Back in May it was confirmed that the F80 M3 and F82 M4 would be powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine and indeed we've just received these first photos of the next gen M3/M4 engine, with visual proof of the inline cylinder setup.

The F80 M3 / F82 M4 will have some good cooling of the heated air pumping from its turbos, via components such as the air-to-water/liquid intercooler unit (to the right of the engine cover) feeding the cylinders with cooled air. If this setup is anything like in the M5/M6 S63Tu engine, the air is cooled by this unit right before it reaches the cylinders. There appears to be twin intake boxes and the oil cooler bracket looks to be the same as on the N54 and N55 engines.

The photos do not confirm the exact number of turbos, but the two charge pipes feeding the intercooler is a sign that it probably has at least two turbochargers. Whether a third electric turbo (rumored) lies somewhere out of sight remains to be seen.

Expect this engine to output in the ballpark of 450 horsepowers (UPDATE: we've now confirmed that this is an overestimate; it will instead feature approximately the same HP as current M3 (414hp) while adding 100lb-ft more torque). It's been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. This engine may also be a reworked/enhanced version of the successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced).

The F80 M3 will no doubt be the stiffest M3 yet, and the brawny strut tower brace surely contributes to just how tightly the entire car will handle and feel.



To recap on the F80 M3 / F82 M4:

•Lighter than current M3
◦targeting E46 M3 weight
•More powerful than current M3
◦approximately same HP, but around 100 lb-ft more torque (in range of 395 lb-ft)
•Faster than current M3
•More efficient than current M3
•Powered by an inline 6 cylinder multi turbo engine
•Offered with optional or standard manual transmission
•Electric Power Steering (completely reworked for precision for M3/M4)
•Tires (from prototype) - Michelin Pilot Super Sport: 255/35/19 (front), 275/35/19 (rear)
•Front styling to feature elements from the M6 and 1M coupe, with Air Curtain technology (our render)
•Hood to feature power/vent bump
•M3 Introduced late 2013 - early 2014 (concept debuts earlier)
•M4 Introduced no earlier than late 2014

looks like and im pretty sure its the same motor as the 6 series grand coupe just probably different turbo set up. I own an e46 m3 and i dont know if im ready to buy an m3 that shares the same motor as an 6 or even if having an turbo as an m

E46 M3 is usually a bad idea unless ur willing to pay top dollar on 1 to get a good example, but then to most people they'd rather have something else for that type of money.

Won't be if they still have the 50k mile or 100k mile deal. When i had my bmw they had the 50k mile and i didn't pay for sh*t, not even the tires. I had tire protection and any time they were going bald the service guys would write them off like i got a puncture etc. I didn't pay for brakes, oil change, electric solenoid that went bad on one of my doors that prevented me from opening gas tank, nothing. This is the reason so much bmw's are on the road now..

yeah your right bmw and turbo cars dont really match the ones i experience man. there going to be a lot of problems the first year and after warranty is out these cars are expensive to maintain i remember i bought my m3 with 24 thousand miles i wanted to make sure i was the person to maintain the car but there expensive some of them require value service every 30 thousand miles and thats if your car doeskin break
