to Clemson, a former Tigers commit that opened the process back in August so he could take officials. This is the last official for the Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy talent, who took previous trips to Auburn, Oregon, LSU and Maryland. A Baltimore native, Smith was back in the area for his official to see the Terrapins last weekend. This looks like a Clemson-Maryland battle down the stretch with the Tigers holding the slight advantage on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Clemson appears to have grabbed hold of the recruitment of five-star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, but N.C. State remains a threat to keep the U.S. Army All-American in-state. Alabama and Florida are two others in the mix for the blue-chipper, but sources recently indicated that Lawrence stays close to home.

The nation’s No. 3 pro-style quarterback likely visits Florida this weekend, but the LSU is working to get him back to Baton Rouge one more time before he enrolls early.

A U.S. Army All-American, Franks was a long-time LSU commit before flipping to Florida late last month. The Tigers have been inside the home twice during the current contact period but Gators coach Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier are at his game Friday.

Long time Ole-Miss commit Shea Patterson takes an official to Alabama.

The nation’s No. 2 quarterback, Patterson was scheduled to have Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin in his home Wednesday.

While Patterson appears solid to Ole Miss, we never rule out any trip to Alabama as a potential game-changer.

• Alabama: The Crimson Tide will see five-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown, Top247 receiver Keith Gavin and former Florida four-star verbal Jayvaughn Myers this weekend as well as a couple commits. Georgia is the heavy 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for Brown while the Crimson Tide hold that position with Gavin. Alabama would like to sign one more receiver in 2016 and Gavin is on the list with several other blue-chippers like Demetris Robertson and A.J. Brown as a potential option.

• Arizona State: The nation’s No. 1 running back Kareem Walker takes his official to Arizona State this weekend. The Sun Devils have always been in the picture for the former Ohio State commit, but Michigan and Alabama appear to be in better position at this point in the process. The Wolverines hold the 247Sports Crystal Ball edge.

• Auburn: Joining Jackson on campus will be the nation’s No. 3 JUCO defensive tackle Tyrell Chavis.

• Duke: A pair of four-star defensive ends visit Duke this weekend in Prince Sammons and Chidi Okonya, along with another defensive end in Terrell Lucas. The Blue Devils have been trending on the 247Sports Crystal Ball with Sammons who could also develop into an offensive tackle on the next level.

• Florida: The Gators have three more on campus in addition to potentially Frankis in JUCO offensive tackle Malcolm Pridgeon, TCU tight end commit Artayvious Lynn and recent South Carolina defensive end decommit Jordan Smith. Several of the Gators commits will be in Gainesville as well.

• Florida State: The Seminoles have annually done well recruiting the DMV and this weekend they will entertain two of Washington D.C.’s finest in Top100 defensive end Terrell Hall and Top247 offensive tackle Jauan Williams. Hall is considered an Alabama lean but he’s taking his time to make a final decision after decommitting from Ohio State.

• Georgia: Top100 offensive tackle Willie Allen and Top100 offensive guard Terrance Davis will be in Athens. LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss are among the other contenders for Allen, and Davis arrives very high on Michigan, Maryland and Florida.

• Kentucky: The Wildcats will have most of their commits on campus along with the nation’s No. 6 JUCO outside linebacker Jordan Bonner and Sunshine State defensive tackle Trysten Hill. The Wildcats are battling the Vols for Bonner.

• Louisville: It’s a big weekend on Louisville’s campus Top50 cornerback Trayvon Mullen and fellow U.S. Army All-American receiver Ahmonn Richards headlining a strong group that also includes the country’s No. 2 JUCO inside linebacker Chris Baccus.

• LSU: The No. 2 recruiting class in the country could get better this weekend as Top100 athlete Devin White, a running back recruit and early enrollee target for the Tigers, could end up leaving Baton Rouge this weekend part of LSU’s class. The nation’s No. 5 athlete is considered a heavy Tigers lean on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. LSU continues to battle TCU for Top100 receiver Stephen Sullivan and Ole Miss for another Top100 receiver in speedster Drake Davis. Georgia linebacker commit Jaleel Laguins is also visiting along with touted Top247 defensive back recruit Joejuan Williams.

• Maryland: The Terrapins will surround Top247 offensive guard Richard Merritt, the No. 2 ranked recruit in Washington D.C. according to 247Sports, by a lot of their commitments this weekend. Merritt’s visit is an unofficial per InsideMDSports.

• Miami: The Hurricanes have maintained a Top20 recruiting class through all the coaching turmoil and with Richt now at the controls, it looks like it should be smooth sailing into signing day. Two visiting this weekend that likely end up in the class are Top247 outside linebacker Zach McCloud and Top247 defensive end Patrick Bethel.

• Michigan: Delance isn’t the only major Wolverines target visiting this weekend. Michigan is the team to beat for Top247 linebacker Jonathan Jones headed into the weekend and Jim Harbaugh and his staff are looking to make a late move with Top247 receiver Nate Johnson who has seen his stock soar late in the process.

• Mississippi State: The Bulldogs will see long-time defensive line target Emmit Gooden, who has been an absolute regular back on campus. JUCO receiver Justin McInnis also makes his way to Starkville. An offer from the Bulldogs would make Mississippi State tough to beat.

• Nebraska: Top247 offensive tackle Royce Newman, a Missouri commit headlines the group in Lincoln which also includes former Minnesota quarterback commit Tony Poljan who is a tight end target for Nebraska along with Ohio cornerback Tony Butler and Cal linebacker commit Cameron Goode.

• Notre Dame: Five-star outside linebacker Caleb Kelly and Top100 athlete Jordan Fuller are the two uncommitted visitors for the Irish’s football banquet this weekend. Oklahoma is considered the favorite for Kelly with ND being perhaps the biggest threat. Notre Dame is battling the likes of Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State for Fuller.

• Ohio State: In addition to Haskins, Top247 receiver Donnie Corley will take his official to Columbus as the Buckeyes look like the biggest threat to Michigan State for the U.S. Army All-American.

• Oklahoma: The No. 1 prospect in Oklahoma in U.S. Army All-American Tramonda Moore heads to Norman, as does five-star linebacker Mique Juarez. Top50 athlete Jack Jones, a lock-down corner or dynamic slot receiver out of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly may also visit.

• Texas: Texas has a strong group of recruits headed to town in Tennessee defensive tackle commit D’Andre Christmas-Giles, Texas A&M tight end verbal Irvin Smith, linebacker David Reese, four-star safety Devin Studstill and cornerback Eric Cuffee. Reese’s family loves Texas and if it was closer to home he’d be considered a huge Longhorns lean. Texas is battling Florida, TCU and Nebraska for Reese.

• Texas A&M: The Aggies have a great shot to sign all three official visitors this weekend. The nation’s No. 1 safety in five-star Brandon Jones, defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and offensive tackle Ryan McCollum are all slated to be in College Station.

• South Carolina: The most important visitor of the weekend is the nation’s No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in long-time commit Brandon McIlwain, as the Gamecocks look to hold off Penn State for the Gamecocks legacy. Top100 receiver Bryan Edwards returns, a former commit that attended just about every home game this year, but is seriously considering Clemson down the stretch. The nation’s No. 2 JUCO cornerback Jamarcus King is another notable target headed in, as is receiver Cavin Ridley and Virginia Tech receiver commit Samuel Denmark.

• UCLA: Top100 defensive lineman Boss Tagaloa and Top100 tight end/defensive end Devin Asiasi along with Pennsylvania linebacker Khaleke Hudson will be on the Bruins campus with many of the program’s commits. Tagaloa has been considered a UCLA lean for the entire recruiting process.

• USC: Long-time BYU commit four-star defensive back Troy Warner was offered by the Trojans this week and visits this weekend. Warner’s older brother plays for the Cougars.

• Virginia Tech: The No. 1 ranked JUCO quarterback in the country, No. 8 player overall in Trinity Valley’s Jerod Evans makes his way to Blacksburg, as does his little brother, Dallas (Texas) Bishop Dunne 2016 quarterback Caleb Evans. Bethesda (Md.) Landon School linebacker Keith Simms is also making a visit. The Hokies are battling Missouri for the older Evans who could decide soon.

Gavin injured at conclusion of state championship

Florida State four-star wide receiver target Keith Gavin suffered an injury to his right shoulder in the closing seconds of the FHSAA Class 5A State Championship, which Wakulla lost 37-34 to Bishop Moore.

Gavin did not return to action for the final snaps. He was being treated on the sideline.

At the conclusion of the game, Gavin retreated to an ambulance within the stadium where he underwent further treatment.

An immediate diagnosis was not given.

Prior to the injury, Gavin had a 72-yard kick return and five receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Gavin was scheduled to officially visit Alabama this week, but that visit is in jeopardy due to his injury.

Before reaching a decision, Gavin has stated he wants to officially visit Alabama, Florida State and potentially Georgia. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles are viewed as the two top contenders for his services.

Alabama leads FSU 51-49 on the 247Sports.com Crystal Ball.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Gavin as the No. 141 overall prospect and No. 27 wide receiver.

Call it the Bush Push, Part 2.

Florida State plans to utilize the final day before the dead period by doing an in-home visit with four-star linebacker Devin Bush Jr.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher, along with a.ssistant coaches including Bill Miller, are expected to be a part of the visit.

The visit is expected to occur on Sunday. Bush Jr. and his Flanagan squad play for the Class 8A State Championship on Saturday evening in Orlando, Fla.

Bush Jr. is set to announce on December 16th. His decision is between Auburn, Florida State and Michigan, but most believe it comes down to the Seminoles or Wolverines.

The 247Sports.com Crystal Ball reads 69-percent for the Seminoles. Michigan is second with 28-percent of predictions.

The 247Sports.com Composite ranks Bush as the No. 238 prospect overall and No. 11 inside linebacker.

Another Official Visitor At FSU

Florida State is hosting at least five official visitors.

New Berlin (N.Y.) Milford Academy offensive tackle Mike Arnold is visiting. Before going to prep school, Arnold played his high school ball at Winter Haven (Fla.).

The 6-foot-6, 300-plus pound offensive tackle signed with Virginia Tech this past February, but lack of a test score forced him to take the prep school route.

With regards to Florida State, Arnold is drawing interest from offensive line coach Rick Trickett and his former high school area recruiter Odell Haggins. The Seminoles, who have offered according to Arnold, are interested in him as a left tackle.

Arnold has drawn interest from Florida, Ohio State, South Florida, Virginia Tech and more. A decision is likely to come soon as Arnold states he is a mid-year enrollee.

Coming out of high school, Arnold was ranked as a three-star and the No. 89 offensive tackle in the nation by the 247Sports.com Composite.

He is staying. Came out yesterday that he's not going anywhere according to Kyle Meyers (our DB commit) and several other sources. Kelly wants to be a HC one day and he figured if he stays at FSU and has a dominating D for a few years he will be on the fast track to get a HC job. Plus, Auburn has hardly anyone returning on the D side of the ball and FSU is loaded for years to come with talent. So he was like why leave when next year he could be looking for a job if Gus Malzahan gets canned

Kelly's loyalty to Fisher kept him at FSU

Auburn’s courtship of Florida State defensive coordinator Charles Kelly is over. The nearly week long saga of rumors and reading of tea leaves is over. At least for Florida State fans.

The dust has settled. Charles Kelly is not going to Auburn and the Tigers are now moving on with their search for a new defensive coordinator. As for Kelly, he’s still on the road recruiting for FSU.

Considering all the perceived chaos surrounding this week’s developments, Charles Kelly’s week was business as usual, for the most part.

After speaking with people directly involved with the situation, it’s worth taking a look back and deciphering what was fact and what was fiction, during a week of reports that had Charles Kelly leaving FSU for the same job at Auburn.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes notes on what was going on during the past four or five days.

— On Sunday Auburn zeroed in on Charles Kelly as the top candidate to replace Will Muschamp, who was announced on Saturday as the new head coach at South Carolina.

— Noles247 reported on Tuesday that Charles Kelly was expected to return to Florida State. At that point Kelly had not been offered the position by Auburn, but his decision was already made. We never reported anything new after our original report because nothing had changed on Kelly’s end throughout the week.

— Charles Kelly was never formally offered the Auburn defensive coordinator job. He didn’t let it get that far. Kelly was contacted on Monday or Tuesday by a representative from Auburn about replacing Muschamp. The days that followed didn’t involve negotiations or secret meetings, it was really just Auburn trying to set up a meeting with Kelly.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Kelly was bombarded by calls. Auburn pulled out all the stops and had former players, teammates, coaches and friends calling Kelly and trying to persuade him to come home. Old teammates and friends that Kelly hadn’t talked to in 20 years were now blowing up his phone. One of the most influential people in Kelly’s life was also recruiting him back to Auburn. Kelly’s former college head coach at Auburn, Pat Dye, was one of the people that spoke to him multiple times during the week.

— Rumors of a face-to-face meeting between Gus Malzahn and Charles Kelly on Thursday night are false. Reports of any face-to-face meeting last week are false.

— I can confirm that Kelly was doing an inhome visit with Kyle Meyers on Thursday night. He was with fellow FSU a.ssistant coach Randy Sanders. The two flew in together on a private plane and flied out together on the same plane back to Tallahassee.

During the visit with Kyle Meyers, Kelly and Meyers read on Twitter that Kelly was going to be announced as the next head coach at Auburn at a press conference on Friday morning. That was news to Kelly. He told Meyers he wasn’t going anywhere.

— I can confirm that while they didn’t meet face-to-face, Malzahn and Kelly spoke over the phone. Kelly was busy recruiting for FSU all week. The week prior to the dead period is always a busy one on the recruiting trail, which ended up keeping keeping Kelly insulating from a lot of the craziness that was going on in the media. I’m told he didn’t take all the calls that were coming in from those surrounding the Auburn program, he didn’t read any of the reports and didn’t take any calls from reporters. Not because he was hiding, but because he was simply too busy recruiting.

— The reason Charles Kelly was never formally offered the job by Gus Malzahn, was due to Kelly himself. He didn't allow their conversation to go in that direction. He didn’t want to turn Gus down, he didn’t want to turn Auburn down, he just wanted to stay at Florida State.

— In the same way Malzahn never formally offered Kelly, the two also never talked dollars. I believe Kelly was aware of the numbers (somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 million, three year contract), but the numbers were never spoken of during Malzahn and Kelly’s phone call. Again, Kelly did not allow the conversation to go in that direction.

Why Did Kelly Want To Stay At FSU?

The reason is Jimbo Fisher. There are other things that came into play as well, but to sum it up, Charles Kelly is returning to FSU because of Jimbo Fisher.

Kelly has deep loyalty to Fisher, who gave Kelly his first shot at calling defensive plays at the highest level. Kelly’s first year at FSU wasn’t nearly as successful as he, or anyone, had hoped it would be. Coming off a National Championship, Kelly was put in an incredibly difficult spot due to the amount of talent that departed. The defense struggled in 2014, but Jimbo’s faith in Kelly, “never flinched”, a source tells Noles247.

Fisher was told early in the week by Kelly that he was going to stay at Florida State. There wasn’t a whole lot of back-and-forth going on between Fisher and Kelly throughout the week because of the nature of their relationship and the trust the two have in each other. Kelly gave Fisher his word and Fisher had no reason to question it, even among the wild reports that Kelly was headed back to The Plains.

Another big reason for Kelly’s return is the youth on defense. Coaching players such as Josh Sweat, Tarvarus McFadden, Demarcus Christmas, plus the incoming players like Levonta Taylor and Janarius Robinson were all reasons Kelly is returning. But a talent like Derwin James is something coaches may only experience once or twice during their entire career. I was specifically told Derwin James is a player Kelly will be, “telling his grandkids about one day”.

=======================

Overall, the drama that took place this week was more fiction than fact. The rumors of meetings, offers and expectations that Kelly was headed to Auburn were greatly exaggerated through media reports.

There’s no doubt that Charles Kelly had an emotional week. Turning down an opportunity to return home and call the defense at Auburn was hard on him. However, the decision to return to Florida State was never murky, it was actually quite an easy one for Kelly.
