Dirk Nowitzki Wants Other Superstars to Join Him in Dallas

The OKC Thunder put an end to the Dallas Mavericks’ season in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, sweeping the defending NBA champions in emphatic fashion. And despite the inevitable sadness, there was a sense around the Mavs that this season was always about the future for them.

No matter what team owner Mark Cuban may claim, the Mavericks never really put their best foot forward — on the court, or in the front office — and the sense was that they were setting themselves up for a roster upgrade, beginning next season.

Dirk Nowitzki realizes that he needs other top-notch talent alongside him going forward. Per the Dallas Morning News:

It is believed that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn’t re-sign Tyson Chandler , J.J. Barea and DeShawn Stevenson because he wanted the salary cap space to make a run at a couple of stars to pair with Dirk Nowitzki. However, Cuban has said he isn’t necessarily trying to acquire both Williams and Howard, claiming he could spread the cap room around among several star players instead of two superstars.

But listening to Nowitzki’s comments following Saturday’s season-ending loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the franchise’s greatest player is hoping for superstars. “We need some guys that can make plays for themselves,” Nowitzki said. “That’s pretty obvious. If you look at all the top teams now, they have at least two-three guys they can throw the ball to and they do their thing.” Nowitzki then specifically mentioned how Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden each carried a Thunder team on different nights in the four-game sweep of the Mavericks. “If you want to be an elite team in the league right now, you have to have 2-3 guys that can go off at any time,” Nowitzki added.

Mark Cuban has been pretty consistent with his claims that he’s not obsessed with the idea of signing a superstar (or two) this summer, preaching smart use of the new CBA rules instead. It remains to be seen if Dirk Nowitzki will buy into this philosophy.

so if he did it when he was out of his prime it would be no problem. So carmello cries his way to ny. Dwight is going bi polar in orlando. Kobe cried on radio saying he played his last game in LA because they weren't helping him by bringing in the right talent. Peirce needed 2 other hofs to win a chip. But lebron is a follower? Ok please die.

Players can't redo their contracts. That never made it into the CBA. Dallas has enough cap space to go after 1 max player and will probably go after D.Will but with $30M more being offered in BK I doubt he leaves. If he doesn't then Dallas should just size guys to make a 2-3 year run. They have enough cap space to go after Nash, KG and G.Wallace. That sure would be a crazy team to compete with in the West the next 2-3 years.

Stop it guys. Dwight never wanted to go to dallas. It was just a throw off team on his list because he didn't wanna look like a big market wh0ore who doesn't care about winning. Plus he wanted the nets to beef up their offer to orlando. His agent was never really in contact with dallas and was more focused with the nets and lakers.

Plus dwight had convos with kobe and deron. He never had convos with dirk

Kidd wasn't D-ing up the likes of Durant, Kobe and Dwade throughout the playoffs

Knocking down clutch 3's

Runnin the offense... That is an absurd statement

Who has he made better? Guys like devin harris deshawn stevenson jason terry josh howard etc etc. Dirk has never played with a superstar that was in his prime besides steve nash who's a horrible fit for Dirk cause both nash and dirk are slow footed white guys who don't play defense.
