The Official Brad "The Real Deal" Beal Summer League Thread

Comcast SportsNet announced a three-game NBA Summer League broadcast Monday which will cover the Friday debut of Washington Wizards rookie Bradley Beal as well as the final two games of Washington's five-game schedule in Las Vegas, Nevada. NBATV subscribers will have access to all five games.*

Friday, July 13

Wizards @ Hawks

CSN: 4:00 p.m. ET (live) | 7:00 p.m. ET

NBATV: 4:00 p.m. ET (live) | 2:00 p.m. ET (Sat, 7/14)

Atlanta entered the 2012 NBA Draft with six free agents, including former Wizards guard Kirk Hinrich. The Hawks bolstered their roster with shooting guard John Jenkins (No. 23) and power forward Mike Scott (No. 43) but they still have a long way to go. They're a team that should benefit from the Summer League perhaps more so than other teams in the league.

Saturday, July 14

Wizards @ Rockets

NBATV: 10:00 p.m. ET (live) | 12:00 p.m. ET (Sun, 7/15)

Unlike the Hawks, the Rockets have a roster full of potential talent. They gave up on a few key pieces in small forward Chase Budinger and point guard Goran Dragic but they acquired a shooter in Jeremy Lamb, a point forward in Royce White, and an athletic, defensive-minded big in Terrence Jones.

Sunday, July 15

Wizards @ D-League Select Team

NBATV: 9:00 a.m. ET (live)

It's difficult to speculate what the final D-League Select Team will look like, as it's an All-Star team of sorts comprised of the entire NBA D-League talent pool. The team should be announced by Wednesday night, once the NBA passes its current moratorium period. It'll be the first time the Wizards have ever faced the D-League Select Team, which formed during the 2009 NBA Summer League.

Tuesday, July 17

Wizards vs. Grizzlies

CSN: 6:00 p.m. ET (live) | 8:00 p.m. ET

NBATV: 6:00 p.m. ET (live)

The Grizzlies tried their hand at former Wizard Gilbert Arenas last season but he wasn't quite there in terms of conditioning. Memphis is still searching for an extra shooter or two to bolster what they have in Rudy Gay. The Griz acquired Tony Wroten, Jr. (No. 25), a combo-guard who isn't at the level of Arenas but might do the trick over the short term. Memphis, like Atlanta, would be wise to make the most out of their summer league stretch, as they have a lot of dollars invested in veterans and little wiggle room to test newcomers.

Wednesday, July 18

Wizards @ Bucks

CSN: 4:00 p.m. ET (live) | 7:00 p.m. ET

NBATV: 4:00 p.m. ET (live) | 12:00 p.m. ET (Thu, 7/19)
If you're a fan of John Wall then the Bucks present one of the best match-ups--assuming both Wall and Milwaukee counterpart Brandon Jennings decide to suit up--the NBA has to offer. Jennings has the edge on Wall thus far, whether you consider NBA games, exhibition games from last summer, basically any kind of NBA-level competition. Will Wall--assuming he plays--step up to Jennings--assuming he plays?

Other than the Wall-Jennings angle, the Bucks have two new studs in the elite, defensive-minded big John Henson (No. 14) and sharpshooter Doron Lamb (No. 42). Lamb may want to prove something this summer as well, as the Wizards left him on the board with their No. 32 pick. We'll see if that comes back to bite them.

The Wizards completed the morning session of Day Three of a four-day minicamp on Wednesday afternoon at Verizon Center. Rookie shooting guard Bradley Beal took a few moments to talk about what he's learned in the past couple of days.

“We've been polishing up on everything, learning a few new plays, a few new defensive schemes as well. It's really just all a learning process. I think we're going to be ready come Friday [when the team heads to Las Vegas].

Defensively, what type of team will the Wizards summer-league squad be?

“I guess really more half-court. He [coach Randy Wittman] makes the point guards pick up on full-court. Other than that, we're just going to play solid defense and make sure we're talking and know what we're doing on certain screen and rolls and things like that. Other than that it's pretty simple, nothing out of the ordinary.”

How hard are the two-a-days?

“I felt sore. My legs are really k!lling me. But it's all just a part of it. If you want to be at this level, that's what it's going to take. We all have to put in the time and effort. If coach wants to go two-a-days, we have to to go two-a-days. We can't complain about it or not show up or anything like that. It's only going to help us get better, and we have a lot of stuff to learn in a short period of time, so I think these two-a-days will help us.”

Excited to play real games?

“Super excited, honestly, just to get the feel for the game, the speed of it, the pace of it. I haven't played five-on-five since my last college game.

Advice from John Wall? [Wall was voted Most Outstanding Player during his rookie summer-league season].

“It's really just trying to help my team. As long as I'm coming out hard and competing and making sure than I'm doing what I'm supposed to do.”

How do the players balance team and individual needs?

“It's been fine, actually. Everybody has been playing together. Nobody is showing any signs of selfishness. I think it will carry over into summer-league as well. I think we're all together in one unit. The coach put together a good team because everybody's character and attitude is encouraging and everybody is playing hard and playing together. I know everybody's trying to make the team, but I think they can make the team by showing what they're capable of doing and playing together. If they're selfish, they're going to stick out and they won't look good at all.”

Whose two-a-days are tougher, Randy Wittman's or [Florida coach] Billy Donovan's?

“I'd probably say Billy, because Billy makes us run more, but these are pretty tough also, because it's back-to-back-to-back. You get after it. But it's kind of hard to choose between the two.

Are you becoming more familiar with Chris [Singleton], Shelvin [Mack] and Jan [Vesely]?

“Most definitely, especially Shelvin, more than any of the other guys. But all three of those guys have really just taken me under their wing so to speak. I really like that, and they're really just teaching me and just getting to know me, and I think the bond is there already. The chemistry is there as well, so I'm really looking forward to playing with them.”

Yeah, Beal the kid with no injury history. On the other hand, fatass Sullinger gonna break his back soon as he steps on the court

Chemistry lessons for Wizards’ Bradley Beal in summer school

[pic - click to view]

Bradley Beal stood at the top of the key and drained jumper after jumper. It was the second day of the Wizards’ minicamp, and practice session No. 3 was coming to a close.

The Wizards will have two-a-day sessions from Monday through Wednesday, with a single session Thursday before the team heads to Las Vegas to begin summer-league play.

Beal, who turned 19 on June 28, the day Washington drafted him with the third overall pick, wasn’t fazed by the schedule — he was more than ready to get things started.

“I’m very impatient,” he said. “It’s a learning process at the same time so there are a lot of things I have to learn, a lot of adjustments I have to make. I’m really just trying to learn quick and really just to fit into the system as best as I can.”

Beal averaged 14.8 points in his only season at Florida and is expected to help improve the Wizards’ lackluster offense. It’s a lot of pressure for a rookie but something Beal fully expected the moment he arrived in Washington.

“I’ve got to hit the ground running,” Beal said. “That’s just the type of person I am anyway. I don’t want to come in and just be laid-back and let things happen.”

One of the first hurdles all rookies face, and what Beal knows he must prepare for, is adjusting to the pace of the NBA.

“The speed is very different, the physicality is different as well,” Beal said. “Coach [Randy Wittman] expects us to play hard every possession, never take any possessions off. There a lot of things I have to adjust to, but I think I’ll be fine.”

Wittman is pleased with what he’s seen from his shooting guard so far but cautions that Beal is just getting started.

“I liked what I saw in terms of him picking up,” Wittman said. “We threw a lot of things at these guys strictly for that, to see who can handle it and who can’t. He’s got great confidence in who he is, and he came out there [Monday] like he knew what he was doing.

“But,” the coach added jokingly, “he didn’t have a clue what he was doing, if that makes any sense.”

In the early practice sessions, the team worked on drills and half-court work. The evening sessions were devoted to five-on-five scrimmages.

Having teammates Shelvin Mack, Chris Singleton and Jan Vesely as part of the minicamp and summer-league roster will help Beal begin to develop some on-court chemistry.

Beal and Mack already have begun the process of getting to know each other.

"We text all the time." Beal said.
