Yeah, the level of competition was much better back in those days and I think the salaries had something to do with that. Players were hungrier, figuratively and literally.

Of course there's no turning back and if anyone has a problem with how much money the players (and owners) make, dont support the product. Simple enough.

Back to the list tho.........

WHY IS MAGIC ALMOST AT THE END OF THE LIST!??!!?!?

Did he have some HIV clause I'm not aware of here?

If I'm not mistaken they swagged him on a 25 million 25 year deal

The whole system is too far out of whack right now. The owners are charging too much for people to buy merch and tickets, and the players are getting overpaid.

I wouldn't even care except the product on the court is dogsh*t compared to what it could be. Look at these olympic games and the way the game is played and you see exactly how much the NBA has perverted the game of basketball.

team apparel for the most part was only sold locally

there are tons of reason all leading up to the overall team not making alot of $ to make these players what they are paid now

It's called inflation. The value of the dollar today is so low.

I understand they were both beasts, but how on earth can they be your favorites, together? I was a huge Bulls/MJ fan as a kid (Born in 86, so I remember quite well) and I absolutely hated Reggie. He was smooth, but I can't fathom having him be one of my favorites alongside the GOAT.

do you understand why

There are short contracts. There are long contracts. And then there's the contract Magic Johnson received in 1981.

After just two seasons, Magic Johnson was already considered one of the most talented players the NBA ever had. It was that level of skill that granted him the the most extensive deal in NBA history, as Jerry Buss handed Magic a 25-year, $25 million contract to stick around with the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal began in 1984, would have ended in 2009, and gave the Lakers' guard $1 million per season.

Johnson became just the third player to earn a million-dollar annual salary, joining fellow L.A. teammate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Houston Rockets forward Moses Malone. Though he had been given largest contract in the history of professional sports, Johnson was a long way from being happy. Only five months later, the franchise player asked to be traded and subsequently forced Buss to fire head coach Paul Westhead.

With the hiring of Pat Riley in Westhead's place, Johnson remained with the Los Angeles Lakers and helped them win multiple titles over the course of the decade. But by the time his contract became active, it was no longer the lucrative mega-deal that it was when he signed it. Players of all sports were now making $2-3 million a year, and his 25-year deal was preventing him from raking in the cash. He later renegotiated his deal and resumed make top dollar like everyone else.

most players like magic signed deals and had to renegotiate them thats why players were making as much as they were in 92

n*ggas these days can thank Glen Robinson for being able to get paid out the a.ss and make outrageous demands for contracts.

Fans can also thank him and KG for making their ticket prices skyrocket so owners could still afford to pay the players and not go in the hole.

No matter what fans lose every time.
