We cautioned that Carmelo Anthony would be Stephon Marbury 2.0 [NYdailynews]

disclaimer...these are not my thoughts just posting an article in today's paper

I really don’t want to be writing this column. Deep down, I wished for every Knick fan that this moment wouldn’t come. And I badly, badly wanted to be wrong.

But like the big brother who tells his sis that the dude with the Satan-worship tattoo and the player rep is not Mr. Right, I just couldn’t help being right. And it’s with a similar blend of regret, here’s-a-box-of-tissues sympathy, and, yes, the slightest tinge of satisfaction, that I say what I must.

From Mike D’Antoni’s departure to Melo’s struggles to the struggle just to make the playoffs, I saw this Knick season in shambles coming like a Jeremy Lin turnover. Got proof, too.

Exactly 51 weeks ago to the day, I warned that the Carmelo Anthony-Knicks marriage wouldn’t work. The early moments of his Garden party had all the hallmarks of the horrible Stephon Marbury deal. One day, everyone would see the diva who ran out of the locker room after a loss to Detroit last season, and all the cheers for Melo would transform into boos.

“Meet Stephon Marbury 2.0” is how I so eloquently put it, and “Beware the dark age,” I cautioned. And today, all those Knicks fans who now boo Melo during pregame introductions at a pricier MSG see my point. You can’t blame fans, because Carmelo’s brief tenure in New York has hardly been stellar. Sure, there was a four-game playoff cameo last April (just like Marbury’s Knick start), but that’s been followed by a Marbury-esque flatline.

What happened to fitting in and not needing to do all the scoring, and all those brilliant things he said when he first came to the Big Apple? It went the way I expected, and was nothing more than talk.

Instead, Melo’s led — and I use that term lightly — the Knicks to a 20-24 record entering Saturday’s night’s action, and they’re f!ghting and scrapping for the right to lose to the Heat as the Eastern Conference’s eighth seed. And while he never outright feuded with his coach, Anthony’s one-on-one style certainly did clash with D’Antoni’s free-flowing offensive philosophy.

Coach-killer, a la Marbury? Tentatively check that box. You don’t think D’Antoni would have walked away from the Knicks with 24 games left on his contract if he thought he could make it work, do you? But D’Antoni had to understand that it would never work when he watched his Knicks go 7-1 with Melo sidelined in February, then go 3-8 as soon as he returned to action.

“I think he was a little frustrated by the fact that everyone wasn’t buying into his system,” Amar’e Stoudemire said of D’Antoni after the coach abruptly resigned last week.
Call it a hunch (and I’m pretty good with hunches, as we know), but Stat’s “everyone” didn’t refer to Josh Harrelson and Jared Jeffries. It referred to Anthony, the one-dimensional, ball-stopping scorer who just never wanted to fit into D’Antoni’s offense, the player who at least one Knick official wanted gone before the just-passed trade deadline.

So, now Melo is on his second coach in his second season — just like Marbury — and he’s in danger of missing the playoffs, just like Marbury. Sure, there’s still time for him to turn this all around, for Melo to go from selfish to sharing, for James Dolan to stop playing GM, and for the Knicks to ascend.

But for now, a very sympathetic part of me means it when I say that I hate to say I told you so.

He actually does a good job of his comparison and getting across the point he wants to get across. Whether it actually is true or should be taken seriously is up to his readers.
