hes not saying that soul singers dont exist anymore

hes saying that the big r&b artists dont sing soul anymore and rather sing pop because thats what sells

thats the reason people be sleepin on cats like raphael saadiq
PPl Dont Read sh*t. They dont like the person so they attack the Message.

Sure you have Kem Anthony Hamilton Jill Scott etc. But they are not getting the big Sales or Radio Play.

I think music as a whole R&B and Rap has gotten more Pop.

n*gga lookin for some attention. in the past six months we got Jill Scott, Marsha Ambrosious, and Mary J. Blige. not to mention Kem and i think Anthony Hamilton is on the way
And in the past six months, how well have those artists sold? Are they on the hot97 rotation all day? Used in commercials? You can have good soul coming out but if it only gets listened to by the adult contemporary r&b station (you'll hear in the AM: tom joyner, steve harvey, etc) what can they do? You know Kem is thinking he can sing circles around jeremiah, trey, the weekend but the powers that be want the kids singing and dancing to their pop flops.

Sucks but true.

Who is Jill Scott...what about Musiq Soulchild...does Anthony Hamilton not exist...Ledisi, Kelly Price, Kem, Lela James, Will Downing, Lalah Hathaway, etc, etc...

Some of the best music has a "niche" audience. Who cares about "mainstream" success as long as you are true to your art form.

and we all know a mass of people are generally followers.. and are not smart enuff to think for themselves... so mainstream is way less "relevant" than it really is.. but I think artist with some integrity given that platform make way to allow education for the masses of ignorant people..which is what labels don't want period.. a smart consumer

But I thought the real money was made with tours. Now Beyonce & Rihanna may do major tours but the majority of "pop" black singers will not make bank like that.

I would think Jill Scott would garner a larger crowd (and a more affluent crowd that can pay higher ticket prices) than a Trey Songz.

Plus, the black soul artists may not garner Bey's & Rhianna's tour money now BUT they will probably come out even when you think of the longevity of a soul artists' career. My a.ssessment only includes money made in relation to music (loreal contracts do not count)

if you're under the age of 23, you shouldn't even comment in this thread.. you have to have some knowledge of good music, and to be able to compare it to something else..

Dream is right.. GOOD music, whether its R&B or hip hop, doesn't get promoted anymore.. hip hop was on the decline a LONG time ago, and now it has finally hit R&B as well... Common never got any air time, the Roots only if they dropp'd a basslined beat, Kweli got airtime on a Kanye beat...

now R&B got all these club hits, no songs really show off a vocalists vocal range anymore... all this engineer heavy tracks.. i don't even fu*k wit the Dream, but i agree wit the statement..

-.-

The only pain I feel for Drakes is the fact that he thinks his music is good. And the fact that he gets turned down by every woman he comes in contact with. He is like the socially awkward college student. 2 years from now, Drake will commit suicide. Bank on it.

Yall n*ggas just focusing on the fact that yall dont like The Dream so yall refuse to say he's right. Sad part is most of yall havent heard any of his music besides the sh*t he makes for the radio. He's right though. Black soul dont sell no more. You can name all the Anthony Hamiltons and Jill Scotts you want but that sh*t aint selling. Beyonce released a great album last year, with alot more soul than her albums usually have. You know what happened? Her fanbase & critics hated it because it wasn't the usual pop, upbeat Beyonce they wanted to hear. She made a real R&B album but thats not what people wanted to hear from her. Thats why our artists go the pop route.

Sidenote: Trey Songz is actually making good R&B right now. People say he only talks about s3x which is false. All his songs that get radioplay are about s3x, because s3x sells. But his last album really had alot of nice songs that weren't all about s3x. He's the only young, relevant R&B artist out right now that hasn't made a pop album, even though its probably mainly because the n*gga cant dance to no pop beats like Chris Brown or Usher.

I been saying thos for years tho. Adele seems to be the only female vocalist out now that has soul. Bruno mars is the only male too bad he's a fu*kin f*ggot.
Maybe in your little corny area of the world that's true.

Us Black folks got plenty of Soul singers that have actual Soul and just because they don't sell a billion records doesn't mean they don't exist.

The Elvis/Emenim/Adele sh*t is just an imitation it doesn't have the essence and it never will.

Absolutely right. Black people (for the most part) are not listening to any type of soul music. They don't wanna hear that sh*t. The white girls and guys do for some reason. Go to a jazz club in the city and see who's there. White hipsters. People refuse to believe the music is the product of the environment. Not the other way around.

theres no more originality in r&b
you got trey songz trying to sound like r kelly
you got like 5 n*ggas trying to sound like the-dream
and the song content is a.ss cheeks
no substance at all
Its always been rare that a new R&B artist didnt sound like someone that came before them, its nothing wrong with that though as long as the music is good.

They'll market whatever people will buy. A white soul singer is more interesting to see than a black soul singer because it's not common and hipsters love it. You didn't think labels tried marketing soul to blacks these days? It doesn't work. Blacks who listen to soul will find their soul music, and it probably won't be from Adele. Labels will market what sells. And black soul music does not sell. It does not sell. It just does not sell.
