Carl Lewis is the greatest Olympian. And the fact phelps doesn't race the 50 or 100 free knocks him down a few pegs. Those are swimmings premier events.

I think what you are missing is that swimming is quite natural. There is a reason people naturally settle near water (more near major bodies/sources of water than not). It's natural (10's of thousands of years) that people harnessed the water, and swimming went along with that.
lol people settled near water because around water is usually where land is more fertile. For instance, land was very fertile near the nile river and in Mesopotamia(Middle East) which is between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and that is the reason early civilizations settled there. You can water crops and such. And they didn't have sophisticated irrigation systems and sh*t back then

we use water to quench thirst...
You are seriously making water sound like it ain't ish, when you'll die from lacking it faster than from food. We use water for so much. OMG.

And again, in parts of America where we are huge on beef, and have lots of processed grains, sure. But it's not always been that way. The locations of the greatest cities in the world weren't chosen because of their land. They were chosen for the water next to them.

Can you swim? Seriously.

but the short distance for running is all about speed...for swimming there is multiple strokes. It's not about who can swim from end to end in the fastest time. It's not just about finding out who's the fastest swimmer in the world. That's totally different than running. Michael Phelps doesn't swim the 1000 meter or 1500 meter swimming events

Carl Lewis was amazing. He was very versatile, and had longevity. He has some serious steroids stuff that's been swept under the rug, but he is in that elite group.

But honestly, if we are getting picky, just about anybody who wins the Decathalon is the best and most versatile athlete in the Olympics.

that's because we developed sophisticated technology which allowed our populations to boom. none of us farm crops or raise cattle, but we all get food from crops. Advanced technology made that possible and is the reason urban areas are more populated than rural ones.

it involves running and jumping...things that are more natural for humans

things that every human does/can do

you can only win 1 medal for basketball though...why the hell can you win like 10 for swimming? that's fu*king ridiculous

How is swimming not natural though ?? you dont need any a.ssistance from any form of technology to do it. The human body was made with arms and legs and that's all you really need to swim, therefore humans by design are able to swim, we're not able to fly by design but we're able to swim.

Humans have been swimming since the beginning of time. Depending on environment , swimming was more essential to survival than running or jumping.

If you had to get your food through spearfishing like this wouldn't swimming skills be essential ??

plus other games like basketball and football heavily involve skills that have even less to do with practicality than swimming ( shooting a ball through a hoop or kicking a field goal )

Why do you think it should be considered a sport?

and we have cars so we dont have to run or walk fast or long to commute. You actually are trying to argue that swimming is obsolete because we have boats ?? Well I guess Henry Ford is responsible for the extinction of having to run long distances to fit certain commutes into our schedule.

Yes, those are about speed. Is all that makes someone an athletic? It's also about mastering a discipline, and fine tuning the body to do so. Is Usain more athletic than the cat who runs the marathon?

That's like saying Larry Bird wasn't ish cuz dude didn't have serious hops or couldn't run as fast as others. That's nonsense.

Michael Phelps, during the last 3 Olympics, was beating guys in their sole discipline and crushing world records. He was essentially like Usain picking up hurdling and middle distance events and setting WR/OR's in other people's primary events. He was that versatile.

You realize that in the grand scheme of things, harvesting grain is pretty new, right? You remember that story about the Indians teaching the Pilgrims how to farm corn? Yea, it's because that stuff wasn't really that commonplace yet. Ironically, the Indians showed them how to use fish to do it.

i don't think there is a 50m in track and field. There is a 60m but I don't think they have that at the olympics. Bolt would still win. I think he was overly cautious because he false started in a previous race.

Phelps still doesn't compete in the 100m freestyle...and why are there Medleys and sh*t? Backstroke? Butterfly? Why not just have events about who can swim the fastest? fu*k is the purpose of those other types of strokes? You can't run multiple ways.
Dude, you are an idiot.

Why are there medleys? The fu*k kinda question is that? You seem to be going out of your way to make up reasons to nullify Phelps achievement because you somehow have something against swimming.

You are one of those fans who thinks they know it all, but really you don't. Swimming is one of the biggest events at the Olympics, and Phelps domination is a multitude of events is basically unprecedented, like seriously, how are you knocking a guy for being good at a multitude of things in his given sport. Does Bolt run long distances, does bolt do hurdles? its like me saying that, why do you even have hurdles? Same fu*king thing, because its another test of skill and Phelps in swimming has mastered more than one stroke, so you gonna downplay that?

fu*k outta here.

Yep, and if you could medal in different parts of basketball, the same player wouldn't win the skills test, that wins the shooting contest, that wins the 3pt contest, etc etc....

All I said was that he wasn't the greatest athlete...you don't have to agree n*gga

Half of his medals come from Medleys...which involve backstroke, and butterfly and sh*t. What is the equivalent of that in track and field. Running backwards? Skipping for 100m?

All I'm saying is his medal count is skewed. He's a beast at swimming and the GOAT at that...but Usain >>>> Phelps son

I'm thinking more like 1 on 1...2 on 2, 3 on 3....sh*t like that

they could have the 3 point contest and what not too...it's not like Phelps wins all the swimming events. Like I said, he doesn't have a gold in the 50 or the 100m freestyle...nor does he do the 1500m and all that sh*t and he just got smashed in the 400IM by Ryan Lochte

that's not swimming's fault

I would love to see a individual 3 point and slam dunk competition in the olympics.

though they probably know that it would just be another event that Team U.S.A. would probably dominate quite often.

but yea dont try to downplay swimming because your favorite sport doesn't have as many events.
