What do you consider a huge amount of time? a.ssociates degree? Bachelors degree?

Engineering would probably be the best in my opinion but that's 4 years at least. I'd say get your networking certifications but you won't be making a whole ton of money with that.

Western Governor's University sounds like it would be your best friend.

You get 3 main options in my opinion.

Security
Software
Networking

Figure out which one interests you the most and roll with that. They all pay pretty good money.

Engineering is the best long term choice, but its the hardest to go through. Next, I would go into any of the other computer fields, whichever one you enjoy the most. I have had people say they hate security but love programming, or for the people who are more hands on love networking. I would say the easiest would have to be database. Security is probably one of the hardest to get in. Most companies want security dudes who have like 5-7 years at least in security. Usually you go the help desk/sys admin route and get certs until you get a security job. I also feel security will be the biggest long term though.

also consider voip there are lots of jobs there too

first some links

take some time and read through the forums posted this should get you started if you have some computer knowledge and would like to teach yourself at your own pace

I cant say enough about professor messers youtube videos make it easy to do at least your A+ and network+ certifications and there free

if you would like to go through the process faster

5-6 classes and yr and 1/2 and you have a ccna

some hiring mangers say certifications are more important than degrees in the forums linked above

check
indeed.com
and

to see whats going on with jobs

Engineering usually has a co-op which will add a year. But get paid 2/3 times your minimum wage during it.

My friend got into gaming under 4 years of school. Making good money and enjoying it.

My big cousin does this. He was telling me and my brother about it at my wedding 2 weekends ago, boy pulled up in a AMG Benzo so I'm a believer.

Anti-hacker system security type jobs are where I'd go.

I'm tryna put my brother on it now since he's a techie and going to college soon.
