I highly doubt this happens. Although Gasol is a better and more efficient offensive player, Smith is way better defensively. I'm pretty sure Mitch Kupchak is on vacation right now.

I'm so sick of the whole "small markets can't compete" BS. Both of the teams in the finals this year were small market teams (yes, Miami is considered a small market, don't let South Beach fool you ). 3 of the 4 teams in the conference finals were small market teams.

LA doesn't always win because they are a big market. We (yes i'm using we) always win because they do what it takes to win. If all you needed to consistently contend was to be a big market why have the knicks sucked for the last decade? Why did Chicago suck for a decade until they got some good draft picks? Boston? Boston sucked for almost 20 years.

To win in the NBA you need a smart front office (Presti, Morey (although he outsmarted himself this summer), Kupchak, Riley...). That's ALL you need. All of this big market small market talk is just fans making excuses for their teams.

And Money isn't an excuse either. Yeah, the lakers have tons of money because of our fan base. But they are willing to spend that money. Which is why we win. And of course there is a certain amount of luck involved. But Cleveland lucked into one of the greatest ball players ever, but because of cheap ownership that refused to pay to get the pieces around Lebron, they never capitalized on that. Guess what, when a team wins Championships, it creates more revenue. Basically cheap teams don't win

It doest matter if it the market itself is small its the players collectively plotting to play together. The heat 3 could of did it in toronto with bosh or cleveland with lebron and it would be the same principle. The fact is there isnt enough parity in the nba for players to join up like this unless the league goes back to having 10 teams like the bill russel era or low 20s like the bird era. And small market teams get stuck with a big contract to keep one star and cant afford to pay the penalties for the hard cap due to less tv contracts and sponsors.

Gasol >> Smith
This, Smith brings absolutely nothing to the table but scoring. Scoring that we don't need, Pau is the best passing big man in the leauge, why trade that for a chucker??????

So you're saying the league should contract some teams? The league is never gonna do that. By doing that, they are reducing their earning potential. There will ALWAYS be terrible teams. That's the way sports is. I think the league should just get rid of the stupid NBA lottery so that way the worst teams actually get the best players like the NFL does and then the league would be "competitive" in about three years.

Man get the fu*k outta here...if they allow this to happen, they need to rid some of the NBA teams to make the talent equal out. This is ridiculous ...

Lakers would be getting the worst of that deal...remember, this is the Pau that everybody said was the best player in the league after the Lakers 2nd of the back to back championships...not everybody of course but a number of notable n*ggas, and kobe haters. Let's not act like they Lakers are getting these dudes for Steve Blake and Matt Barnes.

Mitch would do this for two reasons, to lockup Dwight and to clear cap for the year after next, since Smith is going into his final year on this contract.

fu*k all that the answer is there is no point in 30 teams if all the major talent funnels into a select few teams. Yes the pattern has been there but theres not as much disperse talent in the league these days. If theres going to be 10 great superstar filled teams year in and out, with rookies and role players on the minor league teams whats the point of rooting for impossible odds as a fan.
This is why every league needs a salary cap. Works out really well for the NFL and NHL, lots of parity there. If you look at the sports without caps--baseball, basketball, soccer (in Europe)--they're all fu*ked up and all of them have, give or take, the same teams being powerhouses, and it's all the big market teams. There is actually and interesting point here which is that if we compare capitalism to baseball, basketball, and soccer, we see that free markets actually tend toward wealth accumulation and monopoly, and if we compare socialism to hockey and football, we see that redistribution of wealth tends toward parity to the benefit of all.

meh

cant really say that about baseball. . .the yanks are almost always in it, true, but besides that there is alot of parity

smaller markets like milwaukee, tampa, pittsburgh, cincinatti, oakland have been contenders at some point in the last few years. And really, once youre in the playoffs, anyone has a chance to win it all

btw, lakers need to not do this

the lakers are going to need as many high IQ players as they can get in order to compensate for the lack of smarts coming from the head coach

Well first off even though your wrong me and a number of fans could care less about the nbas earning potential. I would like to see meaningful games in a long a.ss 82 game season instead of not bothering watching because the playoffs were set in free agency. The miami heat are proof that superteams are excellent for business according to the ticket sales and highest tv rating in 20 years last season. The nba should trim the fat and contract to enough teams where the talent is balanced. Who'd really miss the bucks, magic, hornets, wolves, bobcats, nuggets, wizards or grizzlies being punching bags each year, and im a hornets fan.
