What was wrong about what I said? You really think Kobe going to walk away that easy? All he knows is the NBA, he's spent almost over half his life in the NBA.. He probably wont retire for another 3-4 years or at least until he passes MJ on the scoring record.

Mayo is 24 right now if you didn't know and he's not a PG by any means.
i was laughing because i can picture kobe taking vet minimum and somehow talking his way into a starting role

if we were still running the triangle, like we should be, then he'd be perfect. now I don't know. it don't really make sense to bring him off the bench, but neither him or Kobe are points. regardless he'd make the lakers more athletic and give the lakers a legitimate player to build around.

im 99% sure its been said within grizzlies management that OJ stays, atleast until the off season. he is on fire right now and is a reason the grizzlies are winning. let me see if i can find that article i read.....

I've put out of my mind that O.J. Mayo (right) will be traded this season, and so should you.

The reality is the Grizzlies keep getting offers for Mayo and the front office is playing defense like its players. Memphis leads the NBA in steals and its clear that this franchise isn't about to let another team steal Mayo this season.

Yes, it's true that the Grizzlies had serious talks with the New Jersey Nets about sending Mayo there for Anthony Morrow. A separate Nets deal on the table was Mayo for Jordan Farmar, a pick and cash. But none of those trade proposals are the nobrainers that it would take to pry away Mayo from the Griz this season.

With the Grizzlies in a "win now" mode, there is a view among decision makers that dealing Mayo could sacrifice this season. Not only is Mayo finally playing to his potential as a Sixth Man, having emerged as a serious three-point threat, but the Griz aren't nearly as concerned as one would think about how Mayo might impact their future financially.

None of this is to say that Mayo will wear a Grizzlies uniform next season. It's still right to believe that Memphis isn't in a position to offer Mayo the lucrative contract and/or starting role he's seeking in a new deal. The Griz have already invested big-time in Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Mike Conley plus Tony Allen is the starting shooting guard with another year left on his deal.

But it's clear to me now that the Griz aren't the least bit motivated to trade Mayo. I'll be shocked if he doesn't finish the season in Memphis.

No, Mayo and the Grizzlies will not agree to a contract extension by Wednesday's deadline. But there is a little-known element in the new collective bargaining agreement that makes going into the offseason with Mayo as a restricted free agent more palatable.

I trust as much as any journalist and fan when it comes to the player/team salaries it publishes. But Mayo's qualifying offer won't be the $7.3 million that HoopsHype reports. The league's new CBA now calculates qualifying offers for lottery picks in a different way.

It is more likely that Mayo's qualifying offer will compute to be less than what he earns this season ($5.6 million) based on how many games he's started and the minutes he's played in the third and fourth years of his career, according to a source familiar with the process.

So the Griz simply won't trade Mayo because they're nervous about the offseason. The organization is not preoccupied with the future in terms of creating cap room or setting up future payroll.

"The future is now," a Griz insider said. "That sums us up more than anything. We're taking this thing year by year. We'll let the future take care of itself. We definitely don't want to sell this season short."

At the end of the day, the Griz benefit from a highly motivated Mayo this season and still maintain control over his future with their right to match offers in restricted free agency. If Mayo leaves this summer, it's more likely he'll do so in a sign-and-trade that gives the Griz something in return. If Mayo decides to play in Memphis for the qualifying offer, it won't break the piggy bank to keep him.

For his part, Mayo doesn't seem at all distracted any more nor is he concerned about whether a contract extension gets worked out by Wednesday's deadline.

"I'll leave that up to Rob Pelinka and Chris Wallace," Mayo said, referring to his new agent and the Grizzlies' general manager. "My job is to play basketball. That's what I wake up to do every day. At the end of the day, it's the business. A player as great as Rudy went through this. And you're like 'What the... Are you serious?' It's what happens. It's the business."
nobody will read that though....just add more pointless comments

Yes... The Pau-Gate scandal has spoiled them.... Any willing trade that involves Kwame Brown is a scam... And of all teams, why would Jerry West send Pau to the Lakers and hand them the missing piece for the triangle?

1. Jerry West wasnt with the Grizzlies when that trade went down

2. At the time the Grizz were rebuilding and wanted Kwame Browns expiring contract

3. The Grizzlies got back Darrel Arthur, Marc Gasol and the cap space to add Zach Randolph in that trade
