I love how the poll never reflects the responses in these type of threads, barely anyone has stated Illmatic first but it's tied in the lead with RD right now.

Every beat is Dope on that sh*t. memory lane is a weak track? GTFO. One time for your Mind isnt a weak track its just the weakest song on a flawless album. Nas was k!llin the slow Flow

MATW... Most people know that RTD was a carbon copy of what MATW was supposed to be. Depending on how old you are, this will always be about Big vs Pac and Nas vs Jay.

Their all classics (except pac's album) so this is just splitting hairs:

reasonable doubt's "ain't no n*gga" aged badly.

in illmatic, young nas's use of '94's slang and his boom bap dated the album.

ready to die's hardcore rap style was hot in 1994's gangster rap world but that was a fad that died out by the early 00's.

Illmatic - Samples so much funk, soul, and jazz that it sounds outdated by any standards. One of the samples (Thief of Baghdad on Represent) even dates from 1924. Still the greatest rap album of all time, but definitely doesn't sound "modern" production-wise. Nas's lyrics were cutting edge at the time and 18 years later, despite the outdated slang and references, remain of a caliber that most rappers could only dream of achieving.

Reasonable Doubt - Another sample heavy record, Reasonable Doubt uses samples a bit more sparingly than Illmatic and in ways that don't sound "retro" by today's standards, perhaps due to sampling music that is a little more recent (Eric B.&Rakim, Nas, ODB, LL, Tribe Called Quest, etc). Jay's lyricism, while top-notch, is definitely firmly planted in the '90s, alongside other 'mafioso' classics such as Built 4 Cuban Linx. Even Nas's recent release Life is Good seems to be closer in style to Reasonable Doubt than Illmatic.

Ready to Die - In terms of sampling, somewhere in between the modernity of Reasonable Doubt and the antiquity of Illmatic. Modern samples (Snoop, Onyx, Gang Starr) are used alongside retro jazz and funk samples (Mtune, Miles Davis, Isaac Hayes). B.I.G.'s storytelling harkens back to a bevy of NYC artists from the '80s such as Slick Rick, BDP, and Kool G Rap.

Me Against the World - Due to Easy Mo Bee, who also had a big hand in Ready to Die's production, this record is heavy on the Funk samples, however, it lacks the modern samples of Reasonable Doubt and Ready to Die. Due to prodigal mixing engineers, Paul Arnold in particular (who would later go on to mix Christina Aguilera's first hit single), this album actually "sounds" very modern despite the retro samples. Pac DEFINED the culture of the '90s with his lyrics, even more so than Nas/Jay/B.I.G., and he will forever be a.ssociated with the decade.

Ranked (in terms of being the most 'modern' sounding)

1. Reasonable Doubt
2. Me Against the World
3. Ready to Die
4. Illmatic

Pac always sounded dated to me after 2000, I love big but ready to die was one of those albums I played every now and then and only a few songs but Between Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt its a tie I can listen to both of those albums without skipping a song

"Reasonable Doubt"

Barely feels/sounds dated at all...

The other 3 feel definatively like mid 90's Hip Hop.

For me it's Reasonable Doubt and Me Against The World.
Excellent choice esp pac. Pac usually makes timeless music.
Nas illmatic is decent too as far as aging
RTD sounds TOTALLY outdate.
Biggie is talking about Pathfinders/Landcruisers
