Jerry Jones intends to use his salary cap space (CARL NICKS??)

The salary cap is a fluid situation in the NFL.

The Cowboys have $12.6 million under the cap and that's before the team restructures any deals or cuts any of their current players. The team also has $28 million in dead money based on numerous players who were released last summer such as Leonard Davis, Marion Barber, Marc Colombo among others.

Stephen Jones, the executive vice president, and his staff did a good job of creating cap space so the $28 million of dead money won't bother the Cowboys in terms of making moves when free agency starts in March.

"We've done an outstanding job. I give Stephen a lot of credit," Jerry Jones said. "This is a year we thought it would be Armageddon for us - this year. But we were able to do some things with the cap that gives us a chance to have some room to improve this team this year. And we will use it."

There are other moves the Cowboys can do, including triggers that turn the base salaries of Doug Free and Orlando Scandrick into signing bonus lowering their base salaries and saving the team about $8.6 million. When free agency starts the Cowboys could have nearly $20 million in cap space, enough to sign a highly-priced free agent such as New Orleans' guard Carl Nicks and a veteran backup quarterback.

I hope u don't consider Nicks or Grubbs a blockbuster name because one of those two are a necessary addition this offseason.

Also need Finnegan or Grimes.

An Offensive Guard named Carl Nicks is considered a s3xy blockbuster deal?

People gonna buy more season tickets saying "I can't wait to watch Nicks pull on a sweep!!!!!"

Na the parameters are set its the details holding up the deal like Workout Bonuses,Guaranteed Money etc. Thats usually the hardest part about these big deal contracts, the details, trying to make them cap friendly. GMs have to make it work for both the player and the team salary cap. I have no doubt Brees will be here and he wont be franchised. Saints will do the right thing and make him the highest paid player in the NFL.

He wont do that and he shouldn't because he's already done it. He outperformed his initial deal(6 yr 60 mill) after year four of that deal. He should have gotten a new deal after winning the SB in '09. He should not take less to make sure others get signed imo. Loomis is a good GM and I know he'll get it done with Brees, Nicks, and Colston.

Colston is not a 50 mill WR, teams need to beware of that also that knee is a slight issue. Its hard to say what his market is right now. He has thrived in this system since day one as a rookie with Brees. I dont wanna say he's a system WR, but this system works for him and its hard to imagine him in another offense. Not saying he cant beast somewhere else, but I hope its here. IMO his market is somewhere around 30-35 mill for 5 years with 15-17 guaranteed.
