I disagree on the net offer being better. But thats revisionist history. Favors has done nothing but when he was moved he was seen as future star so thats ok.
As far as what moves could be done without Melo, their is of course the Howard deal. Now this goes back to did ty sign or didnt he. It also goes by does howard want to be a knick etc. Also you have cp3. Now if Melo wasnt here would he be pushing to be a knick? Who knows. The point is we don't know what options wouldve been available to us if the deal did not go through. All we know for certain is we had greater flexibility. For instance a guy like Landrys value was much higher than, Gallo had some nice value and if they continued playing well and making big time strides who knows what we could've got for them.
Could we of gotten as big a name as Melo? Highly doubtful. Could we of put together a team that couldve won more than 1 playoff games in two years? I think so.
the noh offer for cp3 was better than anything we could have offered so that wasn't really an option even if he tried to push his way here considering the fact that stern voided a much better LAL offer to get him to noh.
same applies to the dwight deal because bynum or houstons offer(which includes torontos pick with limited protection) would still trump any combination of gallo and mediocre picks we could throw at orlando.
and the chances of landry fields and or gallo increasing their value to a point where they do become good enough trade chips to put us in position to make these moves is another stretch because both of their struggles had a lot more to do with their own game than it did with fitting in to the roster we had. during the lockout fields tried to change his shot and he completely fu*ked it up and took away any arc he had on it. gallinari on the other hand is a decent player but he's remained injury prone and underachieving.
and the idea that this teams playoff failures in the last two years being an indicator of anything is a joke. not only have both those teams been decimated by injuries(jared jeffries was our second best player during the celtic series and 80% of our starting lineup was unhealthy for the heat series) but the team had a gimmick coach weighing down the roster for years.
