Kevin Garnett to the Los Angeles Lakers: 5 Reasons it Would Make Sense

[pic - click to view]

COMMENTARY | Kevin Garnett is proving himself to be an absolute beast in the 2012 NBA playoffs, as evidenced by his outstanding Game 5 performance (26 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks) against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have to be at least intrigued by the possibility of acquiring a player like the Boston Celtics' star power forward, who will be an unrestricted free agent following the postseason.

Questions about his age have come up frequently in the last few years, especially when it comes to his effectiveness as a primary component of an aging team. But one thing that's never been in question is his passion for the game and heart.

That's why Lakers' brass have to explore the possibility of bringing in KG via a sign-and-trade involving Pau Gasol. The Spaniard has all but worn out his welcome in Los Angeles, and even though his skill set is unique, it's likely that he and the team will part ways.

With that in mind, here are five reasons why Kevin Garnett would be a good fit in Los Angeles:

Andrew Bynum

Assuming Los Angeles hangs on to Andrew Bynum and decides to build around him, and it appears as if they will following Lakers' executive Jim Buss's recent comments, Garnett won't have to be nearly as prolific on both ends of the floor due to the presence of a legitimate All-Star 7-footer next to him.

More importantly, he could move back to his natural position of power forward and play fewer minutes in preparation for the postseason, when his team would need him most.

In Boston, he was asked to do more than he otherwise would with Bynum in the frontcourt alongside him. Perhaps some of his emotion and fire could rub off on the 24-year-old who is known for the tendency to dog it.

Speaking of intensity, more on that shortly.

Age is Only a NumberůSort of

Garnett is now 36 years old and on the downside of his career. How does this make him a good fit for the Lakers, a team that needs to get younger?

Right now, Kobe Bryant needs players around him who know how to win. Bryant is a player in his own regard that is climbing well into his 30s and will see a steady decline in athleticism and production as he ages.

What that all equates to is that the Black Mamba era in Los Angeles is nearly finished, and Garnett's remaining effectiveness could mesh well with Bryant's. The Lakers could re-tool with younger pieces around Bynum as the two legends each try to finish their careers on top.

Intensity

Here's where Kevin Garnett is unmatched by anyone in the league -- he plays with unparalleled intensity and passion. Expletives aside, KG is a shining example of how to play the game hard and pour every bit of emotion into it. He's made a career out of proving people wrong, and would undoubtedly be motivated by those who would say the Lakers have no chance at a title with him.

Championship Pedigree

If the Celtics have shown anything in the 2012 NBA Playoffs, it's that having the understanding of what it takes to be a champion is priceless. Clearly, it trumps pure talent as demonstrated by the Heat's inability to win a game that they had to have at home in Game 5.

Having been there before, Garnett has the know-how to win titles. So does Bryant. Again, the window for winning would already be small with respect to No. 24, but that's a fact independent of whether or not Garnett would be on the roster.

Entertainment Value

Finally, entertainment is still what the NBA is all about,. In Los Angeles, it's a major draw for southern California fans that have a variety of distractions to choose from when it comes to sports and recreation.

Kevin Garnett is the most entertaining NBA player to watch, and it's not even close. The intensity coupled with the skill set and all-out style of play is what makes KG still live up to the 'Big Ticket' moniker after 17 years in the league.

No one does it with more fire or more flair than Garnett has on a nightly basis throughout his career. With the high-flying Los Angeles Clippers playing in the same building, the Lakers need someone else fans will pay to see aside from Kobe. Kevin Garnett is that type of guy.

I think he would be a good pick up for a team that needs to fill that PF position. He is defiantly still one of the best in the game. I like how he yell at his teammates and plays aggressive.
