I must be living on a different planet to you. Where I'm from a tip is a gratuity, an optional reward for a service. It's not mandatory, and not giving one doesn't come with the potential of receiving a bad service. In contrast what you're talking about is not tipping, what you describe is bribery.

Your actions aren't charitable. What's charitable when the tip is expected, when it's for all intents and purposes a mandatory action? If I give a tip where I'm from I am being charitable, if you give a tip it sounds you're doing so to ensure your barber doesn't maliciously ruin your hair, or the waiter doesn't spit in your food.

If your man Bruce isn't making enough money and depends on tips then he could quite easily raise his prices, surely?
No, no, no... I'm not saying that I tip the guy because he might fu*k my hair up out of malice. I'm saying that I revere the dude for doing such a good job every time, and for the good conversation we usually have while I'm in there. I like the guy, and I guess you could say that by tipping, I'm emphasizing to the guy that I respect the importance of the service he offers. To me, it's worth it. I'm not bribing him. I'm tipping him.

And no, the dude doesn't rely on tips. I just do it out of respect, because I feel like it.

All I'm trying to say is that it's really not that ridiculous of an idea to tip your barber.

I don't see how that's a problem with my argument. Markets would dictate that if there's no tipping the better employees would receive raises, or find themselves working in better-paying establishments. The same is true with every other profession on earth. You're able to make great money doing what you do because you're good at what you do, your employers recognise this and are willing to pay you more. If you weren't good at what you did then maybe you'd be on less money, perhaps you'd be on minimum wage.

The people who see good money from tips would see good money without tips, because their skill and ability would be realised over someone who isn't that good at waiting. It works like this in Europe and Asia, I can't see why it wouldn't in America. Good waiters get good jobs, waiters who aren't very good get jobs and wages that aren't very good, generally. It's not perfect, but that's what happens in a Capitalist system with a focus on individual greed.

Nobody is saying don't tip, what's being said to tip-reliant people is to wake up to who's the bad guy and who isn't. People who oppose tipping aren't the enemy.

If I'm in a country and it's customary to tip then I will do, because as you say I'd be victimising the wrong people. But shouldn't you be putting that argument to the numerous waiters or tip-reliant staff in this thread and in general who do exactly what you say? They gloat that they'll victimise customers if they fail to tip, when their grievances should be with their employer and the system, not the customer. It works both ways, and seems far more relevant for the tip-nazis who threaten to tamper with peoples food if someone doesn't pay them a good tip, than for me. I tip often, but my tips are borne of genuine appreciation and kindheartedness as opposed to feeling guilt-tripped to do so because it's the done thing.
I can dig what you're saying, but at the end of the day the employees don't have the leverage to force their employers to change the system. They would if somehow they organized strikes en mass, but I think we can both agree that that's never going to happen. So, it is what it is... Ya know?

As someone who was fortunate enough to go to college and get a degree, I can say this banker represents everything wrong with the 3 class system in place right now. I know I am more fortunate than most and appreciate everything I've ever received, this as*hole acts like anyone can hop up and land a job like that. Unless the service is beyond fu*king terrible I ALWAYS tip, only cheap d!ckheads don't. Most times waiters get paid like 2-4 bucks an hour and rely on tips to make a decent wage. Even then in many places the tips are divided between every waiter, not just the one who personally serves you... people in this thread who don't tip are probably broke as fu*k.

I did receive scholarship money and will be paying student loans until I'm about 30, but not everyone is in a spot where they can do that. It would be easy for me to point and say "Hey get off your a.ss and go to school, I did it." Truth is I don't have a family to take care of or a child. For all anyone knows this waiter could be 18 years old taking care of his brothers and sisters working 3 jobs. And many times a degree isn't enough, I have friends I went to college with who have masters in various fields and work at fu*king target or burger king.... job market sucks d!ck even if you do have a degree these days.

Thats some ignorant sh*t right there....

These waiters make below minimum wage and rely on tips and broke n*ggas like you send them back and forth for napkins and bottles of ketchup then leave without tipping. Next time you sit down at a restaurant, especially one you dont tip at....just know that they spit in whatever you ordered

Bunch of bitter minimum wage workers here i see.

I don't tip, period. If you want money go out and get a real job, get the food myself? gladly, give me that option and i will, why? because i am not a lazy piece of sh*t, i am not paying you for a job you are already be paid for, is it my fault that you get sh*t pay? no, only job you can get? bullsh*t.

Am i rich? no, but attacking someone who has money is just bitter, childish, ignorant and makes you look like a f*ggot. Not everyone believes you deserve tips.

Let them spit, further proving my point in how childish and ignorant these people are, isn't my fault they are high school drop outs who can't hold a real fu*king job, why should i tip them? because they walk 15 feet to bring me a plate of food? HOLY sh*t THAT IS SOME WORK! MUST OF CLIMBED A fu*kING MOUNTAIN TO BRING ME THAT BURGER.

Like i said i would gladly walk to the back and get my own food, and for all you know this bi*ch was a horrible waiter, then what? its ok to not tip a sh*tty waiter? but a good one? tip less? tip more? these places should be forced to pay these people money, we the tax payers shouldn't be forced into making the difference and there is a reason why you aren't forced to pay it.

like the man said get a REAL job.

It's not your obligation to tip someone, because they decided to work a minimum wage job. It sounds harsh but, thats not my problem. A Tip is supposed to be for exceptional/good quality service, which is a requirement for any job regardless of the pay im pretty sure. If I dont want to tip, I dont have to. Plain and simple. If you choose to, that you, but dont try to put people down because they choose not to. It has nothing to do with being broke or cheap. We all have our own problems.

i don't tip on take out orders. nothing was done. my food was made and i paid for it. what's the tip for? i do however always tip bartenders/servers when i sit down at least 20% no matter what, 15% if the service wasn't up to par. if you can't afford a few extra bucks then you shouldn't be eating out. of all the places to penny pinch you wanna do it at the restaurant you just dropped 40 bucks? makes no sense to me

no, but the tips of servers are their paycheck. my girlfriend was a server, her actual paychecks for a week we about 12 dollars. they rely on tips. it's the same as a person that relies on commission.

So I have to give someone a tip now, for them to provide good service?
I thought good service was expected of EVERYONE with ANY job dipsh*t.
You make no sense, first you establish that a tip is not mandatory yet you attack me because I chose not to tip. Like I said, I am not the reason you are working that job, so it is not my responsibility to make sure you walk away with some money in your pocket. If you dont like it, then leave and get a new job. I never said I never tip, I just dont tip all the time. If I feel like you deserve a tip, then I will tip

This is the reason I got out of the restaurant industry. Its the people that are in this thread. You go to a restaurant and pay for your meal, you dont pay for your service. The tip is the hard work that the server puts into making sure that everything goes smoothly with your meal, and that you get it in a timely fashion. Making sure that you and your guests have a good time and that you dont have to worry about anything. Ensuring that when you ask for more ketchup or more water in your glass you get it. The reason McDonalds and Burger King dont get tipped is because they arent allowed to.

You can say go get a real job or go to school, but what if your job is serving tables so you an put yourself through school? What if that server who is waiting on you is stressing on finals and a full time school schedule and stressing already to the max? What if that server is a single parent who is doing what they can to feed their family?

Some of you guys are ridiculous saying get a real job, or that the company is paying them min wage, when in reality they have to deduct from their paycheck based on their tips. When you dont tip, it actually comes out of the servers paycheck.

Dont fu*king spend money to eat out at a restaurant if you cant afford to tip your waiter. Go to McDonalds and Burger King and experience that grade-A service. I cant believe some of you bi*ch a.ss n*ggas really think its cool/ok to not tip.

You are an idiot. You are paying for your food cost. By accepting tips and willing to serve you, servers are taking a hit on their pay cut. Good service is expected, but you have someone waiting on you for 30mins to 2 hours depending on where you go. Where else do you go for that long and not tip? You spend 40-50 bucks on a meal you could make at home for 10 but you cant drop the extra 10 to have some one refill your drinks, bring your food out to hot, clean your table? GTFOH. You are a bi*ch for real...
